I think the pertinent question of whether AI is capable of receiving several batches of new, hi-tech aircraft at a time should be asked, if not investigated. _________________ Yeah. |

Why has it been parked in a hangar? Could it be that actually some serious maintenance issue is being fixed on it?
And I don't understand why a new aircraft needs to be cannibalized for spares. Does not the cost of the aircraft include some free spares support? _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Given it's off the radar since April 2014, it's pucca there's no "serious maintenance issue" with the a/c - as that would be fixed much faster than the 6 months here. Plus if it's a MX issue - why would both engines and the radome be missing (these are the only things visible externally, it's quite possible there's lots of other equipment missing inside). _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

Check the hawkers on the AI Road near Kalina.
They're probably selling engine parts along with First Class cutlery, crockery, IFE screens, etc. |

AI has issued a clarification saying that it is 'infact going through a maintenance upgrade and that the bird should be back in Air by November'. _________________ |

^^ BS Alert IMO.
6 months of a key asset sitting idle for routine MX? Nah!
One of the comments on Devesh's blog is a more likely conspiracy theory - that this being the first born from CHS, it's in pretty bad shape internally and Boeing is now working with AI to upgrade the a/c to the normal 787 specs. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

I am glad that Nimish and others on this forum are bringing to light the issues with Air India. Hopefully this bird will fly in November and we will soon forget the growing pains of the AI 787's. I think the airline is right in choosing this aircraft however. The fuel efficiency of the plane is compensating for the inefficiencies of the airline management.
I keep saying this again and again. AI with its present bloated structure cannot put up a good fight against the likes of Indigo, Jet Airways, Air Asia India etc. It is better for Vistara Airlines to gobble them up. When that happens Tatas should be forced to exit Air Asia India venture. The fringe players like Spice and Go Air should combine too. We simply do not have the market for this many airlines.
The government should stop taxing MRO facilities at exorbitantly high rates. That would make the GMR's MRO in Hyderabad a reality soon. The taxes should be brought down in phases. The future of air travel growth is mainly in China and India. We should realize that and do everything in our power to capitalize on that. Government should shift its attention to only infrastructure ( safety in particular ) and get out of the airline business. |

Then why don't boeing or AI say something. This just makes AI look like a JOKE and doesn't make boeing look that good either. AI's PR department SUCKS and Boeing India's PR department isn't far behind |

Why do Boeing or Air India have to say anything? They are not obligated to report on their maintenance activities, are they? Would you like a report every time an aircraft is taken out of service for maintenance? The pictures in the blog weren't even taken in some public area, they were inside a hangar/work area and leaked to the public.
Recall the work on the Ethiopian 787 at Heathrow. Neither Boeing nor Ethiopian said a word about what was going on. We just saw from afar that the plane was being worked on since it was out in the open. |

Sammy - not really an apples to apples comparison - as in the ET 787, we knew exactly what was wrong, and work was constantly going on to fix it. Similarly with the 77W that got hit by a catering truck at EWR - that was clear. In this case it's clear as mud. Neither is there any reported MX issue (like a fire or getting hit), or is the time (over 6 months now?) in any way "normal" for routine MX work. _________________ We miss you Nalini! |

My point was more about the communications aspect. Neither Boeing nor Ethiopian publicly discussed anything about the repair. Yes, we knew what was going on but only because it happened in public view. Maybe the AI 787 has internal issues that are being worked on and aren't as obvious as an externally damaged aircraft.
Ultimately, I don't think either Air India or Boeing have to tell us what is going on. Everything else is just speculation. |
