Vistara plans flight to Newark via LGW from DEL. Jet tried this before with limited success. Marginal yields at best unless they can get breakeven traffic yields on LGW-EWR-LGW.
And DEL again ? May be they should try from BOM where there is less competition. |

BOM is a bad idea IMHO. You already have two nonstops between BOM and EWR, unless of course Vistara's product is so superlative that the moneyed gujju crowd will give United and AI a heave ho.
Vistara will most likely use AI's fifth freedom rights (they will have the same owner, soon remember?) to pick up LGW - EWR pax.
And it's not a bad idea either. If you work in Central London's financial district, it is easier to get to LGW than to LHR. The Virgin Gatwick Express takes 30 mins to go from LGW to London Victoria (the heart of London). It takes more than an hour to do that distance by tube from LHR. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Vistara eyes London-Newark flights
04.11.2021
Having secured its US Foreign Air Carrier Permit (FACP) in late August, India's Vistara (UK, Delhi Int'l) has now disclosed that it holds slots for services from Delhi Int'l via London Gatwick to New York Newark for the current winter season.
According to Airport Coordination Limited (ACL), the Indian full-service carrier has slots to operate a total of 63 flights from Gatwick to Delhi (translating to 3x weekly flights) and the same number from Gatwick to Newark during the season ending in late March 2022, with up to 299 passenger seats per departure.
The airline has yet to announce plans to serve the United States, although it said earlier that it hoped to debut the route during the current quarter.
Vistara, a 51/49 joint venture between Tata Group and Singapore Airlines Group, operates just two B787-9s with 299 seats each, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows. The two aircraft do not have separate crew rest areas and are currently used for services to Bangalore Int'l, Frankfurt Int'l, London Heathrow, and Paris CDG (launching on November 7, 2021). If the airline operates flights via London, it will be able to change crews in the United Kingdom and thus avoid the issue of a lack of crew-rests.
Newark is a hub for United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare), which has a one-way code-share partnership with Vistara covering the latter's domestic services out of Delhi and Mumbai Int'l.
United Airlines is the second-largest player in the US-India direct air market with a 44% market share by scheduled departure capacity, the ch-aviation capacities module shows. The airline flies from Newark to both Delhi and Mumbai. Air India (AI, Mumbai Int'l) has a 52.2% share, while American Airlines (AA, Dallas/Fort Worth) is a minor competitor with a 3.8% share.
Currently, there are no flights from Gatwick to Newark. United Airlines and British Airways (BA, London Heathrow) fly to the New Jersey gateway from London Heathrow. Gatwick's services to New York JFK are operated by British Airways and JetBlue Airways (B6, New York JFK), the ch-aviation schedules module highlights. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Has anyone flown on Vistara lately? Heard they are a pretty crappy affair. Can someone confirm?
A German youtuber posted a video saying that he had inside sources telling him about the 'corruption' in the airline. If true, who are these corrupt people and why is the Tata group doing nothing?
And again, why do Delhi-based airlines end up getting this bad rep? _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

I flew them on a domestic leg to BOM and had no issues with the airline. It was on time, food was ok. The premium economy is more like Economy plus in United, just more leg room, everything else the same. |

I take vloggers reviews with a pinch of salt. If a crew request them to not film something or does not smile at them, they term the whole trip and airline as a "disaster". Ends up being very entitled and brattish
I have never been a fan of vlog style trip reports, where 70-80% of the report is the person's face. |

Well, this blogger actually showed pictures of scratched armrests and dirty AC vents - in an A321 that was just an year old.

Vistara mulls short-term leases due to B787 delays
27.03.2022
Vistara (UK, Delhi Int'l) is evaluating its fleet options for its planned expansion to the United States in light of the ongoing suspension of new B787 deliveries due to manufacturing issues, Chief Executive Vinod Kannan told the Business Standard daily.
"We have asked Boeing for updates. We still don't have a firm picture on that. So, we have started looking at other options on whether we should get a temporary lease of aircraft. The only drawback is the current fuel price. From a financial perspective, we are evaluating this," he said.
The full-service carrier's widebody fleet currently comprises two B787-9s, with a further four on firm order from Boeing. However, Vistara's B787s are configured for medium-haul services with reduced maximum take-off weight and no crew rest areas. They are also fully utilised on the airline's current network, flying to London Heathrow, Frankfurt Int'l, and Paris CDG. As such, the current fleet is insufficient for a planned US expansion.
Vistara intended to add more B787-9s for its North American flights. The carrier secured its foreign air carrier permit in 2021 for services via London Gatwick. However, Kannan said Vistara was now also evaluating non-stop flights.
"Even for one-stop [services], I need new aircraft because the current aircraft are being fully utilised. So, if I take a new aircraft, it is better to do it non-stop. All these things are currently under negotiations," the CEO explained.
Kannan added that Vistara is to remain an independent carrier even after its 51% shareholder Tata Sons acquired Air India. Recently, Tata Sons and minority shareholder Singapore Airlines Group injected an additional INR5 billion rupees (USD65 million) into Vistara.
"The fact is that the shareholders have been supportive. Recently, there has been an infusion of funds. What happens eventually is something that is under discussion by the shareholders. My message to the staff is very clear. We are still Vistara - an independent, separate airline. We are taking another 20 aircraft in the next two years. So, let's focus on that," he said. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

