Iran Air has retired the last active commercial Boeing 747SP in the world. EP-IAA, formerly called "Kurdistan", later renamed "Persian Gulf", flew IKA-BOM-IKA for her last service on June 10th 2014.
By all accounts, this ends scheduled commercial civil operations of the SP. BOM was lucky to catch her last flight.

That is sad, particularly when Boeing/USA recently announced that they will service and provide parts for Iran's old planes.

I guess the SPs have reached the end of their useful life, and it is simply too expensive to repair them now.

Saw the Iran Air 747 SP take off from BOM a couple of hours ago. Are they back on regular duty on IKA-BOM-IKA or was that a one-off?

Out of curiosity, how much traffic exists between BOM and Iran to warrant a perennial 747's load of pax? Unlike say, PIA sending 743s into India until recently, IR aren't the only means to get into Iran either.

Connecting traffic too is obviously minimal.

There's a lot of student traffic - young Iranians studying in India. There might be some medical traffic as well (I'm not sure about this). There's also some (limited) outbound religious traffic from India to Iran - which houses some important Shia religious places.

Is this enough to justify a 747 - I'm not sure...

So a lot has changed in 20 years (with DXB, AUH etc for shopping) but as a kid you did see quite a few Iranians coming in on that Iran air flight. You would also see them shopping in South Bombay. Being from LA its always easy to recognize Persian being spoken. Also they were pretty much the only ones (along with the few gulf arabs) where the women were fully covered up. Seemed like middle class persians came to bombay while richer (more westernized) ones went west (don't know this for a fact - just surmised given how unlike they are to the persians in LA). Lots of generalizations in my post so apologies if wrong.

From A.net :

The last airworthy Iran Air 747SP, EP-IAC, will be doing a special farewell charter flight for enthusiasts on Sunday November 23 from Tehran to Tehran (I suspect Mehrabad) with a low pass / missed approach at Isfahan and a few other surprises. Booking and price info hasn't been released yet - but once it is, you'll know about it on Facebook, here, the usual grapevine. I know from Tehran that this has been green-lit at the very top, it's definitely happening.

Iran Air retires the B747SP from service

Iran Air retired its last remaining operational B747SP, EP-IAC (msn 21093), from revenue service following a sightseeing farewell flight on Sunday, November 23. The 37-year old aircraft took off from Tehran Mehrabad for a one-hour long flight that covered the Alborz mountain range as well as the Caspian Sea before returning home.

Though the Iranian carrier was the last commercial operator of the type, the following private/governmental agencies continue their own respective B747SP operations: Saudi Arabian Royal Flight, Las Vegas Sands, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Bahrain Royal Flight, CC2B, Ernest Angley Ministries, NASA, Oman Royal Flight, and Qatar Airways Amiri Flight.
