Indian Railways set for anti-collision device
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kishalay Bhattacharjee
Friday, March 9, 2007 (Guwahati):
Launching of the anti-collision device may be the end of rail accidents in one of the most populated railway network of the world.
One of the worst ever train accidents in the world took place at Ghaisal in West Bengal on August 2, 1999.
About 289 people died and more than 300 were injured as the Delhi-bound Brahmaputra Mail collided head-on with the Awadh-Assam Express that was headed for Guwahati.
Fifteen bogies were smashed. The Konkan Railway Corporation was then asked to develop an anti-collision mechanism that could help prevent such disasters.
Disaster prevention
After lots of thought and two years of testing, an anti-collision device or ACD was prepared and all trains running under the Northeast Frontier Railway have been fitted with the device. Trials will begin on Friday.
"All the experimentations and trials are complete, final commissioning trials will be taken up from the 9th of March, and we hope to complete them before the end of March. Once it is proven successful here then it will be extended on the rest of the country," said A K Sanwalka, General Manager, Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway.
Trademarked as Raksha Kavach, the ACD is a complex network of self-acting communication devices based on microprocessors that automatically apply brakes to trains to avoid collision head on, rear-end or sidewise.
Derailment detection
Not just collisions, the Loco ACD can detect a train that may have halted on the adjacent track due to derailment or any other reason.
It also regulates speed while approaching a level crossing and can detect whether the gate is open or closed thereby reducing accidents.
And in case there's a system collapse, all trains within a 3-km radius will come to a halt.
"It will cost us about Rs 250 crores. It is the first of its kind in the world infact. In the true sense it will get proven here, in the NF railway. We are fitting all the contiguous railways and we are lagging other zones where normally 110 kmph is permitted," said A K Sanwalka, General Manager, Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway.
If successful, the state-of-the-art system could go a long way in reducing accidents, ensuring greater security for over 11 million people who bank on the Indian Railways on a day-to-day basis

This ACD system is in use on KR trains for quite some time. There is nothing much new in it. _________________ MRVC Mania. My blog dedicated to the new violet-white suburban rakes of Mumbai. |

These nasty Accidents were not head on collisions. They were due to landslides. _________________ MRVC Mania. My blog dedicated to the new violet-white suburban rakes of Mumbai. |
