Airliners-India.net was started by a few members led by Aseem,to create a Site with a forum to Discuss Aviation & more so Indian Aviation.

Through the years We've had great posts,Good discussions, fantastic Photographers, great news clips & excellent meets thru this site.

There have been the occassional arguements/differences too.Thats what made this site normal.

Was just thinking What can be done to get the fizz in this site going.

I'm sure we in this group have many with valuable practical suggestions which we could all utilise to help this site grow.Any Suggestion however small would be worth hearing.

Thanks to all Involved throughout these years.....

Aviation is a fantastic field & Im sure we all are proud of it.

cheers.

I know its a lot to ask for MEL, but we need to keep our Indian aviation photos on this site itself, i mean host them. I will gladly upload my pictures to this site first and then to www.airliners.net.

Maybe the suggestion can be given to Aseem. I wouldnt mind paying a yearly fee for this site if it means getting better services. More than that, people who pay will be more careful about what they say and act in the forums.

Nitin

I agree with Nitin on this one, although i see absolutely nothing wrong with the website at all, i mean its easy & simple to navigate & uncomplicated, making it better in a way in which it becomes more appealing to our community is great.
All good from my end though Wink

I agree with deaphen... I am willing to upload my pictures here. This website better than a.net for info.

True, there's nothing wrong with the site but maybe it needs it's own identity. How about moving away from the A.net style color scheme? It tends to be a bit dark and gloomy.

Also, is Airliners-India.com (or .net) registered? If not, maybe you guys can get it registered and have it point here or maybe use paid message board software with more features?

I second a fee. Either a fee or place a Paypal Donation button somewhere and hope the users here are generous. Perhaps give extra privileges to those that pay. Like paid members can attach files, have avatars, etc., just something to set them apart.

I've seen the above work very successfully on other small boards so I don't see why it couldn't here.

main thing is this site needs a new moderator: someone like COUGAR to show the little ones how things are to be done!

naah! they are doing a good job!

but there needs to be an infusion of fresh blood considering the amouint of bloodletting that sometimes happens.

COUGAR and texdravid would be good additions to the moderation team. Can we have a vote please?

Nitin is suggesting a very good idea. He has ensured that Charity indeed begins at home.

Also it shall set AI net India in a league of its own.

Please let's focus on the topic at hand. We are looking for suggestions to help the site grow. It's very easy for the mods to to sit back and say "we run this site and we'll decide on everything", but clearly that's not the intention here. We're actively soliciting ideas, suggestions and options to help us grow the site and take it to "a league of its own".

On the topic of moderators - we just very recently finished expanding our mods team and we had all of 3 applicants. It was a fair and objective process, and everyone had a chance to apply. Rest assured, it'll happen again in the future, and both Jaysit and Cougar are more than welcome to apply.

No - it's absolutely not rude. And we'd welcome Cougar to apply at least the next time around when we look for mods.

Nimish, i think Biren is referring to my post about having our pictures hosted on airliners-india.net, personally, i find uploading to flikr to be drab and boring.

we need to add that extra spice to the site which would make it addictive! not that it already is... but how about shifting to a better server? im willing to chip in as well... a bigger server maybe? and a theme different from A.net...

I feel this site should have a better server where we can upload the pics easily and it can be seen by others.Rather than provide link to those pics.Coz I don't have a blue tooth on my PC and so it is difficult for others to view my pics.

I don't get the connection between you not having bluetooth and this site being hosted on a new server. How would it make a difference?

I do not quite agree with two points raised above.
1. I do not feel that those who have made Indian photographers a force to
reckon with - people such as Vivek, Nitin, Vishal, Sean, Sreenath and so
many others - need to send their work to a relatively new forum.
To draw a parallel with academic journals, it is generally not very feasible
to come out with a new journal and expect its citation index to skyrocket in a
very short time - the time line is far too long, usually. This is a bit
disappointing, but when does a new journal come into being? Typically, when
there is some clogging with regard to matter for publications accumulating at
a very high rate, and very long publication turnaround times result. We have
many fora for pictures, and I do not see the same situation here -
http://www.airliners.net, http://www.planepictures.net,
http://www.airpics.com, http://www.planespotters.net,
http://www.jetphotos.net, http://www.jetphotos.ch,
http://www.airplanephotozone.com/,
http://www.airplane-pictures.net/, and the like.
2. I do not agree with the idea of a premium membership on this forum. In my
personal opinion, the USP of this forum is the same status of every member,
having the same rights and privileges. Having something nice and free - can go
hand-in-hand, like the GNU and Linux movement in the software world.
Just my two paise...
To one and all - thanks for making this forum the wonderful place that it is!
Cheers, Sumantra.

What I meant was a easier way to post my pics on this site.I don't know how whether others post their pictures through blue tooth.I tried uploading so many picts without blue tooth but so far no luck.It has come only as a link.

Is there an easier way of posting pictures ,for those who don't have blue tooth

There seems to be only 20-30 members that post regularily, some members maybe just reading the posts.....The rest need to be filtered....Something which aseem does regularily.

About making this site paid & improve the facilities....I feel it will drop the number of posting members down still further,as most may not want to pay a sum.

Discussion over topics is what a forum needs...Thats lacking mostly at times.

It looks like the site just got a color theme change, from a.net style blue to a lighter set of colors.

Idea is to bring some freshness. I also removed the individual customization so that all can witness change, unless they had set this one previously.

When I mentioned paid membership I really didn't mean it as a requirement type thing but more like a donation. Everyone should get the same basic access as they are getting now but if they were to donate they could get some extra benefits. Those benefits could be small things like extra PM space, extra Attachments space, Custom title, and a little "Contributor" title next to their name. Just small stuff, nothing that would discourage anyone from posting here. The donations could help offset the cost of running the board and ultimately benefit the entire membership.

I don't see a change, so I guess I've been using this style all along. I find it the neatest style with the least distractions.

Perhaps one more thing that we can do is to be able to put up JetPhotos.net or Airliners.net.net image thumbnails here with greater ease.
Like on A.net forums typing >photoid:1221718< will give u the following result ( just the '<' signs the opposite way as quoting it the normal way was giving an invalid post) :-

That's a great idea. Some message boards make it even easier where all you have to do is enter the photo's ID number between special tags like [ANET][/ANET] just like you would use say [IMG] tags.

=======

Comment on current "theme". Nice theme but the fonts seem to be too big, is there a way to adjust, either globally or individually? I know you guys are still experimenting but this theme would look even nicer if there was some color added to it.

We should have a respected user column on our profiles just like how it is in Airliners.net.

The RR user column on Anet too is a debatable one,its more of a I like you rating rather than a Respect rating Smile

I don't really see anything wrong with this site.

We have a good solid platform for discussion and sharing pics., not any different than any other forum that I post on.

It serves it purpose most of the time, granted it has its moments but you can't expect perfection from a free service.

The only thing that I can think of is adding a mod/admin who has a good understanding of php to keep the site up to date with newer features of php.

TBH I would hate to have paid service for this site. I paid my $25 for airliners.net and that was money wasted since I never posted more than 5 times on the forums. Lets keep the site and open to all. Those that would like to donate should have the option.

AFAIK, We're not allowed to change the site or the php code used. This is what we get with this free service.

Ideally I'd like to see someone like Demand Media (owners of Airliners.net) come up with a light weight platform for custom sites. They could re-use all the scripts from A.net and could plug into the standard photos features they have going there. Would be a quick way for DM to make incremental revenue with minimal costs.
