Getting ready for the visit of this massive ship when news comes in that it will be berthed off Chennai at about 5 nautical miles. (One of the world's largest aircraft carriers.)
Political parties here --- Jayalalithaa --- have been raising the issue of nuclear radiation so this is the compromise solution. Left parties also want it out and have energised the dock workers unions to protest!!
Will try and get the pics, but it seems it will be visible from the air on all flights into chennai that use the Bay of Bengal approach for take-off and landing.
A ship visit had been planned but thats off now.
Crew will however carry out social activities in and around Chennai. Let's hope this doesn't include Phillippine-type activities!!!!
But the irony can;t be missed. The last time an aircraft carrier came calling was in 1971 when the US sent in the USS Enterprise to the Bay of Bengal to intimidate us. Of course, we didn't blink then. But we seem to be blinking differently now.
Weather also seems to be getting rough now. Heavy rains. So let's see how this visit goes.

Indian Navy is also sending observer ships and the grapevine is that a submarine from Vizag will be lurking underwater at a discreet distance. |

I don't see what all the hue and cry is about her visit
..... I don’t think their fears of radiation are the main motive behind the opposition. _________________ eP007 |

Where's the battle group going to be?? Normally Supercarriers are surrounded by battle groups and it includes upto two submarines. I am sure the submarines will not dare come near the 200 mile exclusive zone, but what about the other ships??
Cheers

Many residents have contacted the media offices/Chennai government to say that a few fighter planes with foreign markings were seen over the Tambaram area and then heading off towards far south Chennai.
Seems to be aircraft from Nimitz. If it is confirmed and made public, there is expected to be major tamasha over allowing US military aircraft landing facilities. |