So I flew Vistara a couple of weeks ago. Both my flights were on the ex-9W 737s. The interiors have been changed to the Vistara branding. The legroom economy class is cramped, and not suitable for anything longer than one hour. The service was good and the crew were professional. They handled a difficult lady who was refusing to wear a mask with a lot of tact and patience. The planes were clean and the flights on time. The service is quite acceptable. They provided a complimentary snack which wasn't very tasty but is quite something in this day and age.
I would fly them again. They aren't much more expensive than 6E either - only a couple of hundred rupees more. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

I flew their premium economy product a few months ago on a 90 minute flight. The premium economy is similar to United or Delta economy plus, just more leg room but the same width.
The snack was ok, the flight was worth it for the extra price, primarily because of the extra bag allowance which I wanted. |

Vistara considers short-term B787 leases
01.07.2022
Vistara (UK, Delhi Int'l) is scouting the market for B787s available for short-term leases to cover delays in new deliveries by Boeing (BOE, Washington National), Chief Executive Vinod Kannan told reporters during the 2022 IATA AGM in Doha.
"I would like to have [more B787s] yesterday. But the facts are that these things do take time... The last thing we want is to hurry and get stuck with an aircraft that we cannot utilise viably," he said.
He underlined that any additional aircraft would be signed only for the time until Boeing hands over Vistara's new B787-9s. The airline is in no rush and wants to make sure that whatever aircraft it sources on an interim basis will be well-suited forto its network in terms of range, payload, and efficiency.
The Indian full-service carrier - a joint venture of Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines Group - ordered six aircraft of the type from Boeing but took only two prior to last year's suspension in deliveries caused by manufacturing issues. They are currently deployed from Delhi Int'l to Frankfurt Int'l, London Heathrow, and Paris CDG, the ch-aviation schedules module shows.
Kannan underlined that Vistara ias planning to expand its international long-haul market but cannot do so without additional B787s.
"We are looking at increasing frequency. Even for London, we feel like we could do more, we are charting out a plan, but again that is dependent on when we get the aircraft," Kannan said.
Vistara does not operate any other widebody aircraft. Its fleet comprises three A320-200s, thirty-eight A320-200Ns, five A321-200NXes, and five B737-800s. Kannan told ch-aviation recently that the A320ceo and the B737s would be retired over the next 12 months. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Vistara takes Dreamliner aircraft on lease to boost international ops
August 06, 2022
Vistara on Saturday said it has taken a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on lease, which will help the airline increase its number of flights to Frankfurt and Paris.
This is the first Dreamliner plane taken on lease by Vistara. The private carrier already has two Dreamliner aircraft, which were purchased from Boeing, in its fleet.
Vistara had to take the plane on lease because Boeing has not delivered four more Dreamliner planes to it for two years. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the US aviation regulator, wants Boeing to make rectifications in Dreamliner's production line before restarting the deliveries.
Vistara had ordered six Dreamliner planes in 2018 but has received only two from Boeing. The second plane was delivered in August 2020. Since then, it has been waiting for the other Dreamliners to come so as to boost its international flight operations.
In a press release, Vistara said it will be increasing its number of flights to Frankfurt in Germany and Paris in France as it "gears up to receive its third Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, which has been leased recently".
It is not clear when the plane will be delivered to the airline in India.
Meanwhile, Vistara said the additional flights to and from Frankfurt and Paris will start from October 30.
The private carrier will operate six weekly flights on the Delhi-Frankfurt route from October 30, instead of the three weekly services currently, it said.
The airline will operate five weekly flights on the Delhi-Paris route from October, instead of its two weekly flights currently. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Air India Express will add five B737-800s currently operated by Vistara. The full-service sister carrier, took nine Boeing widebodies after the collapse of Jet Airways, despite being hitherto an A320 Family operator.
Four of these aircraft have since been returned to the lessors, but the other five leases were extended by Tata Sons and will soon be transferred to Air India Express. Vistara will then no longer operate any B737s.

