SpiceJet allowed to revert to full capacity

25.10.2022

SpiceJet (SG, Delhi Int'l) will be able to operate at full capacity from October 30, as India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has lifted its restrictions on the low-cost carrier, an official at the air safety watchdog confirmed to local media.

As previously reported, the directorate enforced a measure in July that halved the airline’s approved fleet, putting it under “enhanced surveillance” following a spate of air safety incidents and “degraded safety margins” during 2022. The restriction was initially for eight weeks, but in September the DGCA extended the period of the constraints until October 29.

SpiceJet has not issued a statement or commented on the development.

SpiceJet will now be able to operate, as the DGCA previously approved, up to 3,193 weekly departures in the winter schedules (October 30 to March 25), which is 6.6% more than what was approved for the winter season last year. The summertime control meant it could operate a maximum of 2,096 departures a week. Aviation insiders commented when the restriction was introduced that it in fact meant little as SpiceJet was already operating far fewer flights than the number the authority had approved.

According to the ch-aviation capacities module, SpiceJet has 2,003 frequencies scheduled for this week and 2,142 currently scheduled for the first week of December. Of the carrier’s total fleet of 77 aircraft, 46 are currently active, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows.

SpiceJet targets Italy for scheduled European debut

07.11.2022

SpiceJet is to commence scheduled passenger operations to Italy, its first destination in the European Union, with weekly roundtrip services between Amritsar - Milan Bergamo and Amritsar - Rome Fiumicino now showing as available on the airline's website. SpiceJet had formerly operated ad hoc charter flights to Italy.

SpiceJet's booking portal now shows weekly roundtrip services between Amritsar and Milan Bergamo as running on Saturdays throughout November before increasing to twice-weekly (Saturday and Tuesday) in December. The flights will be operated by a B737-8 and have a brief stop in Tbilisi, Georgia in both directions.

Similarly, SpiceJet will use a B737-8 on roundtrip services between Amritsar and Rome Fiumicino starting on November 11 before settling down to a Wednesday roundtrip service. These flights will also stop in Tbilisi in both directions. According to SpiceJet's schedules, the flights to Milan Bergamo and Rome Fiumicino will operate during daylight hours while the return sectors to India are overnight flights.

According to ch-aviation schedules data, only one other airline is operating passenger flights between Italy and India this month, with Neos Air operating a weekly B787-9 service between Milan Malpensa and Armistar. With the addition of the two Italian destinations, SpiceJet flies to 63 destinations across India, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.

SpiceJet gets creditor nod for SpiceXpress spin-off

22.11.2022

Creditor banks have indicated they will issue no-objection certificates and allow SpiceJet (SG, Delhi Int'l) to transfer all of its cargo and logistics operations to SpiceXpress and establish the cargo business as a separate entity. In August, SpiceJet foreshadowed the move, saying it would allow the cargo carrier to grow independently of the struggling parent airline.

SpiceXpress recently posted revenues of INR20.6 billion rupees (USD252.8 million) in the three months to September 30, 2022, and a net profit of INR2.12 billion (USD26 million) from transporting 27,675 tonnes of cargo. In contrast, SpiceJet reported a multi-billion quarterly net loss. In addition to utilizing belly hold space in its fleet of 78 passenger aircraft (of which the ch-aviation fleets advanced module reveals only 39 are active), SpiceJet also operates a fleet of three B737-700(BDSF)s and two (presently inactive) B737-800(BCF)s under the SpiceXpress brand.

Meanwhile, SpiceJet, which has spent much of 2022 fending off insolvency claims from disgruntled creditors and received USD122 million in emergency government funding as recently as October, is on the hunt for further capital. Last week, ch-aviation reported that the airline's board had approved the raising of an unspecified amount of fresh capital through the issue of eligible securities to qualified institutional buyers. ch-aviation has contacted SpiceJet for further details on this and their plans for SpiceXpress.

SpiceJet secures another wet-leased B737

22.02.2023

SpiceJet has wet leased another B737-800 from Corendon Airlines, with 9H-TJC ferrying in from Antalya on February 15 and commencing passenger operations for SpiceJet on February 17.

9H-TJC is the fourth B737-800 operated by Corendon Airlines or its Malta-based subsidiary, Corendon Airlines Europe, now at SpiceJet on an wet lease. FlightRadar24 ADS-B data shows the plane now operating six domestic sectors a day.

In addition to the B737-800s that Corendon has placed with SpiceJet, ch-aviation fleets advanced data shows that there are also five Corendon B737-8s operating on wet-leases at SpiceJet.

In 3Q 2022, ch-aviation reported that SpiceJet was among several India-based carriers looking to use ACMI capacity in 2023 to to help offset a shortage of aircraft. India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has recently loosened previously stringent rules around ACMI to allow local airlines to bring in additional capacity to meet passenger demand. Nonetheless, the maximum wet-lease period the DGCA is allowing SpiceJet is reported to be just six months. ch-aviation has contacted SpiceJet for further details and clarification.

