My second time on this flight and as usual 9W did a great job.

08-11-07 CCU-BKK Suvarnabhumi
flight no. - 9W 66
aircraft - B738
Class- economy
STD - 1155
ATD - 1155
STA - 1615
ATA - 1610
Load - 75%

Reached CCU at 0930. Long que for baggage x-ray as there was a delayed EK flight to DXB and an AI to LHR alongwith a couple of Biman flights, a GMG flight, and a IC flight which had their listings on the departures board. The rather small check in area at CCU looked cramped and in need for a refurbishment.I was able to reach the 9W x-ray machine in 5 mins.Check in was a breeze. Was able to get my desired seat. 9W cabin crew came and filled in some forms. The girls looked really hot. Most were Thai and only one i think was Indian. They looked good in their yellow jackets.immigration did not take time and within a few minutes i was in the departure area. There is presently no duty free shop at CCU which i found funny.I was able to see the AI B744 "Sanchi" which was at gate 2 and boarding to LHR.The flight appeared pretty full seeing the number of people at the boarding gate.At 1120 boarding for our flight to BKK was announced.I was surprised to see a 75% load despite this being a day before Diwali. After the customary inflight safety announcements the aircraft pushed back and was 5th in the que to take off.Caught a glimpse of the massive AI plane taking off alongwith a KF,Indigo and Spicejet.
Soon after the flight took off, menu cards and cold towels were distributed.Meal choice was between Indian vegetarian and a Thai non veg main course which consisted of stir fired Prawn in basil, vegetables in green curry and steamed rice.I chose the Prawns (not shrimp) and it was delicious.I washed down the delicious meal with a couple of glasses of good Australian white wine. After about 20 mins we were served coffee and i ate my saved desert (a rich chocolate cake) then.IFE entertainment was AVOD and i managed to see a episode of Friends alongwith some Premier league highlights.
Within no time the pilot announced that we had begun our descent and that we should be at Suvarnabhumi airport 5 minuted before our schedule arrival time.We touched down promptly at 1610.Landing was smooth and i was soon in BKK city. All in all a extremely pleasant experience with 9W.

If i were to award 9W points on certain paratmeters they would be like this on a scale of 10 :

on time performance -10
plane cleanliness - 10
cabin crew - 10
IFE - 9
Meal and bar- 10
luggage retrieval - 9

TR on BKK-CCU will follow.

Wow! the 738 had PTV's in economy? Was it in international config(16 J seats with 60" pitch?)

Not too sure about the J class seat pitch but i'm pretty sure that they had more than 16 seats i J. Yes PTV's in every economy class seat.9W is giving TG and AIX a run for their money on this the Kolkata-Bangkok busy sector. However they need to work on their timings.A 1155 departure from CCU means a arrival 1615 at BKK, and then u get caught in rush hour traffic in BKK.So primarily its a whole day wasted. They should have a early morning departure.AIX's 7 am departure from CCU is perfect. If anyone works in 9W, could you please consider rescheduling the flights to a more convenient timing.

If teh 738 had more than 16 J-class seats then it was NOT the international configured aircraft.

I think there are only 4 of those dedicated to doing BOM-SIN and DEL-SIN

Nice TR...interesting to note teh 75% yield because CCU-Bkk still doesnot make money for 9W - unlike Del-Bkk which has brken even (as per their results presentation)
This aircraft is from the way u described it a regular 737-800 with winglets and IFE (identical to the new aircrafts on domestic routes) with a registriation of VT - JGQ to VT JGW (X, Y & Z are 700s). And these are different aircraft from the 3 ASEAN aircraft -(VT JGE, JGF, JGG) 737-800s with 16 J and 104 Y which dont have PTVs - in Y those aircraft have a drop down screen and in J, they give the personal entertainment player (which never works).

I dont think they can change the timings because Bkk-CCu-Bkk is slotted to sync with Del-Bkk-Del (same aircraft rotation - Del-Bkk-Ccu-Bkk-Del) Bit of a chicken and egg situation i guess because if they dont change teh CCu time, it will never be attractive to a business flyer. Having said that, i much prefer the day time flights - atleast u get a decent nights sleep - which you can never do on an overnight flight to east asia.

He said 75% LOAD not YIELD!! 9W is entering a new market: so they are discounting to build market share. Higher loads but at Lower yields! Once they stabilise on loads, the airline starts tweaking the fares upwards to improve yields.

its a fine game this: Yield Management!

The DEL-BKK and CCU-BKK flights are served by crew based out of BKK and are Thai nationals. This crew is also a part of the DEL-BRU-JFK sector. Essentially they do a BKK-(CCU)-DEL-BRU-JFK-BRU-DEL-(CCU)-BKK trip in abt 10 days time!!

Similarly the BOM-BRU-EWR route has crew frm SIN serving too.

Nimish, I noticed this on all the four flights on the DEL-BRU-YYZ and return sector. While chatting with the F/As they informed me of this arrangement.
