Since it is going to be Makar Sakranti on Jan 14, 2007 wherein people offer each other Tilgud ( A sweet made of Sesame Seeds ) and say Tilgud ghya ani goud goud bola ( Marathi for eat this sweet laddu made of tilgud and speak sweetly)

This festival is also associated with Kite flying.

Quote:
The Indian festival of Makar Sankranti is devoted to kite flying in some states where it is a public holiday. This spring festival is celebrated every January 14 (or January 15 on leap years), with millions of people flying kites all over northern India. The cities of Ahmedabad and Jaipur are particularly notable for their kite fighting festivals. Highly maneuverable single-string paper and bamboo kites are flown from the rooftops while using line friction in an attempt to cut each other's kite lines, either by letting the line loose at high speed or by pulling the line in a fast and repeated manner. The activity is not without risk as the line is treated to be abrasive and flyers can, and occasionally do, fall from the rooftops.

i used to have great fun when i was schooling in gujarat back in my younger days.. since my dads side is from there!!.. it was fun

especially now since its the season for "undhiyu" a mouth watering and one of my favourite gujarati dish made from "surti papdi" and other vegetables that normally are available only during the winter months Laughing

unfortunately once you have a working life... especially in the airlines.. you can forget your social life Rolling Eyes

but i still remember the days of flying kites the full day even in hot sunshine and yelling "kaatiye" !! Very Happy those rooftop to rooftop fights were fun indeed!! cut fingers and split webbings not withstanding!

We in the US depend on Vadilal's Frozen Undhiyu mix, which is available all year round. Laughing Unless of course the wifey is in real mood of making it from scratch (which she seems to be game this weekend). Rolling Eyes

They say if you 'get' a kite its lucky. Now this means if you're gifted with one by somebody or it comes and falls near you or anything like that. now this one was hanging for about 45 mins taking the support from my window yet not a damage in the kite. Means nice luck! Lets hope.

Awesome Mel, you owe us pictures Wink

Great words by Dr. Daisaku Ikeda. “The secret to flying kites is running straight into the wind. When faced with a strong wind the kite rises. Life’s challenges and problems are your strong wind. Your chance to rise.” Wink