Tata Group announces Air India merger with Vistara; SIA to get 25% stake
November 29, 2022
In a major consolidation in the Indian aviation space, Tata group on Tuesday announced the merger of Vistara with Air India, and pursuant to the deal, Singapore Airlines will have a 25.1 per cent stake in Air India.
The proposed deal is expected to be complete by March 2024, subject to regulatory approvals.
Tata group owns a 51 per cent stake in Vistara and the rest is with Singapore Airlines (SIA).
In a release, SIA said Vistara and Air India would be merged, and it would also be investing Rs 2,058.5 crore in Air India as part of the transaction.
"This would give SIA a 25.1 per cent stake in an enlarged Air India group with a significant presence in all key market segments.
SIA said it intends to fully fund this investment with its internal cash resources, which stood at 17.5 billion Singapore dollars as of September 30.
In a separate release, Tata group said that with the consolidation, Air India would be the country's leading domestic and international carrier with a combined fleet of 218 aircraft, "making it India's largest international carrier and second largest domestic carrier".
SIA and Tata Sons have also agreed to participate in additional capital injections, if required, to fund the growth and operations of the enlarged Air India in FY2022-23 and FY2023-24.
"Based on SIA's 25.1 per cent stake post-completion, its share of any additional capital injection could be up to Rs 50,200 million (S$ 880 million, US$ 615 million), payable only after the completion of the merger," SIA said in the release. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/123916-indias-vistara-halts-new-aircraft-orders
Vistara halts new aircraft orders
26.01.2023
Vistara will accept aircraft already ordered but will not place any fresh orders ahead of its anticipated merger with Air India. CEO Vinod Kannan made the announcement in Delhi this week while also reporting the airline's first-ever quarterly profit.
In a January 24 media briefing, Kannan said despite the pause on aircraft orders, 17 pre-ordered planes will arrive at the airline between now and the end of calendar 2024, including one A321-200N, twelve A320-200Ns, and four B787-9s. The new aircraft will take Vistara's total fleet number from its present 53 to 70.
"We have not looked at any orders beyond that," Kannan said. "Once we have (merger) approval from the relevant authorities ... we will have to sit down together with Air India as a joint entity to see what we do." Kannan's comments come as the parent company of both airlines, Tata Sons, is close to finalising what is expected to be a massive aircraft order on Air India's behalf.
However, Kannan did say that along with pausing new aircraft orders, he was dropping short to medium-term plans to fly to the US. With Boeing aircraft delivery delays a contributing factor, the airline prefers to focus on its successful European flights. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Vistara takes first A321neo(LR)
07.02.2023
Vistara took delivery of its first A321-200NX(LR) on February 4, 2023, becoming the first operator of the type in India.
VT-TVG (msn 11138) was delivered directly from Hamburg Finkenwerder to Delhi International and joins the carrier's existing fleet of five A321-200NX and forty-two A320-200Ns.
Vistara also operates three B787-9s and three B737-800s, taken over from Jet Airways after its grounding as an interim solution and due to be retired as more A320neo Family jets arrive.
The airline's existing order book comprises a further four B787-9s and nine A320neo on firm order from the manufacturers, alongside additional A320neo and A321neo on orders from lessors. Chief Executive Vinnod Kannan told the PTI news agency that by mid-2024, the airline's A320neo Family fleet would grow to fifty-three A320neo and ten A321neo. Four of the latter will be LR variants, Vistara told ch-aviation.
The airline said it was planning to induct the aircraft into service "at the earliest". _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Air India drops Vistara
Vistara will be discontinued as a brand after its merger with Air India, as the name of the flag carrier is much more recognisable outside India, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson told the news agency Press Trust of India.
As Tata Sons works on turning what will be India’s only full-service carrier into a significant and more reputable international player, efforts will be made to retain some of “the Vistara heritage in that new manifestation,” Wilson promised.
Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan indicated in January that his carrier would not place any fresh orders ahead of the merger. Vistara and Air India then said last week that they had initiated the merger process, with a completion deadline set for March 2024, subject to regulatory approvals. AIX Connect (I5, Bangalore International), formerly AirAsia India, will be integrated with Air India Express (IX, Mumbai International), both of them now being Tata-owned budget carriers.
“One full-service and one low-cost airline will be included in the group, respectively. Air India and Vistara will amalgamate to create the full-service airline,” Wilson confirmed to the news agency. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.
