India set to sign deal for 40 Sukhoi jets by March

BANGALORE (Reuters) - India is set to sign a contract to buy 40 more Sukhoi Su-30 fighters from Russia by the end of March, the country's air force chief said on Thursday.

Air Chief Marshal S.P Tyagi said he expected the planes, costing slightly less $40 million each, to be delivered within three years.

"We think that in this financial year, we will sign the contract," Tyagi told reporters in Bangalore at the Aero India 2007 industry show, where companies such as Boeing Co. and Russia's MiG are displaying their aircraft.

The air force already has an unspecified number of Su-30s in its fleet.

Separately, the government is expected to soon invite bids for 126 combat aircraft to replace the air force's ageing MiG 21s, MiG-23s and MiG-27s.

Rosoboronexport, Russia's state weapons seller, said on Thursday it would aggressively pitch the MiG-35 combat jet in the Indian tender.

"It is unprecedented because all the best fighters in the world will be queuing up to win this tender," said Victor Komardin, deputy director general of Rosoboronexport. "We will try to do everything we can to be successful in this tender."

Regards,

The nude deal with US is still far away, and so are the rewards. Moreover, the rewards there are in terms of contract for reactors.

More Su-30MKIs for the mean time is good.

the MKI version is the most advanced russian built aircraft beside Su-35.

Plane can whip the typhoon, F - 15, 16, 18 and MiG - 29.

I doubt the 126 planes will be american as last year I was spoke to a MiG -21 pilot in Srinagar. He said himself and others don't want american planes.

Welcome Minister.Any reason for that username Smile

Most Avoid US Equipment because of the Impression that US places sanctions when Countries don't tag along. So not Surprising if IAF goes with trusted Allies.Unless the US gives some special assurances. Smile

That's what I heard, some people are skeptical about the reliability of acquiring spares from America. However, the recent warming of the 2 countries relationships is not short term- it’s a strategic shift.
Besides, not like our Russian friends have been very helpful in supplies spares either Razz

Hmmmmm not too sure about that. In terms of maneuverability maybe, but the overall weapons package? The F-18E vs. a Su30mki, well.... I sure wouldn’t put my money on either of them I wouldnt by any stretch say the Sukhoi could whip the F18.

Mig-21 pilots complaining about American planes …….. somethings wrong with that picture Very Happy

Its high time our people get rid of the older ones and get something more advanced. Is there any possibility that the surya kirans will change to hawks?

IAF will not be in a position spare the Hawks for the aerobatic team. Maybe the IJT could be used for that purpose.
