Helicopter servicve to Nilackal

SABARIMALA: The Indian Air Force will operate helicopter service from Nilackal during the coming Sabarimala pilgrim season to meet any exigencies, including security and evacuation. As part of this, an IAF MI8 helicopter made a trial landing at Nilackal, near Sree Mahadeva temple at 11.30 a.m. on Friday.

The copter service is being launched under the initiative of Defence Minister A.K.Antony upon the requests of the State Government and MPs from the State.

The IAF helicopter flew from Thiruvananthapuram to Nilackal carrying a team led by Inspector General of Police (Southern Range) Arun Kumar Sinha, IG M.N.Krishnamurthy and IG Lok Nath Behra for inspection. The aircraft landed at the helipad, which was used by the State Farming Corporation for spraying insecticides in its rubber plantations, till 2003.

The helicopter made a vain bid to land at Saramkuthi near Sannidhanam after its successful landing at Nilackal.

The Travancore Devaswom Board’s Works Department would lay a helipad of 2,500 sq metres on the location where the copter landed.

Air-taxi service proposal referred to High Court: The proposal for an air-taxi service between Kochi and Nilackal was referred to the Kerala High Court by the Sabarimala High-power Committee. A meeting of the committee, held at Pampa on Friday, chaired by Additional Chief Secretary K.Jayakumar, decided to refer the proposal to the High Court, since it involves crucial aspects, including religious sentiments.
