Just saw the caption on India TV that BA Cabin Crew are to go on a strike from 29th Jan. Will it affect their ops? Any news?

Yes BA Cabin Crew are going on a strike from 0001H on Monday 29th through to 2359H on Wednesday 31st January.
It will definately affect their ops unless they come up with an alternative.
The strike is expected to continue between 5-7Feb. and 12-14Feb. as well.

The BA strike has been postponed for a day.So,all the arrangements made by the management to minimize the effects of the strike on 29th seem to go in vain.

LONDON (AFX) - British airlines bmi, Virgin Atlantic and EasyJet expect to pick up extra passengers over the two day period next week when the majority of British Airways' (BA) flights in and out of London are cancelled due to industrial action.

Around 150,000 BA passengers will have their travel plans disrupted because of the strike, which has come about because of a dispute with cabin crew over sick leave and pay. The first round of strikes are set to take place on Tuesday Jan 30 and Wednesday Jan 31.

BA cancelled all passenger flights out of Heathrow Airport for the two days after failing to resolve the dispute. All BA domestic and European flights to and from Gatwick airport will also be grounded. However, low-cost-carrier EasyJet, which flies to many of the same main city airports as BA from London, expects to pick up some of BA's passengers during the period.

'Logically, I would be surprised if we [EasyJet] didn't see an increase in passenger numbers as a result of the BA strike,' an EasyJet spokesperson told AFX News this morning. 'BA has cancelled all its domestic and European flights in and out of Gatwick - where we fly from - over the two days so I would be surprised if we didnt pick up some of those. We have around 15,000 seats available out of London Gatwick, Stanstead and Luton.'

Long-haul carrier Virgin Atlantic says it has no plans to provide extra services during the strikes but says it has already seen an increase in passenger numbers for Jan 30 and 31.

'We have no plans to put on any extra services on the days of the strike but we have seen an increase in passenger numbers, especially in our upper class cabins and in premium economy,' a Virgin Atlantic spokesperson told AFX News this morning.

bmi, meanwhile, which is Heathrow's second biggest airline, has placed larger aircraft on flights to Edinburgh and Glasgow as part of backup plans to carry passengers caught up in the strike. The airline said it is also likely to allocate larger aircraft on other routes.

'We are determined that during any period of BA's flight cancellations we will get passengers to their destination on the services of bmi wherever possible,' bmi's chief executive Nigel Turner said in a statement. 'Where practical we will be opening up more capacity on existing services to accommodate additional demand for seats. We will also operate additional services as and when more take-off and landing slots become available due to BA cancellations.'

Flights to and from the UK operated by BA franchise partners -- GB Airways, BMED, Longair and Sun Air -- and BA codeshare partners, including the Oneworld Alliance airlines will go ahead, however.

Nevertheless, Eurostar, the high-speed passenger train operator linking the UK with the Continent claims to have already seen a significant increase in bookings from passengers wanting to switch from plane to train over the strike dates.

'The strikes at Heathrow and Gatwick will force thousands of travellers to make alternative plans. We are seeing a repeat of the problems with fog before Christmas and with airport security last summer, and we are expecting thousands of extra travellers who have switched from flying,' Eurostars director of communications Simon Montague said in a statement.

British Airways strike call withdrawn after talks

London, Jan 29 (DPA) A British Airways (BA) strike that would have had worldwide repercussions for air passengers was called off at the last minute Monday.

The airline said here that 120 hours of negotiations with trade union leaders had led to an agreement, averting a 48-hour stoppage by cabin crew from 0001 GMT Tuesday.

BA had provisionally cancelled more than 1,300 flights from Heathrow and Gatwick airports in London.

'We are pleased that our negotiations with the T&G union have resulted in an agreement that removes the strike threat,' BA chief Willie Walsh said.

But BA said the deal had come too late to prevent disruption to the travel plans of tens of thousands of its customers on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

'We will endeavour to reinstate as many flights as we can for those days,' Walsh said.
