AI sells a pilot dream to youth

NEW DELHI: The acute shortage of pilots in India could turn out to be a boon for young science and engineering graduates who dream of flying high. Air India has decided to select 150 such students every year after an aptitude test and send them for pilot training to Europe and Australia.

Air India has tied up with banks so that these students get loans of Rs 15-18 lakh required for the training, which the airline would refund if they work for five to six years with the national carrier.

First-class science graduates from physics, chemistry and maths (not biology) streams and engineers are being eyed under this policy. ‘‘For the first batch of 150 students, we have shortlisted 400 graduates. Pilot aptitude, medical and psychometric tests would be conducted to make final selections. They would be sent to three flying schools in Europe and Australia,’’ AI CMD V Thulasidas told TOI. As the tie-ups increase, more students could be inducted for this course every year, he said.

No American flying school was chosen as a partner as post-9/11 regulations make it extremely difficult to get security clearance for pilot training in that country.

At present, many banks don’t give loans for commercial pilot licence (CPL) training courses. AI will give a guarantee to banks that candidates would repay loans from their salaries on joining the carrier. ‘‘The loan would be given to trainee pilots and they would have to repay it as per schedule. If they stay with the airline for five to six years, that amount could be reimbursed to them,’’ Thulasidas said.

this is what i dont understand... Air India is really one of the only airlines in the world i think... where it requires you to graduate in Science but ONLY in MATH/PHYSICS/CHEM and not BIO to be a pilot... i mean what the F***??

what stupid sense is this?... just by graduating in the biological sciences you DONT qualify to train as a pilot?? stupid shit literally...

the best airlines in the world dont give a shit in their country for what you graduate in as long as you prove you have the required intelligence and aptitude in the tests specific for entry...

another one of our famous policies i bet... Mad

Forget pilots D-ABTH none of the companies give a shit what you graduate in. Like you said they are more interested in what you can do as opposed to what you have done. Typically ratty reaction by AI.

BTW Saurabh good decision you r doing it on ur own...coz u can choose ur company and not be tied down to babudom.

Cheers

the only thing i like about the whole program is that it provides you with a job with an established carrier right off the bat.

at least you don't have to instruct or do other odd jobs to build up time.

honestly... i felt really cheated... in the airline industry except for very specific technical roles where you require a formal education to qualify like technicians and engineers... they really dont give a shit about what you do to be a pilot...

i wonder if karatecat can get an explanation from his source in AI regarding this absurd qualification criteria...

I think it's a DGCA requirment that a pilot should have passed 12th with Physics and Maths. I know some guys who had to reappear in 12th with Physics and Maths. I don't understand why AI is now asking graduates in Science. They have a lot of pilots who are BA or B Com graduates with PCM in 12th.

Dabth,
It is mainly to revive an old file gathering dust in South Block. An excerpt is:
"The Science and Technology policy, announced by the Government of India in 2003, emphasises the need to promote basic research and give importance to recruit qualified manpower and retaining them in order to face the challenges of global competition."
It's a result of this, believe it or not. A few on the Air India Board raised the point you have, but it was quickly squashed after pressure from the Ministry of S&T and Education, which painted a dismal picture of hordes of unemployed science and engg grads being churned out in India each year.
Thulasi then went ahead and announced it. It was modified to include engineering grads ... as the IAF is also looking at pilots from engineers. You may remember that AI has an unofficial agreement with the IAF from now on to loan pilots to it.
This may sound unbelievable, but this is a GoI Airline you see.

Even i agree on that...but frankly speaking choosing between a private airline and an airline like AI or IC ... its the best if you choose the govt airline. Not only payment is more in most of the cases but also you're quite relaxed and don't have that much of job tension as in provate carriers. not referring to the technical part that you don't fly, sit home and expect AI to pay you but private airlines biggest fear is that if they close down and other airlines are not in a position to absorb you.
Personally i feel this is a very good step by AI

This is a great opportunity for those who want to be pilots but cannot afford to do so on their resources.

thats why i say its not fair to discriminate in this manner... if i were a pilot trained privately with a CPL after graduating from the biological sciences... would they still be so choosy?? i think not... considering the state they are in... or for that matter any airline today... will practically pick you straight up if u just have ur CPL

DABTH, this article is just for you!!!!

Quote:
Sample this. SpiceJet has a former truck driver from Canada flying one of its planes. Another one is a former chartered accountant.

Jet Airways recently recruited a ground staff engineer who took pilot training and is a full time pilot on its rolls now. Air India, on the other hand, has a flight purser who now doesn’t serve food but is inside the cockpit flying the aircraft.

Similarly the common man’s airline Air Deccan has BPO executives flying its aircraft. It also had an ex merchant navy professional as its pilot who later joined some other airline.

At Air India we have quite a mix of pilots ranging between 22 year old to 55 year old”. Air India has around 600 pilots.

their thought process in this issue just does not make any sense to me..

take for example..i am selected to train for Flight Operations for Lufthansa and will be qualified and certified on all their longhaul widebodies i.e. B747-400,A340-200,A340-300,A340-600!!

does it matter that i have a "biological science" as a graduation degree??... hell no....

what matters is i have demonstrated enough hard work, perseverance, dedication and enthusiasm to get to where i wanted to be (apart from being a pilot) .. and that was Aircraft Operations... and by the end of April .. i will be completely checked out..

so why does AI have to be so lame with their entry conditions is beyond me...

the way i figure is every airline accepts your application... but the selection is only on the basis of the candidate clearing the aptitude tests and selection procedure..

IMO airlines should preference to pilots who have a business background, being a science graduate doesn't really help you in the business aspect of running an airline.

BTW it really disgusts me when people change their professions to become pilots because they like the money. If you don't have a passion for flying you shouldn't be in the cockpit in the first place.
