The smoke is generated by activation of a FLIR device by the aircraft. This is typical on military transport A/C, as the one featured which need to deploy a heat deflector array to confuse an heat seeking missles that might be launched at it either in flight of whilst landing (eg: the procedure is normal for all military tpt A/C landing at Baghdad at present).
