Thought you all might be interested in this... some great videography to capture the incident in the first place!

Just wondering why it took them so long to shut down the engine!
Enjoy and marvel at why the crew train for incidents in the sims on a regular basis! _________________ If it isn't broke - then dont try to fix it! |

As you know a post V1 engine failure (or fire) means we continue and our first priority is to fly the aircraft. That is, climb up and away and deal with the engine fire later.
Airbus recommends that the crew don’t take any action until climbing thru 400 feet. Not sure what Boeing recommends but I bet they (and the airlines) want pilots to wait a while before being distracted by flipping switches.
So… fire… rotate …. climb …. then start the shut down procedure. Didn’t seem that long. 20 seconds? _________________ eP007 |

The Pilots will probably realise that the EGT & Fire warnings gave them, before stablizing the Aircraft & Initiating the shutdown process. This could be the added seconds involved.

Well Boeing recommends you get the acft under control before playing fastest-fingers. It also says the RECALL items can be started at 400 feet at CMDs discretion.....even though ideally they would like you to clean up the acft before starting the checklists.
And the 400ft actions can be done for ENG FIRE/SEVERE DAMAGE/SEPARATION. for everything else you climb to your MFRA (Min Flap Retraction Alt) which is normally 1000 ft AGL but can be min of 800 ft AGL, clean up the acft, accelerate and then carry out the checklists. |
