Air Deccan may hive off ATR business, says Business Standard. DN has a fleet of 23 ATRs and 18 A320s.
It covers 60 airports, operates 300 flights a day, and is planning to spin off the ATR as a separate division.
The routes operated by ATRs are more profitable as these fly to airports where Air Deccan enjoys monopoly. With an independent company, the ATR division can come out with a separate balance sheet, Air Deccan sources have said.
The plan is that the ATR division take care of various regional operations, while Airbus can focus on low fare operations.
But complex human resources and management issues, inventory management and allocation of engineers and pilots are posing a problem in creating a regional business entity.
Air Deccan's ATR routes have turned profitable in three months against 12 months. |

The High lift to weight ratio & Fuel efficiency along with less T/O roll does make turboprops efficient.

I'm guessing this rumor may have to do with the rumors of a separate (liberal) policy for "regional only" airlines? |

DN continues to expand ATR operations into new areas where they can have a monopoly, but exit pretty quickly when the expected traffic doesn't appear (eg Delhi to Kanpur and Agra). They started off with two flights a day on DEL-JAI and now there are none. Their flights to Dehradun and Amritsar were more succesful and second flights were added.
More recent forays in the North include Pathankot and Kulu. I intend to fly to Kulu later this month. It is understood that Jagson had the monopoly here but the flights on Dorniers were often cancelled. |
