Sorry about the late report, but I have been busy for the past couple of weeks so I really didn't have time to write a detailed report. Anyway here it is!

I got up at approximately 4:30, left shortly, and got to JFK by approx. 5:15. The drive to JFK was uneventful as it was early in the morning and there was not too much traffic. By the time we (by we I mean my family) dropped off our car at long term parking and arrived at Terminal 3, it was 5:30.

Upon arriving at the terminal, we were able to check in quickly as there was not a long line for the check in kiosks. The wait was to put our bags on the conveyor belt as there were only 5 agents checking bags. Terminal 3 is rather old, and although it is looking really sharp with a new paint job, with its lack of windows and low ceilings, it is overall not very appealing.

As all shops and food concessions were past security, immediately after check in we headed for security. The first checkpoint we went to had a very long line, but soon a very kind agent came and told us that there was another checkpoint that had virtually no line, so we followed her to that checkpoint, where we went through very quickly, until my mother was selected for an extra search.

I was famished from getting up so early, but I thought, just like flying long-haul in India! Since I was so hungry, I proceeded directly to the food court, which also has a good view of the tarmac. I did not take many pictures of the planes as there was very little activity at the moment, and I was in somewhat of a rush because the gate was at opposite end of the terminal from where the food court was.

The gate was crowded when we arrived, with almost no seats. The flight was overbooked, so they were looking for volunteers in exchange for “Delta Dollars”, which lets you use them for buying tickets for another flight.

We began boarding by 7:40. Boarding was by zones, which was very efficient. The crew was very welcoming on this flight, although forced smiles. After all the passengers had boarded the FA’s did a live safety demonstration, even though the aircraft had seatback televisions in each seat. Shortly after the safety demonstration the captain made an announcement that the flying time was approximately 5:19.

JFK-SEA

Flight: DL 627
STD: 08:20
ATD: 08:10
STA: 11:27
ATA: 11:31
Aircraft: Boeing 737-800
Load: 100%, not a seat empty.

We pushed back nearly 10 minutes early, which was a good thing, as we were approximately 12 in line for take off, and the headwind was stronger than usual. Take off was powerful and lasted no more then 12 seconds.

Immediately after take off the entertainment system was switched on. Delta has PTVs featuring Pay-Per-View movies, HBO, complimentary music on demand, live TV, complimentary trivia, as well as additional games for purchase. There is a place to insert your credit card in the TV in order to purchase a movie. I chose to watch CNN until we lost the signal somewhere over Minnesota. I then watched I-Xplor and enjoyed the window view until we regained the signal shortly before landing in Seattle.

30 minutes into the flight the FA’s came around with drinks and breakfast items. Delta allows you a choice between cookies, peanuts, and cheese and crackers. Also, additional food can be purchased.

The crew came around with drinks several times during the flight.

The seat was ok. The PTVs are touch screen, so you might be at a disadvantage if the person taps very hard. The width was adequate, as was pitch, so no complaints there.

Shortly after we entered Washington we were on our approach to Seattle. Approach was from the north and we made a smooth landing on runway 16C. We experienced a rather long taxi to the gate as the gate was the very last gate in Concourse A.

Overall, I would rate my experience with Delta to be a good one. We departed and arrived on time, and that is what matters the most to me. The crew was friendly throughout the flight, although forced smiles. The entertainment was good with PTVs and AVOD. The small snack that I had was actually quite good, I quite like those cookies that Delta offers.

After a wonderful week in Seattle, it was sadly time to head back home. Again I got up at 4 AM and after quickly dropping off our car and signing some papers we were at SEA by 4:30 AM. The line for New York was not very long, so check in only took 5 minutes, probably a new record, but it maybe due to the time of day too. Concourse A has a nice airy feel, and is decorated with art everywhere. However, our gate was the last one, which meant a long walk. T3 at JFK by comparison is built inside-out, with the check in at the center of the terminal making all gates feel close to the check in area. After having breakfast and a rather long walk, we were finally at gate 18. Unfortunately, our plane was out of sight. We did have a good view of the other airport action, and SEA was getting quite busy at this time. Boarding was announced at 6:15, and by 6:25 I was on board the aircraft.

SEA-JFK

Flight: DL 30
STD: 7:00
ATD: 7:05
STA: 15:30
ATA: 15:55
Aircraft: Boeing 737-800
Load: 100%

I took my seat at the window (don’t remember the number) and watched the airport activity. The airport was getting busy at this time.

Apparently there was an AA flight that was cancelled and some passengers were accommodated on this flight. At 7:05 we pushed back and the FA’s did another live safety demo. We were the only flight in line for take off, so taxi was quick.

As we were taxiing, we past a futuristic looking aircraft, my guess is that it is the fire training center, if anyone could enlighten me as to what it is I would appreciate it:

Take off was one of the loudest I’ve experienced in a 737. It could have something to do with my position, right behind the wing, but it got quieter as we got to cruising altitude.

The flight was pretty much the same as the previous one, with PTVs and the same meal as well. We again lost the satellite signal over the remote areas but regained it over Minnesota.

We began our descent at 15:10. Due to traffic at JFK, we had to hold for 5 minutes at approximately 60 miles north of JFK. Landing was quick after that. The FA’s didn’t make the final announcement about final landing preparations until we were less than 1000 feet in altitude and the FA’s had to rush to collect cups and glasses and sit down. Landing was on 4R, one of the shortest runways at JFK. After a hard touchdown and very heavy braking and thrust reverse (we were almost thrown into the seat in front of us) taxied off the runway.

There were no gates available when we landed, so we had to wait for 10 minutes for the gate to get cleared + another 10 minutes for the aircraft to taxi out of the alleyway. The flight attendant tried to divert our attention from delay by giving us some facts about the operation: that afternoon, there would be 300 flights alone, making it a very big operation.

We taxied in front of terminal 4 making for some interesting airlines and aircraft that I have never seen in person, such as AI’s 77L, and SQ, etc. There were many passengers with tight connections on our flight, so the flight attendants asked us to let them off first. Also, flight 30 continues on to Moscow on a different plane, a 767, so that flight would have to wait for us if we were very late.

We finally got to the gate at 15:55 and our bags came 30 minutes later, which was somewhat long to me.

Overall, it was a great trip to Seattle. All of the flights were generally good; they at least departed and arrived on time with the exception of the last one. The crew was good although rarely smiled. The entertainment was good and worked generally well. The cookies which were the only complimentary snack were delicious. Here is my flight rating for both flights:

Punctuality: 7.5/10
Seat: 7/10
Crew: 7/10
Food: 8/10
Entertainment: 9/10
Cleanliness: 10/10, spotless!

Thank you for reading, here are some pictures from the trip:

It'll work if the link ends with a jpg or gif extension. Not otherwise.
