I was on a flight with a friend the other day when I noticed a CD 737 parked next to our aircraft. I out of nowhere uttered 732 to myself, my friend was a little amused and wanted to know how I knew it was a Boeing and not an Airbus or is a 732 and not a 738 or an A320 Shocked

I was explaining him the way I recognize an aircraft type without looking at the markings on the aircraft (showing off my rather limited expertise, lol), and got this idea of learning more by starting a similar post.

At a glance how does one recognize what aircraft/aircraft type is it? (leaving aside the cockpit differences/similarities)

The reason for me to post in Tech/Ops is to welcome all kind of responses, basic, technical, ultra-technical, jargoned/jargon-free Smile. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

    1. All Boeing 737 series aircrafts (except 732) have a rather weird looking tail, which is connected to the fuselage with this extension.

    2. The normal exit doors on an Airbus aircraft open differently than that to most of the Boeing aircrafts.(except a 777 right?)

Airbus a320's door for example slides outside and shifts to the right (port side) and left (starboard side) when opened. Boeing 737's door on the other hand swings open like a normal house door.

    Boeing

    Airbus

    From the inside:
    Boeing 747

    Airbus 321

to be continued...

another way
Cockpit windows.....normally #3 window in a 'bus is 5-edged shape...while boeing is 4 sided.

Also the tail area.....in a Boeing, the fuselage / tailcone aft of the fin is curved
downwards (what english Wink )...while in a 'bus its straight till the end.

Also the 'bus tends to sit a bit taller .... due to its long legs

My 2-bit

I guess one gets used to it with time.
I personally can identify most aircraft well after so many years surrounded by them.
About the Dorsal fin on the B732 its different for the B733-B739s.The B731 & B732 had a different one.

Hmm... I identify a 732 with the 733-4-5-6-7-8-9, like the 732 has P&W JT8Ds and the rest have CFMs. Boeing 73Xs are fat and chubby, whereas the A320 is sleeky. As Raj said, the 320's legs are tall, the 737s legs are short.
The A319&A320, A319 has one wing emerg. exit, and A320 had 2 emerg exits. And A321 has 4 doors on either side.
The 757 and A321, the 757 nose cone is drooping down , and A321's nose is
like the A320.
My english has suffered in this post! Confused And of course its natural now to identify an a/c.
