Air Canada has just announced that from April 30, 2007 it will cease all flights to India.

However the Indo=Canada trade association has said that it will try and get the airline to reverse its decision.

I'll certainly miss them, since there goes any chance of a cheap flight redemption to the US. AC redemption was awesome, as they charge 75K miles for India-USA/Canada (on their own metal) vs. 130K on *A carriers. And I earn 20-21K miles for each trip to the US, so the conversion ratio was almost 1 return trip free for every 3 return trips to the US!

I'd just ticketed 2 seats for August, and luckily they've been changed over to LH at no charge.

Having a stop at ZRH was actually kool because the flight used to provide direct connection to the most happening city in the swiss country. Well maybe they cud have routed the flight via ATQ .

I hope Aseem's reaction to this matters the most and also the other Canadian members or members who frequently travel to Canada.
We all know India is a highly lucrative market for Air Canada, thanks to the NRI Punjabis, I see no point in discontinuing.
First Air Canada routed services to YYZ via Zurich and now a total stop. It's not digesting at all. Why such a lucrative route be discontinued.
Moreover, to cater to the large Punjabi population AC has Punjabi/ Hindi speaking crew...

I couldn't care less, it is AC's loss. Moreover their fare was way too high to attract price concious indian passenger. I don't know why, but they could have managed to keep the prices low as they were having whole aircraft to themselves. I am sure AI's entry in to the market with sensible route had something to do with it.
As low/inconsistent load round the year has been the reason cited, I doubt they'll start the route once their 772LR/777W start coming.

for that UAE-Canada bilateral will have to liberalized. Imagine EK does does not fly to YYZ, although EY does.

Is AI's DEL-ATQ-BHX-YYZ doing brisk business?

Strangely, AC's decision to discontinue DEL service conincides with 9W's to start. Is 9W taking advantage of slots/bilaterals now left unutilized by AC?

The new India Canada bilateral allows airlines to operate a maximum of 14 flights a week to and from any single point in either India or Canada.

Since AI operates only 6 flights a week currently there is a potential to operate 8 more flights per week to YYZ.

We have all been reading about AI's plan to enter *A.

Perhaps with AI/IC merger well on its way AI's *alliance annoucement will happen shortly.

Then we might see AC code share with AI on the YYZ-BHX-ATQ Laughing

No offenses against the NRI Punjabi,s living in Kaneeda Bt my personal experience has been that these ppl are more miser. I wud rather place my bets more on the Desi surds living in North India.

Canada hasnt been so popular in attracting business and investment as compared to US/Europe thats wat my preception is.

the traffic is primarily VFR with nt much business travel happening.

Offcourse AC has got full right to discontinue if they find the current competetion too tough or yeilds nt very attractive

Even to some extent I agree with you. The reason you can say majority of Punjabis migrate to work there, and I don't know but many of them are into Truck Driving.

Air Canada cancels India flight, angers diaspora

Montreal, Feb 17 (DPA) Air Canada's decision to kill the only direct flight to India in favour of expanding service to China has provoked anger in the Indo-Canadian business community.

The Canadian national airline confirmed Friday it would be discontinuing all direct flights between Toronto and New Delhi in early May - a cost-cutting move, the company said, brought on by declining sales for the route.

The airline currently flies the route every day, the only non-stop flight between Canada and India.

Are we expecting some good disputes among the business communities with AC?
