A new hangar for Iberia Maintenance took its final shape at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport on March 24 as its 1,100 tonne roof structure was jacked into position.

The 11,000-sq.-meter roof structure, which was assembled on the hangar floor over five months, took six hours to be lifted to its final in-situ height of 25 meters.

Jointly commissioned by Iberia Maintenance (75%) and the Barcelona Freeport Authority (25%), the €24 million building features an unusual oval floor plan that will eventually cover some 13,200 sq. meters--sufficient to accommodate two wide-body Airbus A340s, one A380 or four narrow-body A320s. This is the first oval-shaped hangar in the world, and it will be the first in Spain that can accommodate an A380, as well as the second in the country that can house an A340.

This extra wide-body aircraft hangar capacity will increase El Prat airport’s capability to receiving and dispatching long-haul flights. It also opens up the possibility of Iberia providing maintenance services to the nearly 80 airlines that fly into and out of the Barcelona airport.

Interior facilities include eight mobile junction boxes that rise from the floor with connections for water, compressed air, electric power, data lines and telephone lines. Elevating platforms will allow technicians to work at any height throughout the building. A programmable control panel will open and close the hangar’s 12 doors, and radiant floor heating should optimize indoor temperatures.

The hangar also features several environmentally friendly features, including lots of natural light, extensive use of renewable energy and on-site water recycling.

The hangar officially will open in October with maintenance activity beginning a month later. Iberia plans to provide aircraft inspections, repairs and maintenance, including C-check type work.

Wow!!
