No visa-on-arrival for Chennai residents
Corinne Wan
KUALA LUMPUR – In a move to stop the large number of Indian nationals residing in Chennai from overstaying in Malaysia, the Malaysian government has stopped issuing visa-on-arrival (VOA) to them.
The Cabinet Committee on Tourism decided last week that only Chennai residents now have to obtain visas from the Malaysian Consul-General's office.
Other Indian nationals will continue to enjoy the VOA. as an If they use Chennai as the exit point they will be granted VOA on arrival at the KL International Airport.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak explained that this was the best way to weed out potential abusers of the VOA from genuine tourists. About 25 percent of those arriving from Chennai have overstayed after their one-month visa expired and they are mostly residents of Chennai.
The committee also decided to issue VOA to expatriates living in Brunei to make it easier for them to enter Sarawak.
To encourage tourists from West Asia Malaysia will also extend the length of VOA for Iranians from 15 days to three months, and visitors from Iraq, the Palestinian Territories and Syria from 14 days to 30 days.

OK - so I guess this is applicable for those with Chennai as the address in their passports. Kind of strange, but I guess the statistical evidence is pretty strong. Though it's going to take only a few weeks before would be visa jumpers will have their addresses changed! |
