Hi Gang,
The latest edition of the magazine "Time Out" features an article on aviation enthusiasts in Mumbai. The article talks about aviation photography as a hobby and the lack of acceptance by the authorities.
A Time Out journalist had contacted me around a month ago and I had spoken to him about how we are a group of like minded individuals, interested in planes, their technical specs, routes, liveries, etc.
My picture of the Air India 772ER, "Neelambari" also features in the article. Do check it out!

Registered & read the Article.
A mistake present as the Reporter implies that Photography was restricted but now lifted except at Defence Aerodromes.Gives a wrong Impression.
The Tarmac no photography rule is still in place. The Spotters are outside the Airport premises so not applying to them.
BTW nice to see your pics on the page.Congrats.
Pity no mention of our Airliners-India.net group

Article is nice.
In larger interest Vivekman you should have taken this opportunity and showcased www.airliners-india.net in the magazine.
It would have given a deep meaning and a sense of belonging.
Nice picture though. _________________ Dictum meum pactum, "My word is my bond". |

here is the article
Plane truths
Leo Mirani chats with some fly-by-night camera operators.
When an Airbus A380 made an appearance in Mumbai early last month, the hillocks at the eastern end of the runway were covered with curious onlookers. As the behemoth flew overhead, a rousing cheer went up from the gathered presswallahs, locals and a contingent of Mumbai’s community of aviation enthusiasts. Dedicated to airplanes in much the same manner as trainspotters of old, airplane aficionados routinely trek to vantage points in the periphery of the airport – the Kurla end of runway 27, Saki Naka, the Jari Mari slum and Juhu beach – to click pictures of aircraft.
Though the community has no formal structure and rarely interacts in real life, members post pictures on www.airliners.net, which is the premier site for aviation pictures, and on www.myaviation.net, which allows amateurs to upload pictures indiscriminately. A search for pictures taken at Mumbai airport on Myaviation throws up close to 1,000 images, ranging from shots of airplanes queuing up and pictures of Mumbai from the air to spectacular night shots of the tarmac.
Until recently, taking pictures of airports and aircraft was prohibited by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, but the ban has been rescinded at all but military air bases. However, with the ever-pervasive paranoia about terrorism, amateur photo-graphers still need to exercise caution when taking pictures of the airport. Vivek Manvi, a quality manager at a BPO and an amateur photographer for eight years, said that though he hasn’t faced any problems himself, “there is still no acceptance [by the authorities] of aviation photography as a hobby”.

Ha! It is hard to convince authorities out in US I would forget about it.
Long story short one big altercation had, the deputy goes "fishing I understand a hobby, I love fishing, I do not understand how photographing aircrafts can be a hobby" . Given a different set of circumstances, I would have given him piece of mind "What's the fun in sitting all day long hoping that a fish will stupid enough to take your bait and at the end of day you end up killing a living thing as a part of your hobby" . But my main aim to get him off my back, I was just "Uhh!! OK!! ..." and the circumstances were bit different at that point.
Maybe some day I might share the whole story ... |
