Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport saw 13 percent more international cargo move in and out of the airport in 2006 than the previous year, helped by new service.

The cargo transports set an international cargo record for the airport.

The airport said 281,486 metric tons of international cargo came through the airport in 2006, up from 249,363 tons in 2005. A total of 756,598 metric tons of cargo passed through D/FW last year compared with 744,162 metric tons in 2005.

"D/FW has seen amazing international cargo growth over the past year and that has resulted in new jobs and development opportunities for the North Texas economy," said D/FW's CEO Jeff Fegan, in a statement. "The airport has established itself as the premier mid-continent destination for Asian cargo and is working hard to make inroads across European and South American markets. We see plenty of continued growth opportunities for the future."

During the year, airlines serving the airport added seven weekly flights to Asia, increasing its total weekly outbound cargo flight to Asia to 39. Cargo tonnage to Asia was 193,679 metric tons in 2006, a 21.1 percent increase from 2005's total tonnage to Asia of 159,871 metric tonnes.

China Cargo added two weekly flights, Air China Cargo began new service to Beijing with three weekly flights, and Cathay Pacific Cargo and Singapore Airlines Cargo each added an additional weekly flight.

In addition, Air France Cargo began new cargo service from D/FW to Paris in April 2006 with one weekly flight.

During the year, D/FW Airport also was named "Best Cargo Airport" by Air Cargo World and "Cargo Airport of the Year" by Air Cargo News in 2006.