SpiceJet also has 129 undelivered B737-8s on order with Boeing but is now experiencing problems firming up new delivery timelines after pausing them due to Covid-19. Aside from the Corendon ACMI aircraft, SpiceJet has not received any MAX aircraft since 2018. In addition to the B737-8s and B737-800s, SpiceJet also operates five B737-700s, one B737-700(BDSF), three B737-900(ER)s, and twenty-eight DHC-8-Q400s. The airline has no outstanding aircraft orders other than the MAX order.

How is Spicejet financing them. Last reports state that they were still struggling. It is a blessing in disguise that they could not take the Max8 due to the aircraft issues.

Lessor asks Indian DGCA to deregister two SpiceJet B737s

13.03.2023

Another lessor, Aircastle, has filed a request with India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to deregister two B737-800s leased to SpiceJet (SG, Delhi International), notifications on the authority’s website show. A spokesperson for the low-cost carrier told local media the move would not impact its operations.

The Irish wing of the Connecticut-headquartered lessor lodged the request to delist VT-SYA (msn 34799) on March 9, while Wilmington Trust SP Services (Dublin), a Wilmington Trust Corporation affiliate acting as trustee for the lessor, asked to delist VT-SZK (msn 41398) on March 6, according to the notifications.

Aircastle is the latest lessor to lodge an Irrevocable Deregistration and Export Request Authorisation (IDERA) with the civil aviation regulator seeking to remove B737s from SpiceJet’s fleet, following a spate of them last summer from Horizon Aviation, DAE Capital subsidiary AWAS, and Alterna Capital Partners.

An IDERA can be filed when talks over outstanding debts break down between an airline and a lessor. The process of deregistration is generally allowed after the aviation regulator checks whether the aircraft has any pending dues from tax authorities or airports.

According to the ch-aviation fleets ownership module, VT-SYA (currently in maintenance at Hyderabad International) and VT-SZK (active as of March 10) are both owned by Aircastle, the former via special purpose vehicle Klaatu Aircraft Leasing (Ireland) Ltd.

ch-aviation analysis of Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows that VT-SYA was diverted to Hyderabad during a flight from Delhi International to Bangalore International on November 12, 2022, where it remains, while VT-SZK has lately been deployed on a variety of domestic and international routes.

SpiceJet did not respond to ch-aviation’s requests for comment.

Two weeks ago, SpiceJet claimed to have agreed with another lessor, Carlyle Aviation Partners, to restructure a debt of over USD100 million into shares and debentures, giving it a 7.5% stake in the carrier.

Dont understand this ruling. Due to Covid many airlines suffered and employees too. Courts should not be involved in personnel decisions of private companies especially when their contracts expired. It is not directly Spice Jet's fault. This airline is limping along and may go under if it has to hire more employees. This will end up in Supreme Court.

https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/127635-indias-spicejet-aircraft-de-registration-requests-spike

SpiceJet aircraft de-registration requests spike

15.05.2023

Lessors have applied to India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to retrieve multiple SpiceJet (SG, Delhi International) aircraft according to the latest filings by the country's aviation regulator.

In the seven days to May 12, 2023, five different lessors have applied to have five aircraft de-registered and returned to them. This follows another lessor, Aircastle, filing an insolvency petition against the embattled airline earlier this month. On May 8, the aviation regulator listed three applications for de-registration.

Falgu Aviation Leasing Limited requested to de-register VT-MXJ (man 64509), a B737-8 usually based at Varanasi;
Sabarmati Aviation Leasing Limited requested to de-register VT-MXF (msn 64507), a B737-8 usually based at Chennai; and
Wilmington Trust SP Services Limited requested to de-register VT-SZJ (msn 41397), a B737-8 usually based at Delhi International.
On May 12, another lessor's special purpose vehicle, GY Aviation Lease 1723 Company Limited, requested to de-register VT-MXX (msn 60184), a B737-8 usually based at Kolkata, while GY Aviation Lease 1819 Company Limited requested to de-register VT-MXH (msn 60646), a B737-8 usually based at Varanasi.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, SpiceJet has 71 aircraft in its fleet, but only 34 of those are active. Recent ch-aviation reports have revealed that an ongoing series of legal challenges have muted plans to clean up the carrier's balance sheet through fresh capital raisings, reactivate aircraft, and expand the network,

On May 11, Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh went public, telling a market spooked by the recent Go First (G8, Mumbai International) insolvency that his airline would not be going down the same path. "There is absolutely no question of filing for insolvency," he said. "Any rumour regarding the same is baseless. We are focused firmly on reviving our grounded fleet and getting more and more planes back into the air. Work on this front has already began."

ch-aviation data indicates SpiceJet leases 52 aircraft, including five B737-700s, three B737-700(BDSF)s, thirteen B737-8s, fourteen B737-800s, three B737-900(ER)s, and fourteen DHC-8-Q400s. Lessors with aircraft at SpiceJet include Air Lease Corporation, Aviator Capital, Avolon, BOC Aviation, Carlyle Aviation Partners, CDB Aviation, Cross Ocean Partners, Falko Regional Aircraft, GECAS, Nordic Aviation Capital, Pacific AirFinance, Park Aerospace Holdings, SMBC Aviation Capital, and Spectre Air Capital.

