Airliners.net is a great site but like somebody else said previously, this site should have it's own identity.

Website development is relatively cheap and hosting fees could be absorbed by those who would like to donate.

Just out of curiousity, what is wrong with our flickr pool?
I thought that was a great idea, anybody can upload and we don't have to wait ages for the pics. to be edited and approved.

Interesting thought - I just browsed through our hosting provider today, and realized that for $10 we can get a full backup of our "site" - which can then potentially be moved to another place with phpBB as the engine.

Getting funds per-se is not a problem at all - I'm sure we can raise the $100 or $500 necessary to get a multi-year hosting deal. Development and maintenance will be the real challenge.

interesting...will the new provider have the ability to retrieve the posts from back up. If so then we do need to have options open. As for development and maintence, we better have it managed. No harm in exploring options though. Let us know what you found.

Would it be possible to have a "Tests" section where people can see how their photos and TRs turn out before posting them in their respective section?

Also, does this provider allow for live chat? I think that would be a great idea if possible.

Test is already there - via the "Preview" button for each post. I use that very frequently.

No live chat - but we can all share our IM buddy names, and then chat over MSN or Googletalk or something else.

Aseem, I believe he is asking for what's called "Custom Titles". This is a user defined field and not based on the number of posts.

Another suggestion, is there any way you can make it so that topics that one has participated in have a slightly different icon? Like a check or some sort of mark in it? Here is an example:

Top icon is a thread I participated in, the one below is one that I did not.

don't have provision for either of the two requests. For the latter you might want to search for topics by your username, cumbersome but might just work.

sometime wonder why no big names in Internet industry jumped into forum business.

Why? What is wrong with open source?
It sucks for us because we're running this site through bizhat instead of being a stand alone site, otherwise we could tinker around with the settings as we'd like.

We've been upgrading gradually with improvements, within our capacity as this is a free run site.
Aseem had started out with a yahoo group & we are now here.
Any ideas of improvement retaining the posts with reliability can def be considered.

I'm sure Aseem can consider it if practical.

IMO the site is perfect.
We have Flickr to help us upload pics, although many members prefer anet and jp.net before a-i.net but personal views.
We have a excellent discussion board that allows us to post whenever and wherever we want to, not like anet where you put in money to use ur right to speech Very Happy

Lets keep it going this way, let the battles and wars here continue Wink

The fact us that we are basicallyusing a forum interface developed by a third party which cannot be changed vat our will until and unless we have professional web developers at hand who can cater to the suggestions by fellow members. The interface or template is Cobalt developed by Jakob Persson and hosted by phBB. Nowhere, the actual registrar of this forum has the key to edit the interface.
Moreover, getting into financials without a proper management can lead to problems as all web portals which provide for online transactions through mediums like paypal have a separate management dedicated for this aspect. One thing which can be done in order to gain monetary benefits without getting into hassles of members paying is through paid advertising. I remember a friend of my'n who during our school days in 10th standard started a forum dedicated to Man Utd. He incurred all expenses like registering the domain, server charges etc. and the portal also put up advertisements through linkup programmes. I remember he getting a cheque for the advertisements in his mom's name as her name was used in all formalities coz my friend was a minor.
Well, if we go by how Anet actually works is that they have a comprehensive interface, having all services in one portal unlike ours, where we are a dediicated forum having photo uploading and other services but those are actually 3rd party links. For this, funds are needed to develop and host everything in a single portal, something not impossible but difficult, as it involves professional management for handling day to day affairs, web developers, to handle financials etc.

Thanks TSK - excellent summary. This is the main reason we're not going for our own funded/hosted forum. The money part is easy, and any of us can put that up, but the professional management is what's needed. And when someone puts up money, he's looking for returns, and when some one offers professional management, they'll look to be compensated as well.

I disagree. I don't think you need professional management if you are collecting money (whether donations or a fee) from members. Perhaps you need it when you become the size of A.net but I don't think this site is going to see that anytime soon.

I belong to some ice hockey related boards and they collect donations and don't have professional management. They are simply a message board. One of them even kept a public account of how much was donated and how much was spent on monthly expenses.

I suppose that if you want a portal like A.net it may take some more effort but I don't think you'll need a web developer or any sort of management. I think you guys are making it out to be more than it is. Some of the better message board software out there come with add-ons that can easily be integrated for different features and anyone with a computer background could likely figure it out. I know those that have no computer background have done it.

I really think you guys should at least consider better message board software and better hosting, at least see what the costs would be. I'm more than willing to help both in time or monetarily. Smile

sammyk, my views are in the light of the fact that what all is needed to pep p the forum in terms of A.net. I mentioned the fact that majority of members were looking forward to develop this forum on the lines of A.net and my views are also on the same lines.
Well, your example of the hockey forum seems feasible in the present scenario but one not only needs basic knowledge for adding new features, using advanced templates. This would lead to monotony in the features, apperances etc. of the forums. A person with advanced skills would surely be able to make the forum stand out amongst others, who because of their limited resources will not be able to change the working of their forums.

Dude, you can upload a bigger but acceptable avatar to imgaeshack.us and then right clik on the image- 'copy image location'. And paste it in A-I.net's profle page: 'Link to off-site Avatar'.

First of all, I would like to thank Cougar for thinking of me when new mods come up.

I would love to moderate. Many of you would be surprised by my sense of fairness.

Notwithstanding that, however, I think overall the website is just fine, and I commend Aseem for putting this together, and all the mods for moderating.

The only thing I would add is that all of you should stop ganging up on Cougar, provoking him, and even if you disagree with his points or even his strong language, refrain from banning him or disciplining him. We need his strong comments.

How boring is sweet talk anyway??!! Wink

I have not seen any instances lately where we have provoked Cougar. I really feel like many other member, he contributes to the content of the forum with his suggestions, ideas , thoughts.

And it is probably you like his strong comments just because it is against AI. It would be interesting to see if you would like his "harsh" comments in the area of your interest. Laughing

Are you suggesting we should consider something similar to the "icon player" status for Cougar - he's saddled with this team whether we want him or not Wink.

The display picture - SQ A380 is a beautiful capture in my opinion and I give all credit to its photographer. It has also been on the display for a while now, I was wondering if its time yet to change it to a newer one. No offence to anyone, but wouldn't an India specific or General Aviation picture be a better option?

Just my two cents...

Is it possible to make it easier in this forum, to upload pics like how it is in orkut? There the uploading pics are done by browsing and selecting the pics u want to display...

At the moment it is difficult for me to display pic directly? Can't that be done?

Sites like orkut have their own 'dedicated' storage servers. And doin something like tht on a forum would require extensive coding ( + storage servers) here. This is not possible without dedicated Html coders/sw engineers.

Using 3rd party storage is THE best method currently, which also saves a lot of bandwidth allocated to ai.net.

@ mods: I remember a request by mods, to NOT quote a post containing lots of images. Was tht done to reduce unnecessary image quoting or to save bandwidth?
