Russia's MiG-29K fighter makes maiden flight
MOSCOW, March 19 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has flight-tested a MiG-29K/KUB carrier fighter, a spokesperson for the MiG aircraft building corporation said on Wednesday.
She said the 42-minute flight was observed by a delegation of the Indian Navy, due to take delivery of the first MiG-29K/ KUB Russian fighter jets for the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier in May.
The contract, signed on January 20, 2004, stipulates the delivery of 12 single-seat MiG-29K and 4 two-seat MiG-29KUB by 2009, to be later deployed on the Admiral Gorshkov, currently being retrofitted in Russia for the Indian Navy. |

Great news.
How would the -K/KUB differ from the rest of the Mig 29 series. What added features are there.

Excellent news! So, what would happen to the sea harriers? will the IN still keep them or phase them out as the Migs come in?

HamittonAir, I do not think that the Sea Harriers would be phased out since they are a different class of aircraft altogether - the only planes to see successful VTOL service for a long time (though the erstwhile USSR had the Yakovlev Yak-38s - and the 141s? My memory does not serve me right - I think the 141s did not enter active service.)
The Sea Harriers are high subsonic aircraft, whereas the Mig-29 variants can easily cross the sound barrier, but are not VTOL craft - the carrier-based versions can be launched by catapult for takeoff, and can operate with short runways (necessitating arrestor hooks, and other devices).
Cheers, Sumantra. |

@ sumantra, if MiG-29k needs arrestor hooks, do our Aircraft carriers have them? Btw INS Viraat our only carrier has been called for major repairs to 'extend' its life period upto five years and will not resume service till 2009 !!! Thanks, Avijeet. All aircraft carriers have arrestor cables - these are the things that the hooks lowered by a landing aricraft try to catch. I remember seeing pictures of early biplanes coming in to land on old aricraft carriers, and pictures of some toppling over in cases where the hooks did not catch the cables - when the landing speed was (possibly understandably) low. I think planes come in with power enough to go up again, in case they miss all cables.
The Vikrant was coming apart on its seems when it was retired. The Hermes (Viraat) was a reasonably `seasoned' carrier when it was purchased, and every such machine often needs major repairs. Why do we go in for `old' hardware? Manufacturing an aircraft carrier is something quite difficult which not too many countries around the world can do. These (like refueller aircraft tankers: the IAF has the Il-7 are tremendous force multipliers, and no naval power would want to sell a new one, or dispose off something which they can profitably maintain. I think we are doing the best we can right now, and even with a slighly inferior Groshkov (Vikramaditya?), with enough firepower and some DRDO refitting, it will be a force to reckon with. Till then of course...
Cheers, Sumantra. |

Are you sure all carriers have arrestor cables? I think there are some that exclusively carry VTOL aircraft which shouldn't need them.
I was once told by a US Navy friend that aircraft that land (conventional style) on a carrier land with full thrust in case they need to abort the landing or miss the cable. |

Yes thats what i was asking because AFAIK we have Sea Harriers with the Navy which only need a shotfield runway ONLY if with full payload, else they are completely VTOL.
Arrestor cables are there in US naval ships, but im not too sure if they're there in our Viraat _________________ http://www.myspace.com/avsatsworld

I guess INS Viraat doesnt have arrestor cables, take a look at this:

Viraat does not have arrestor cables. Arrestor cables are needed for planes that cannot land verticaly. Navy has Sea Harrier that can land vertically. Although they can take off vertically as well, this not the standard practice as take off vertically requires a lot of fuel. Therefore there's a Ski Jump installed in front of the carrier. A harrier takes appx 200 feet of runway to take off.
Cheers

Sorry - I haven't verified. Maybe I'll ask someone in the know about it.
I had guessed that the Viraat would have arrestor cables because the Sea Hawks were not retired that quickly - they had operated with the Harriers for a brief period, IIRC.
The Sea Hawks are not VTOL aricraft.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Then you might be right. Perhaps they were removed later on? |

@sammyk, I've asked one of my friends in the Navy - I am waiting for his reply.
Additionally, I'm not sure about whether arrestor cables have to be visible at all times
if present.
Cheers, Sumantra. |
