India abandons spy satellite launch under US pressure

TechSAR was to be launched with Israeli help last month

NEW DELHI: India’s strategic space-based surveillance (SBS) programme has suffered a huge setback.

Following last-minute US pressure, the launch of an Indo-Israeli spy satellite with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) was aborted literally at the launch pad stage.

Images from the satellite, with sub-metre picture resolution, would have significantly boosted India’s intelligence-gathering abilities. The satellite is capable of obtaining sharp images of civilian construction activities, including nuclear plants, that may have a strategic bearing. It can also scan cloud-covered mountain peaks. Lack of this capability enabled Pakistan-backed militants and army regulars to entrench themselves on the heights of Kargil, necessitating a huge armed response with many casualties.

If the SAR satellite had been launched on schedule, it would have been a first for both Israel and India.
This is the second strategic programme to have received a setback after American intervention in recent times. Earlier, India curtailed the range of its missiles under development to 5,000 km under US pressure. It has advised military scientists not to think of developing a full-fledged inter-continental ballistic missile above 800 km range.

India might increasingly bend to US pressure in military matters.

What do you mean outcome?
The satellite was successfully launched to the desired orbit. What more do you expect? India has the ability to launch satellites for other countries for a very cheap price and they have done it before for Italy as well.
Do you mean outcome as how many orders for launches we'll get after this?

Why did you look as my statement as a negative one.

When I statedOutcome it was as in How the sattelite launch programme success will be viewed by other nations who had a stronghold on such bussiness [I know this is not te 1st launch] & whats more interesting would be India's Spy sattelites in space tilting the defence balance in our favour, which most defence top brass would be keen on.

The launch has nothing to do with India's spy satellite, I even don't know if there is one. It only shows the ability to launch satellites by ISRO and it has nothing to do with defence.

Thats why I said "Outcome".
India will use the facility or already using the facility to launch their spy sattelites.

You are still missing the point. India had the capability to launch satellites 10 years back, it didn't have to wait till it launched this one. If it wanted it could have done it before, if it had one.
The commercial launch has nothing to do with it. India, if it wants, should figure out to build a proper satellites for the purposes you mentioned. But it is no way related to the satellite launched last week. If India wanted and had one it could have launched it 10 years back.
So, your term outcome in your context has no point. This launch shows nothing new, just that ISRO could do what it has been doing for past 10 years.

I get what you are saying. The debated launch programme has no relation to the Spy sattelite programme of India.
Are you saying India has had similiar capability to launch such sattelites 10 yrs earlier too.I don't think so.

Why you don't think so? My house is closer to ISRO than yours Wink
Seriously, I did my Master's thesis in ISRO.
If you look at the list below, In sep 1997 was the first time they sucessfully did this. It was no secret and the sucessful launch was in the news also, but people must not have appreciated the capability, but all the scientists made it clear that they could lauch satellites commercially. The main aim of this programme was to generate revenue for ISRO/India.
http://www.isro.org/mileston.htm
First operational launch of PSLV with IRS-1D on board
(September 29, 1997). Satellite placed in orbit.
This was launched from India(all PSLV series are launched from India). You can see other satellites also placed in orbit after that (1999,2001...... etc).
I am surprised that you don't know.

For that one most of the satelite part should be the job of DRDO and launch should be of ISRO. Technically ISRO doesn't need to deal with military stuff, it is the DRDO's area.

Ya, cos our technology is not as sophisticated as the west to make these kind of satellites.
