AI’s facelift fails to go down well with designers
Quote: | But will it really be such a long-term change? Perhaps the oddest part of all in this livery change is that it comes in the shadow of the impending merger between Air India and Indian. Which livery will prevail in that case?Air India’s Mr Venkat admits that issue is unclear, until the Cabinet takes a final decision. “But we are sure that some way to merge the two identities will be found at that time,” he says. “For now we certainly see no change in this new design.” |
Air India faces criticism once again. |

Well the article does highlight a few important points. IMO we do want the palace in the skies of the 50s not Alia's impression of what modern AI should be. _________________ Geniuses are always misunderstood in their lifetimes. |

and
and regarding that c/s.. its quite good but the only thing missing is the cheatline on the windows... rest all looks fine...

xterra welcome to ai.net.
Well I believe even after the merger they will remain as separate brands and operate independently with some sort of mangerial merger.
Well as far as the livery is concerned, IMHO they should have made the entire tail red with the complete centaur and gotten rid of the writing from there. Also the red line just above the belly should not have been there instead been the lines as they existed in the old livery. I am happy though with the red belly and the engines and the cream colour.
Cheers _________________ Geniuses are always misunderstood in their lifetimes. |

I feel the windows should have been made bigger. I like the whole "merawala" cream, red and gold combination. _________________ My Flickr photos

The Palace of the Sky concept only started in 1971 with the arrival of the 747s. In the 1950s, there was very little ethnically Indian about AI's branding - the airhostesses wore dresses with blazers, most were chosen for their light skin (Parsees and Anglo-Indians formed the bulk of the crew), inflight cuisine was primarily continental, and the Centaur was the symbol of the airline. Only with the advent of the 707s in 1960, did AI adopt sarees as uniforms and Indian print wallpaper for the interiors.
And while I find the cropped centaur on the tail rather silly, as its too abstract in its cropped form for the average person to identify, the rest of the livery is elegant and quite nice.
At the end of the day, what the livery looks like doesn't make an iota of difference. Jet Airways has the MOST boring and derivative livery in the world, and its service standards and reputation in India are second to none. What matters is the interior of the aircraft, the professionalism of the airline, and the standards of service. |

While the overall color (new ) looks good, i think the RED on the engines is a bit of an overkill. Makes it a little tacky, IMO, and more pronounced on the big GE90-115s !!!
The red Centaur on the engines (current) was just fine, I thought. |

Well, as of now, to the best of my knolwedge:-
# Air India has the standard livery, it also has the Air India Express fantasies, then some of the Air India planes have white or silver bellies and now the new 777 have a new livery. In addition, leased aircraft often sport something different too.
# Indian Airlines has old-IC-orange, new-IC-bright-sun, CD as CD on some 737s, CD as Indian Airlines on some 737s, CD with Indian Airlines 50 years slogans on the ATRs.
So why worry about whether AI will look like IC or vice-versa, when such a wide choice is already available. Maybe all of them should look different, who cares? |
