One question guys, for Haj flights do the pilots and crew have to be all Muslim because I believe non muslims cannot enter mecca?

No it goes like this:
The crew operate the flight from India to SHJ (IC) and then there is a change of crew. The new crew members operate SHJ-Jeddah-SHJ and then the crew again changes. No crew member is allowed to leave airport premises.

Aah thanks for that. But that leads to another question, that is if the crew is not allowed to leave the plane then why is there a change of crew at Sharjah is it because of the flight operating time factor?

Or if the the crewis muslim then why are they not allowed to deboard?

Cheers

Crew is changed because of maximum crew operating time limit...i dunno the exact term for that.

Another thing...there is a barrier in Jeddah/Mecca...both beyond which non-muslims are not allowed to cross. If found you can be shot on the spot. So even the indian crew can visit till that barrier.

Another general question and hopefully I am not going OT, but does anyone know why exactly non muslims are not allowed into mecca? Just curious not trying to cause offence to anyone?

Also say someone did get in esp someone with a brown skin, how would they know whether a person is muslim or not?

Cheers

No non muslims are allowed into Mecca inside the gates...as i mentioned. Else only crew members...u as a passenger will not be allowed to fly till Mecca just for fun Wink
Regarding the second question...solution is passport...

Unfortunately just a passport wud not be sufficient was it doesnt hv an column for religion!! Smile

To enter mecca, if u r a non-saudi citizen, u need to hv either an Umrah or a Hajj visa, w/o which entry would not be allowed to Mecca. If you are in KSA on a workpermit, u r issued an iqama in lieu of ur passport (which u surrender to ur sponsor). Muslims get a green coloured Iqama n rest get a brown coloured one. So its kinda easy to detect a non-muslim at the entry point to Mecca.

Also AFAIK the AI Hajj flights fly to Jeddah (the special haj terminal), where there are no issues with non-muslims entering the city. So i guess the religion of the crew is not a problem. Only SV Hajj flights frm India wud be landing in Madinah. However I am not sure of this info.
