Hi!!
Happened to go to the airport, the new Domestic Terminal Building looks really great...
Planned to take alot of pics but tremendous number of security guards around, so could manage only two, that to with my cell phone...





This terminal was supposed to be inagurated in October 09', dates were later revised to March 10'... Work still isn't complete, will be open for operations, maybe by June this year...

Looks nice. However, by looking at the amount of work completed, I doubt it would open by June.

Just clarifying a few facts...

The Vietnam Airlines aircraft was indeed a surprise!
And, taking pictures was surprisingly not very risky! Infact there were AAI officials on that very spot when I reached the terminal, and I had a little chat with them, and thats where I got the facts from, they allowed me to roam the airport premises freely and one of the officials also allowed me to enter the almost complete terminal before he was objected by somebody saying that because construction was still going on so it was not entirely safe, he said that they'd themselves invite us (there were a bunch of kids along with one adult, who apparently decided to follow into the terminal) for a tour once this building is complete... Now I realise they were just trying to be soft, and not sounding all bossy, which I thought was a good gesture!
You can expect a few more pics in the next 10-15 days if possible even the interior! Very Happy

11th of June saw 3 international flights bound for BOM, getting diverted to AMD due to bad weather, these included a BA 77E, ET 757 and Air Mauritius A330/340 (??), the later two left as soon as things cleared up, however the BA bird was stuck in AMD as the crew had surpassed their duty hours, and was re-scheduled to depart AMD at 0100 hrs, on the 12th.
I headed to the airport to capture the beauty, and shot the following shots using my cell phone camera...







Sorry for the poor quality, lots of cops at AMD.. Evil or Very Mad

Is the Swiftair ATR a permanent sight there? They used to operate for Deccan 360 to BLR, but have not seen them around for some time.

I do not think that IAF would park their aircrafts there. Moreover IL76's are not based out of AMD as of now.

It's pretty much there whenever I've been to the airport.
A lot of the time we also find a DN 360 A310 parked, mostly VT-AIN at AMD. I've seen it parked almost every time I've been to the airport in the afternoons...

I visited the terminal today, hoping to get some good interior shots, considering I'd gotten pretty close to doing the same, I was actually really optimistic, but as it turned out, there were lots and lots of cops around the terminal area, when I approached the approach road to the terminal, at the entry itself I was asked by a cop to turnback and return, and very rudely at that...nothing said or done...
With whatever I could see, I tell you what, it looked magnificent, with interior work too almost 95% complete, this terminal didnt look an average clean/glass/steel/concrete structure like the current terminal...it was definately thought over from a passenger point of view, and is certainly based on a theme of sorts, when construction started, there were reports that this terminal has been inspired from Singapore T3, now I'd never compare Singapore to AMD but as they say, 'if you aim for the stars, you'll land up on the moon'! Smile
On my last visit, I met up with an AAI official who said that they themselves will invite people to show this terminal before it opens for commercial operations, although I dont see much weight in this, I think it's still worth a try, so whenever possible I'll approach the current terminal manager, with a proper ID and all the essentials and request for a possible visit! Smile

Swift Air ATR transits thru BOM.Noticed it pushback at 0150hrs last night.

Ahmedabad: Get ready for a smooth ride underground, from the domestic to international terminal at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Airport. A travelator is the latest addition to the airport getting ready to don a new avatar soon.
The new airport terminal at Sardar Vallabhai Patel (SVP) International Airport will formally be inaugurated on Sunday. The terminal has been constructed at a cost of Rs 300 crore. Initially, the new building was conceptualised as an international terminal but it will be used as domestic airport till it goes fully functional in a few months.
Director of SVP International Airport, Anuj Aggarwal said, “The new airport will be inaugurated on July 4. The final commissioning will take another month before it gets fully functional. It will have a capacity of 2,200 passengers per hour, including departure and arrival.”
A state-of-the-art underground travelator connecting the domestic and international terminals for passenger comfort is one of the highlights. “The travelator which is 500m in length is like an horizontal escalator which will facilitate easy movement of passengers,” said Aggarwal.
The terminal building is conceived with a distinctive roofline, making reference to the recognisable form of kites associated with an international annual festival held in the city. The kiteshaped cutouts form skylights, while surrounding surface area is a membrane of ceiling finish from below and roofing above.
The terminal will benefit from the abundance daylight through the skylights, sheer glass and louvre facades. To alleviate energy efficiency in city’s extreme climatic conditions, air-conditioning is concentrated only on first three to four meters of space where it closely affects the comfort of passengers.
After the existing domestic airport building is converted into international terminal, the existing international terminal will be used for Haj pilgrims and other purposes. According to AAI, Ahmedabad airport sees more than 20 per cent growth rate in domestic circuit and gets 75 per cent domestic traffic and 25 per cent international traffic.
The new facilities to be added include an inline X-ray baggage inspection system integrated with departure conveyor system, checkin counters with common use terminal equipment (CUTE) and glass aerobridges with visual docking system.


MAIN FEATURES
Public areas with polished granite and office areas with vitrified tiles.
Energy-efficient light fixtures and provision of occupancy sensors.
Environment friendly refrigerants with modern airconditioning management.
State-of-the-art race track inlined baggage conveyors and carousel-type arrival conveyors.
Passenger boarding bridges for easy and comfortable boarding and alighting of passengers.

There was a report which said that the current international terminal will be used for Hajj operations, I fail to see how.. Confused
The current domestic one will be closed for about 3 months and refurbished before it is opened as an international terminal.

I met an AAI official who told me that "the current domestic terminal will be closed refurbished, and converted into an international terminal in about 2-3 months... I will still assume atleast 3 months...
It'll be really interesting to see what they do, just add a bunch of immigration counters, or will they revamp the apron area as well, because, I am pretty sure of the fact that none of the contact gates (aerobridges) are equipped to handle widebodies, so what they can actually do is to reconstruct the aerobridge area around the first and the last have aerobridges at an angle so as to accomodate 2 widebodies at any given point of time and the two gates in the middle remain as small gates...another thing that can be does is this >> assume the 4 gates (which are in a straight line) to be Gates 1, 2, 3 & 4, from left to right, respectively... What they can do is make either Gate 2 or 3 non-functional, so automatically they get the space to make either Gate 1 or 4 a heavy gate respectively. It's easier said than done...but having said that it'll be a real disgrace if the international terminal has 4 aerobridges but the widebodies still have to be parked at remote gates...
The current domestic one will be opened on the 15th of August, so the new international terminal will be open by November, by then AI's AMD-FRA-EWR flight would be out of service, so the only widebody services we may see are 10W EK A332 and 2W SQ B772, until and unless AI extends EWR-BOM to AMD using the same aircraft or QR upgrades DOH-AMD to an A332, there will not be two widebodies at the same time in AMD...
The busiest time, by far will be between 4-6am where in there are 3 departures scheduled,
EK to DXB
QR to DOH
G9 to SHJ
later on we may even see GF and EY come into AMD...who too will have departures scheduled in the same timeperiod...
