India's aviation boom has made it possible for hundreds of thousands of people to fly for the first time in their lives, but the increasing aircraft congestion could also be risking passenger safety, experts say.

“There is a series of compromises taking place in the interest of easing air traffic. Like in Delhi, they have opened the second runway, but is it as airworthy as the first? No,” said retired Air Marshal Denzil Keelor, an aviation consultant.

From three domestic airlines in 2001, the country now has at least 10 domestic carriers, many of which also fly overseas.

“Incidents of air-miss are increasing significantly, and it is difficult to track and investigate every incident. With all these new airlines coming up, many incidents are not reported,” said a government aviation official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media.

Although this cannot be classified as an air miss but during my flights to GHY and back i actually saw two aircrafts cross our path during the flight. An Air Deccan A320 while going and IC A320 while comin back. Although those planes must be around 1000 feet below us. Frankly speaking i did not expect to witness this event.

Has anyone also had the same experience?
Cheers

I believe that the risk associated with crowded skies is not due to the number of planes flying, it’s the inadequate atc management. The industry is tiny in India, and even though we love to talk about how we're growing at 40% a year, in terms of real numbers Indian aviation is nothing.
Now im not blaming the controllers (by saying atc management) rather im blaming the system, outdated equipment and ancient laws. We need to radically modernise our airspace use, atc centers and seperation limits (make them less)
