Now, BMI bans Bible for Saudi flights
London, Dec 19 (UNI):
A British airline has banned its crew from taking the Bible into Saudi Arabia for fear of upsetting Muslims.
BMI bosses have told staff to take the Koran instead, and this without any intimation to this effect from Riyadh.
As expected, things have not gone down too well with the staff. One middle-aged stewardess is planning to sue BMI for religious discrimination at an industrial tribunal due to take place in the
In the meantime, BMI has decided to exclude her from flights to Saudi Arabia.
A BMI source said: ‘‘Foreign Office advice is that non-Islamic religious material is not permitted in Saudi’’.
But another BMI worker said: ‘‘We understand our embassy has confirmed that the Saudis never enforce this rule’’.
‘‘The stewardess is deeply religious and takes her Bible everywhere she travels. The bottom line is BMI don’t want to jeopardise the Saudi route, which is worth millions to them,’’ The Sun quoted the worker as saying.
Interestingly, the ban follows British Airways’s climbdown on a rule prohibiting staff wearing crosses - which triggered mass protest. |

Dude its not BMI or their PR, its the Saudi govt. The most intolerant regime in the world IMHO. You cant take pics of your Gods or whatever, you cant worship, women have to wear burkhas, girls above a certain age cant walk in public without their husbands.
Total BS.

Saudi govt. forces it's guidelines on all carriers including AI. When my dad used to fly to Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam, he always removed the relgious pictures, he normally kept in his brief case. |

I am aware about the pictures and worshipping part...
But what about the case here that bmi bans bible and asks people to carry quaran instead???
Are they trying to get some favour from Saudi govt by making them happy with such nonsense? _________________ http://www.myspace.com/avsatsworld

Next they'll rename it Saudia Airlines
I've heard of not carrying Religious symbols in their country, but this is weird.
Rather knock off the sector.
When the US troops celebrated Christmas in Saudi with some troops in shorts during Operation Desert Shield why no one objected.

Whats the point in asking "rather" to carry a quaran???
You can ban them from carrying the bible but not tell them to do something that they might have never done.
Clearly i feel bmi's expecting some favour from the Saudi govt. Maybe change the name as Hawk suggested to something British Saudi Midland Airways _________________ http://www.myspace.com/avsatsworld

I am sure while not carrying the Bible is compulsory, carrying the Quran is voluntary and BMI is probably doing that part as a PR.
OT and I dont mean to offend anyone but has any of you ever read a religious book that is not of your religion?

Yes 380 being forced to read is not right. If I were BMI staff I would not be happy to hear that.

More on this:
http://www.indcatholicnews.com/stewarde327.html
LONDON - 20 December 2006
Stewardess to challenge airline's Bible ban
Claire Bergen
An air stewardess is to challenge a ruling by an airline preventing staff from trvelling to Saugi Araia with a Bible.
Bmi, formerly British Midland Airways, confirmed that the matter is now subject to an industrial tribunal due to take place in the new year.
The stewardess, a committed Christian, likes to take her Bible, which was once her mother's, with her when she travels.
But Bmi says it has banned her from taking the Bible with her in accordance with Foreign Office advice that no non-Islamic materials or artefacts are allowed in Saudi Arabia.
On its website the Foreign Office says of Saudi Arabia: "The importation and use of narcotics, alcohol, pork products and religious books, apart from the Qu'ran (Koran), and artefacts are forbidden."

I cant understand how a country so fanatic can expect the World to treat them fairly. I would never go into such a country, where my beliefs are not respected.
I understand its a major pilgrimage for Islam but that doesnt mean they have to be so ignorant of others beliefs. _________________ Geniuses are always misunderstood in their lifetimes. |

Do they care what you have to think? Even though Saudi supports USA (the present rulers), they hate other religions. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/avsatsworld

No they dont. Now the world tolerates them because they have oil. What about when the oil gets over. They will have to do a Dubai to survive, which I dont think they will be able to do and anyway the region cant support two imposters.

Don't you know the basic reason why Osama Bin Laden called them enemies of Allah or Islam? Because they supported USA in the Operation Desert Storm _________________ http://www.myspace.com/avsatsworld
