There was this article in the HT about pax who were bumped off at Delhi due to over-booking, bound for USA and Far East.

http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_1893145,00020016.htm

It then quotes the APAI chief Sudhakar Reddy stating as follows:-

""Air Passengers Association of India president Sudhakar Reddy said: "Denying boarding passes to confirmed ticket holders due to overbooking is highly unethical. They can't do it to passengers. Legally it can be challenged. If some passengers collectively approach us, we will engage a lawyer in Mumbai to take up the matter. In case of overbooking, airlines can persuade a passenger to take an alternate flight or ask other passengers without urgency to defer their trip with adequate compensation so as to allow the ones in urgency to be accommodated.""

+++

Why APAI should suggest going to lawyers in Mumbai when the pax have options of Delhi or their destination points, is beyond me.

Do we have any info on what can be done in such cases, what are the real rules in India?

there have been n number of discussions and debates on this... legally and otherwise...

i have mixed feelings on both ideas.. but knowing the nature of business that the airline industry and operations of flights is... i tend to side with the right of the airline to oversell capacity provided it is at reasonable limits.

Most Pax agree for the Extra goodies offered in case of overbooked flights.Airlines overbook hoping that there would be some cancellations,sometimes this backfires,but mostly most Pax get good offers to hold back their travel.
There was a Documentry on Overbooking on BBC worls some years back explaining the scene.

Can it really be challenged legally? I thought most airlines oversold tickets.

I think that if passengers with confirmed seats do not make it on their flight the compensation paid to themshould be standardised, fair and universally understood.