Singh told media that SpiceJet maintains a good relationship with its creditors, saying aircraft lessors have supported the airline "through thick and thin and continue to do so."

SpiceJet to reactivate four aircraft by late 2Q23

26.05.2023

SpiceJet says it will return four aircraft to service by mid-June as part of its broader commitment to re-activate 25 parked planes. In a May 23 filing with the Mumbai Stock Exchange (BSE), SpiceJet said that it plans to resume operating two B737s and two DHC-8-Q400s by June 15, with more aircraft to follow.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, 33 of SpiceJet's 66 aircraft are currently parked. SpiceJet is maintaining services despite its financial challenges and lessor skittishness, with several attempting to de-register and re-possess aircraft, and another, Aircastle, trying to have the carrier declared insolvent.

ch-aviation data indicates three of SpiceJet's five B737-700s are inactive; two of the three B737-700(BDSF)s are inactive; ten of the thirteen B737-8s are inactive (two of the active B737-8s are wet-leased in from Corendon Airlines); nine of the fifteen B737-800s are inactive; one of the three B737-900ERs are inactive; and eight of the twenty-seven DHC-8-Q400s are inactive. The BSE filing did not identify the aircraft to be re-activated, or in the case of the B737s, the type.

In addition to re-activating aircraft, SpiceJet says it is relaunching and launching several routes, including two new international routes that will operate under the Indian government's UDAN scheme. Those routes are Agartala - Chittagong (Bangladesh) and Imphal - Mandalay International (Myanmar). The airline is also restarting three domestic routes and launching another three.

SpiceXpress to resume B737-800 freighter operations

15.08.2023

SpiceXpress is set to add its first B737-800(BDSF), marking the -800 freighter variant's return to service for the Indian cargo specialist after almost a year, Cargo Facts has reported.

An 18.9-year-old jet formerly operated by Virgin Australia and owned by World Star Aviation, N340WS (msn 34014) is completing P2F conversion at the Bedek Lingyun (Yichang) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering facility at Yichang.

SpiceXpress expects to take more B737-800(BDSF)s from World Star which currently has two more units under conversion at Yichang, according to the ch-aviation fleets ownership module.

The aircraft will be the first Israel Aerospace Industries B737-800 conversion to operate in India. During its previous -800 dealings, the SpiceJet (SG, Delhi International) subsidiary operated two B737-800(BCF)s which were retired in August and September 2022. Since then, SpiceXpress has focused on its fleet of three B737-700(BDSF)s, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows. Currently, only one of the trio is active, with the other two stored at Mumbai International since mid-February 2023 and at Delhi International since late May 2023. The only active freighter is based out of Kolkata and operates mainly to South-East Asia, Kathmandu, and Delhi International.

https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/132979-indias-spicejet-leases-b737s-a340-report

SpiceJet leases B737s, A340

17.10.2023

SpiceJet is midway through a program to lease ten B737s and an A340, with three of the narrowbody jets and the A340 already delivered, according to a CNBC-TV18 report.

Analysis of ch-aviation fleets advanced data lends some support to the report, with A340-300 YR-LRD (msn 835) ferrying to India in June and now operating on domestic and international sectors, including recent repatriation flights out of Tel Aviv Ben Gurion. The widebody's operator is Legend Airlines (Romania) (LAL, Bucharest Henri Coanda).

"Diwali [...], the Cricket World Cup, school vacations and office breaks will contribute to the increased demand," an anonymous SpiceJet source told the outlet. "To accommodate this surge in traffic, we have commenced the induction of ten leased aircraft B737s starting September 2023."

SpiceJet is also wet-leasing two B737-800s - from Corendon Airlines (XC, Antalya) and Corendon Airlines Europe (XR, Malta International).

The low-cost carrier has been plagued by operational and financial difficulties this year. However, in May, its chairman and managing director Ajay Singh said he would return 25 parked aircraft to service, plugging a capacity gap caused by the Go First insolvency. At the end of that month, SpiceJet said the first aircraft on the list would be a pair of B737s and two DHC-8-Q400s, with more to follow.

SpiceJet to wet-lease in two A340s for Hajj

20MAR2024

SpiceJet (SG, Delhi International) has announced it will wet-lease in two A340s for its 2024 Hajj charters, with the first one due to begin operating out of Srinagar and Guwahati on May 9.

The Indian low-cost carrier said that each of the quadjets would seat up to 324 passengers but did not disclose the identity of the operator. The ch-aviation fleets module shows there are currently no A340s on the market configured for exactly 324 passengers. SpiceJet did not respond to ch-aviation's request for comment.

Besides Srinagar and Guwahati, SpiceJet plans to also operate Hajj charters out of Gaya, Bhopal, Indore, Aurangabad, and Vijayawada.

Last year, the airline wet-leased two A340-300s from Legend Airlines (Romania) (LZ, Bucharest Henri Coanda) for its Hajj operations, configured for 257 to 263 passengers. SpiceJet pocketed INR3.4 billion rupees (USD40.6 million) in revenues from more than 200 Hajj flights, carrying over 21,000 pilgrims over the season.

SpiceJet does not serve Saudi Arabia on a scheduled basis and does not operate any in-house widebodies.
