Seems like a poor plan to me - but that might just be me. It's not a United Y+ type of offering which is offered almost complimentary to loyal customers. Its an entirely different cabin with it's own pricing (similar to BA/ QF etc.), own service offering (porcelain plates) etc.

This could on the one hand reduce the J sales, on the other hand it's not going to help get more customers on - as they already find LH too expensive in Y. TK's efforts with their Premium Economy (Comfort Class) had to be stopped, and the airline is now removing these seats.

What's not clear to me is where this space will come from - only from Y, or will LH sacrifice some J seats as well?

Of course LH has introduced this after extensive research I'm sure - and they seem confident that they have a winner on their hands. Good luck to them!

Comments/ Thoughts?

According to LH, they plan to change 600 euro more than economy for trans atlantic routes. If it is 600 more than the corresponding economy class (not full flare Y), then it is reasonable, especially if it is 600 more for a flight from India to USA, it is even better. But 600 more than full fare Y, then LH will struggle to fill it.

Looking at BA, I find the Y+ fares closer to J than to regular discount economy fares.

There's 2 possibilities - its EUR600 per way or for a round trip. Let's take both scenarios and see what that works out for an India-US round trip:

EUR 600 each way => EUR 2400 for the full trip => Approx INR 2L extra - over an approx 1L INR ticket. Bloody expensive, forget about it.

EUR 600 round tip => EUR 1200 for the full trip => Approx INR 1L extra - over an approx 1L INR ticket. Still bloody expensive, considering you can get a business class seat for INR 2.1L on TG/ QR (random dates in May - BLR-LAX). Or INR 2.6L on EK (one-stop routing).

On BLR-Europe - a business class seat can be had for INR 1.5L to INR 2L - which makes it cheaper to fly J than pay the Y+ charge on LH.
