The Singapore air force is considering greater use of eye surgery to widen the pool of promising candidates for training as fighter pilots, the military said on this week, says a UNI report.
With perfect to near-perfect vision a must for the pilots, the air force has given laser eye surgery to a trial group of potential pilots. The photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) procedure uses a laser to reshape the cornea. More studies are needed to determine if the surgery will become more commonplace in the military, Brigadier-General Ng Chee Khern has said.
The surgery can improve a person’s daytime vision, but side effects include a poorer ability to see at night.
The study on corrective eye surgery follows moves by other air forces, including the US Air Force, to make the procedure more available. Good eyesight is considered vital for spotting the enemy first in aerial dogfights. The air force in the city-state has relaxed its eyesight requirements in the past several years, accepting some pilot candidates who wear glasses of up to 150 degrees as fighter and helicopter pilots. Transport pilots can wear glasses of up to 300 degrees. Singapore has one of the highest rates of short-sightedness or myopia in the world.

Is the IAF listening?

Do our TOP BRASS ever listen unless their palms are greased.

In other case, if the lenses come manufactured from Sukhoi or MIG factories, then maybe they'd be a hit with IAF Rolling Eyes
