India to start bidding process of acquiring 126 fighter jets soon, defense minister says
India will soon invite bids from combat aircraft makers for the 126 fighter jets the country's air force plans to buy, Defense Minister A.K. Anthony said Wednesday.
The deal is estimated to be worth between US$6.5 billion and US$10 billion (5.4 billion and 8.3 billion).
"It is in the final stages," said Anthony, without giving a specific timeframe, speaking to reporters at an air show in the southern technology hub of Bangalore.
India also is considering buying nearly 200 army reconnaissance and observation helicopters, Anthony said.
Aviation companies from around the world have flocked to the air show, hoping for a piece of the billions of dollars in defense contracts the South Asian country plans to spend in modernizing its military.

The Mig-35 is the upgraded version of the Mig-29 otherwise also known as the Mig-29OVT (with the thrust vectors I suppose). Hmm were they specifically developed for india? and I dont think they are VSTOL aircrafts.
Anybody has more information on this?

The IAF should Balance the orders.Greater percentage of Mig35s & a few F16 & F18.Keeping all Interested & no sanction stopping spares risk.

Exactly! They should split the orders as you have mentioned, but I am afraid our people will go with the russian birds, OTOH, I would love to see some F-18s and F-16s in our airforce

Yes the MiG 35 has been specifically designed for India. I am not very sure that we will get to see an American Fighter in IAF's stables soon. Top IAF brass still prefers EADS Typhoon and Saab's grippen higher than F-18's. F-16 are a strict NO-NO. Why have they even bothered to enter the bid is beyond me. |

I never knew that the Mig-35 was specifically designed for India and I am not sure if the IAF brass prefers the eurofighter and gripens over the F-16 or F-18s. However, do you have any supporting article related to what you have said?

Bangalore air show: Indian combat aircraft order could be split between the MiG-35 and Western types
India could divide its order for 126 multirole combat aircraft (MRCA) into two, with Russia's MiG-35 a front-runner for the first batch of fighters if the plan goes ahead. But by splitting up the contract, India could have the first aircraft by 2012 if it awards the first order to a manufacturer that can meet an earlier deadline.
As Russia has indicated that the MiG-35 could be supplied within a shorter timeframe, it would be the likely front-runner for the first batch of aircraft.
The winner of the second contract would supply aircraft up until the 2020s. The Boeing F/A-18, Lockheed Martin F-16, Dassault Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon, and Saab Gripen are also in the fray, but sources say the US companies have an edge over the Europeans.
The air force could also increase the order to around 200 aircraft if there are further delays to the indigenous Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), say sources.
