IAF to deploy radar for Taj Mahal security
Sunday, November 02, 2008, (New Delhi)
Taj Mahal will get a watchful eye right over its dome to keep a tab on possible aerial attacks to the 17th century monument of love.
IAF will deploy its newly-acquired Aerostat radar for strengthening the security cover over Taj Mahal in Agra from the third dimension to ward off any threat from aerial platforms similar to 9/11 WTC twin tower attacks.
"We are planning to deploy an Aerostat radar specifically for providing aerial security coverage to the Taj Mahal," a senior IAF officer told a news agency.
Aerostat radars are early warning and control phased-array radars mounted on balloons, tethered to the ground and designed to detect hostile approaching aircraft from afar, especially when they fly at low altitudes.
IAF plans to put one of these radars in its inventory over Agra, as it found that the present assets in place for Taj Mahal's aerial security were inadequate to tackle threat from low-flying aircraft.
Such straying civilian aircraft were used by terror mastermind Osama bin Laden's men to bring down the twin WTC towers in New York on September 11, 2001, an event which led to the US' 'War on Terror' campaign in Afghanistan.
The Lankan guerrilla group LTTE's newly-acquired air capabilities that have attacked the island nation's airbases have also made India wake up to aerial threats from non-state actors to its vital installations and infrastructure.

I feel there is nothing even close to Taj Mahal, when it comes to embarrasment a government faces upon its destruction. Kind of 9/11. _________________ [url=http://openflights.org/user/aseemsjohri]

Not to mention the major loss of revenue from tourist traffic if such a thing were to happen! For many Westerners, India is still about the golden triangle - Delhi-Agra-Jaipur.

It has got nothing to do with "a" hindu temple. I was just asking, there are so many other important monuments and temples around the country, why not deploy this aerostat radar to these as well. Thats it. _________________ HamiltonAir |

Important question indeed. Why not have a radar for Kedarnath,Rameshwaram, Tirupati?
No! that will not happen. Because the visitors are local people (mostly poor/ middle class) Who cares about internal security of these citizens anyway?
But Taj Mahal? Very much so!!
Because Taj Mahal is important for the Tourist promos (to backpack druggie Westerners)- we charge dollars for Goras there, no?
Or is it because of its so-called Mughal origin?
As I have mentioned before, protection of Citizens is more important than any one Monument. |

In all probability the Radar has been deployed because IAF has a huge transport base at Agra. I suspect this is a mirch-masala from the media about giving an aerial protection to the Taj.
Cheers

In the aftermath of the Mumbai assault, they'd do better to provide extensive radar/sat coverage for Mumbai, Delhi and other important cities.
Taj Mahal and its marble are WAY Down in the priority list, IMO.
ITs like saying, that post 9/11, protection of Mt Rushmore is more important than DC or NYC or LA. |
