It depends on company SOP,manufacturers recommended procedure, regulations from the governing authority, and also if the particular airport authority allows powerback from its stands.

Not really good idea with engines slung under the wing due to increased chances of FOD.In this case the engines are much higher.DC9s/MD80s doing powerbacks are quite a common sight at a lot of US airports.
I guess at certain airports where you have to depend on others for ground support it makes more sense to powerback when you can, than spend time and money for a tow truck.

At the other end of the spectrum we have the DC 8. Engine #2 & #3 [max rev] and #1 & #4 [Idle only] reverser were certified to be used inflight as a way of ...er...umm....descending fast. Wink

Powerback is normally used when Pushback facilitiesdont exist.
Depends on the Airline SOP.
Mainly done by Tail mounted Engined Aircraft, due FOD damage risk & tipping issues.
Remember to stop a powerback with Forward thrust & NOT the brakes.

On the IL62 the outboard (1&4) reversers could be deployed just before flare out .Not sure if they were certified for use to aid steep descents.

Just don't jump on the brakes after you're done, especially on an aft cg a/c Cool
