according to his announcement, if you are a broadband subscriber of state-owned telecom firm MTNL or BSNL, you should be surfing the Internet at a connectivity speed of 2 Mbps from January 1. This is many times faster than the ubiquitous 256 Kbps connection passed off as broadband until now. And, you should be getting the higher speeds at no extra cost.

Seems the bump up in speed is permanent.

currently i used Hathways 24x7 Cable Internet.. and its pretty good i'd say but not as blazing fast as 2Mbps.. but more importantly is the cost.
i have paid for 6months a total of 5000INR so my contract doesn't run out till April.. and this scheme is unlimited download.. since i download a lot of trance and house music (my comps on practically 24x7) i'd be interested if they had a similarly priced scheme with those speeds!! _________________ If it aint Boeing.. 500 rupees per month * 6months = 3000 rupees with MTNL.
And 500 rupees is that you download every minute
The simple plan on which i told my family to take is about 200 rupees
Savings and speed are assured. _________________ I love the smell of Jet Fuel in the morning. |

In this semi colon at the far end of the globe chasing the dateline, we get 3.5 Mbps for NZD 40 a month ie 1200 rupees a month.
But next year NZ shud get ADSL2+ at 24Mbps. Hopefully be soon.

Hey i realised it yesterday that my internet had become rather too fast. Thanks for telling Akshay. Btw is it for all Triband schemes or only some? And is it temporarily free or will it be charged later? _________________ http://www.myspace.com/avsatsworld

It's the same in BLR - most BSNL users are now connecting at 2Mbps speeds - at no additional charges. Kudos to BSNL for this market-disrupting move - definitely puts them at a huge advantage.
Unfortunately I have airtel broadband at home - I don't know whether/when they're going to respond, but I'm sure they'll have to respond sooner than later. |

380,
All schemes except unlimited download & night unlimited will be upgraded at no cost. It is a different thing that some even NU users are getting 2 Mbps. |

MTNL and BSNL have converted all 256 KBPS connections to 2 MBPS. I too have an Airtel connection. It is still the same old speed. _________________ Save Maharashtra! |

MEL,
when I visited Youtele's website, they too had a couple of 2 Mbps plans on offer. I think that the plan they have is more attractive as they have a free download limit of 1 GB compared to 400 MB offered by MTNL at almost the same rental. The charge for excess usage too is 50 p as against 1 re of MTNL.
But, I think that MTNL will soon increase the download limit to 1 GB as BSNL has already done it (usually BSNL & MTNL see to it that their tarriffs are same).

A friend of mine is getting such speeds (a bit less than what I am getting) with BSNL too. I think they too have started upgrading their lines

IMO, You tele has the best plan with 1 GB download on 2 Mbps line. I dunno what is the quality of their service though. |

Phew - thank god. I was thinking us Airtel broadband users were going to be stuck on slower speeds for the rest of our lives. Hope that they make the move soon. |
