Airlines find washing will smoothen the plane's body, reduce friction, and cut fuel usage
Wash your aircraft more often to save fuel costs. It might sound bizarre but this is only one of the many odd-yet-useful practices that the airlines are being motivated to follow by the International Air Transport Organization to reduce cost of operations. The logic goes something like this: washing the aircraft will ensure smoother surface of the body of the plane thereby reducing friction and, ultimately, fuel burnt. So spending some extra gallons of water may actually help save on fuel costs.
