I use the Icom A-6 everynight at work.Fantastic equipment. However I had the Transmission deactivated by an approved source & a certificate produced to that effect to cater to misuse.

I just got the Radio Shack Weather Alert a few weeks ago. It was pretty cool to listen to nJFK tower during that big storm we had a few days back. You can also listen to the Weather Service, hence the name, as well as fire/police communications and marine communications.

open the radio(caution: take care not to snap any wire in the procedure )
now search for metal coils within the circuit board. there will be about two to three such coils.
now on the radio and tune it to some radio station. touch your finger to each of the coil to see which of them causes a change in the frequency of the radio as the tuned station will become weak/ detuned on touching the coil. once you have identified the coil called local oscillator, remove carefully any wax or sponge inside the coil. for the job you have to use your nails or a screwdriver to increase the distance between each turn. as you increase the spacing you will feel the stations shifting behind. for example 107.1 mhz will now be tuned at a lower frequency indicated by the printed dial. lower frequency stations might not be even heard. increase the spacing till the highest frequency station now tunes at an indicated lower frequency. the rest of the dial space is the air band! 118-137 mhz. and its time to enjoy atc on your fm radio.
and dont forget to close the radio case.
and this method has nothing to do with the am ferrite rod. its the LCR method (i call it) where you change the inductance. hope i could describe the trick well.

Thanks a lot man. It is such a simple technique. Now Im glued to my radio set all day long. I think ill be able to clear my R/T license listening to this.

Try Extending a wire from your roof to the ATC reciever.

I want to buy the Maycom AR-108 on eBay or some place online, but my main concern is getting it shipped to India. Will there be any issues at the customs? Has anybody got one shipped to India lately? Please do let me know!

I came across this website: www.20north.com, through which you can order stuff from USA and they will deliver it in India. The price they quote includes the customs duty. I spoke to the customer service regarding getting a scanner and they said that customs won't be an issue.

I was looking at the Uniden BC72XLT scanner, and that comes to about 5700/-.

Wow! That looks good! Have you ordered yet? How many days do they say it takes for the delivery?

Have not ordered it as yet. A combination of work and procrastination keeps me from ordering it. Wink Planning to do it soon.

Congrats - if you don't mind my asking - from where and how much did you get this for?

The BIAL ATC frequencies are on my scanner at home - I'll try and upload the frequencies once I reach home tonight.

Nitin shared this link www.20north.com and I ordered it through them. It reached me hassle free, no issues with customs, etc. They charged me USD176 which came upto Rs.8804/- when I paid.

Thanks Nimish, will look forward to your post later tonight!

Well - decided to look it up online - I'd posted it on Wiki, but someone there decided that ATC frequencies is not useful information on Wiki. However the older revision is still available at: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bengaluru_International_Airport&oldid=216862925#ATC_frequencies_in_use

Thank You Nimish! Am able to receive signal fairy well though BIAL is nearly 35+ km by road from my place!

I don't know if its just me or if there are minor errors in the displayed frequencies. I'm receiving Bangalore Tower on 124.35 and Bangalore Approach on 127.75. Please do check the same and correct them if needed!

Just cross checked - and that version had some wrong frequencies. Anyway here are the current ones (AFAIK!):

SMC121.65; CD121.825; Approach ARR:121.25/ DEP:127.75; TWR124.35; TAR119.45

Source: http://www.aai.aero/public_notices/0021-2008.pdf - as authentic as it gets, unless it's been superceeded by a newer NOTAM or a supplement.

I checked for a newer supplement and could not find any. I also searched for any relevant NOTAMs - and nothing to be found...

Thats what I did 3 years back. Smile Wasted more than 5-6 radios for this. It requires a lot of patience as sometimes you might have caught the frequency but the ATC might not be speaking so you might think its not working. I am thinking of making one again as I can't afford a receiver right now.

My first attempt was a success. It was on an INOP diskman cum fm receiver. The output was average as it didnt have an external antenna.

Then I got greedy, bought an original Philips receiver worth 250 bucks, opened and did all the surgery work and the only thing I could hear clearly was Tssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh............

Now im back to the first one. Razz

If they're being arrested/ booked for this specific cause, I wonder why this question is being asked?

I thought they were booked for tracking A/C with the help of a Radar box and related S/W on PC. Just listening to ATC Conv. doesn't give me the flight path or the GPS co-ordinates. Anyways, to heck with GOI.

Quite simply: because as with all such media sourced reports, they are subject to the inadequacies of the reporters knowledge, leading to what I call "Chinese whispers" (no offence to the Chinese intended).

Until we know exactly what they were arrested for (ie. not some journalists "version") we can only speculate.

I am certainly no expert, but I am lead to believe that it was their more advanced equipment that was illegal. A journalist, not knowing the subtle differences between the various types of equipment and there capabilities, would just call the whole set up a "scanner". But this should not be taken alone as evidence that simply listening in on the civilian airband is illegal, or that "scanners" per se are illegal.

As Hawk has already stated, it is transceivers that require a license, not receivers. But if you are genuinely concerned you should do your own research.

A matter of perception really. To the paranoid Home ministry officials/local police, any such equipment found in your possession would be treated with suspicion.

Ditto, with the local police. Awareness is pretty low and one must not forget that these are troubled times. Besides, if one gets caught, then the wheels of redressal will not be that fast enough ... so its better to be safe than be sorry.
