Puri temple in 'cleansing act' after American's entry

BHUBANESWAR/PURI: After more than 18 hours of debate, the food cooked for around 7,000 devotees at Puri's Jagannath Temple was thrown away on Friday.

A section of priests had insisted that the bhog be discarded since it was "defiled" by an American's entry into the shrine on Thursday. The mahaprasad that went waste is estimated to be worth about Rs three lakh.

The throwing away of such a huge quantity of food coincided with police confirming that the US national, Paul Roediger, had managed to gain entry through a temple servitor.

On Thursday, priests suddenly noticed a white man near the sanctum sanctorum — infamous for barring entry to Thai princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in 2005.

"After going through the close-circuit television camera footage installed at the Lion's Gate and other places inside the temple, we found that Roediger and his two Hindu friends (V K Shukla and A Saxena) were accompanied by a temple priest, identified as Ramachandra Panda," said A C Pahi, a police officer. During questioning, Paul said a priest had helped them enter the temple, Pahi added.

Temple chief administrator Suresh Mohapatra said, "We are yet to decide on the action to be taken against the priest. No action, however, can be initiated against the foreigner and his Indian friends."

According to him, it is difficult to screen all visitors due to lack of a systematic mechanism like formation of queues for entering the temple.

"People enter in groups and there is always the possibility of someone sneaking in," he said. Police detained Roediger (59) for five hours for allegedly violating the age-old temple tradition, which debars non-Hindus, especially those who consume "objectionable food", from entering the shrine.

Puri SP Sanjeeb Panda said a station diary entry has been made in this regard but no case has been registered because no one has filed an FIR nor is there any law under which he can be charged.

"Since there is no law to punish Roediger, the temple administration asked him to pay Rs 209 for mahasnana (purification ritual)," the SP said.

"We will interrogate the priest, who helped the trio enter the temple," he added. The priest accused of helping the American enter the temple could not be contacted.

OMG this sounds like a story straight out of Saudi Arabia. I thought we were living in a democracy. Shameful indeed.

Cheers

Nothing new people...happens more than 10 times a year. Once some dalits entered the temple and the temple had to be closed for 4 hours. But the head priest was knowing us quite well so he allowed us inside . Similarly all those who had contacts with some priests were allowed inside.
Yeah! I found the head priest himself making fun of these rituals. Even he didnt like such things. But he calls it their 'law'

What is even more disturbing is the fact that there is no active condemnation by the media. Such incidents should not be allowed to become acceptable.

There was a video clip on CNN IBNs website on this.
Religious beliefs are great, but why the intolerance?
Dalits, non-hindus, women, whatever. This intolerant form of religion belongs 800 years in the past, let's change with the times. You hear people say over and over again "this is how it's been for 2000 years bla bla" and that comment can't be used for everything!
The priests can hide behind their 'law' as much as they want, that excuse still disgusts me.
Is there 1 religion out there which really practices tolerance, not only preach it?
