United plans to introduce SFO-BLR (next spring) and ORD-DEL (this winter) services. The SFO-BLR will affect primarily AA's planned SEA-BLR service, which may be in doubt. Not sure to what extent but some 1 stop services on EK and LH could start seeing decreasing revenue, especially business and wealthier VFR travellers choose the non stop flights.

Also while BLR has good business traffic, but less VFR when compared to DEL, BOM or HYD (and about the same as MAA) and with this COVID virus, business travel will take longer to come back, so initially UA would have to offer competitive pricing on the flight.

ORD-DEL United service will be in direct competition to AI service, but the AI service continues to HYD, so both will coexist. United service will get connections from ORD hub, and AI service gets connections from AI's DEL hub, so dont think this will affect either service.

The only aircraft in United's fleet that can do SFO-BLR non-stop is the 789 and it will be a bit of a stretch even for this. The flight will either have to stop for fuel somewhere in Northern Europe or be quite severely load restricted.

Does UA have 789s in a premium-heavy configuration in its fleet?

In any case, UA will have a hard time beating LH's 748 product to BLR, and I doubt people will complain too much about the one hop in FRA.

I totally disagree with you. A nonstop is a nonstop. The vast majority of business people and even most tourists prefer nonstops. Look at UA’s EWR nonstops to India going out packed in J day after day (pre-COVID). I can assure you the average employee that is being sent to BLR to meet a local team for a week will get automatically booked on the UA nonstop (especially since UA is probably the preferred airline for most Bay Area large firms. As far as product, LH’s business class seats leave much to be desired. Not only are they 2-2-2 or 2-2 (upper deck) on many of their planes (while UA Polaris is 1-2-1), LH has that weird tilt inwards that put your feet right next to your neighbors. Sorry LH is not even near the top in J. That said, they are reliable, but UA will be just fine on nonstop flight reliability.

While I love that they are starting SFO-BLR, the 4am departure is brutal. Probably the worst time to leave. 1am or 6am are better - 1am you are so tired you fall asleep once seated and 6am you at least sleep a bit that night. I wonder how UA will handle meals. I always pass on dinner when leaving BOM at 2am and definitely not eating at 4am. But on a 17 hour flight, I would need multiple meals. Keeping to Indian time, I would need breakfast, lunch and dinner of the 17 hours.

6 am international departures are not much better either than 4 am. For 6 departure, one has to be in the airport by 4 am, leave their home/hotel in BLR around 3 am, unless they stay/live nearby, and get up by 2 am, at which time normally one is in deep sleep. Up to 2 am departures are ok.

United Premium Economy.

Recently had the opportunity to fly EWR to DEL on United Premium, fares were low, about 25% more than similar economy fare, but the trip was not worth not more than 25% than an experience in economy class.

Pros: Seat width - Elbow room, (this is only reason why premium eco exists), foot rest and noise cancelling headsets.

Cons: Recline (does not recline more than economy), IFE is terrible, limited English moves NO Hindi movies or programs, food is same as economy, restrooms shared with economy. United is far behind ME airlines, Euro airlines and Air India in food and IFE.
Food was not good either, had one hot meal, but the mid flight snack and the arriving light meal were served cold. Also the flight left late and arrived late for no particular reason. Not a single Hindi speaking FA (although not required, but would be nice if they had one).

I wanted to let everybody to know what to expect. Business class if you can afford is the only way to go. Frankly I am somewhat surprised at this experience, I am wondering if this is because of Covid restrictions or this is how United will be in the future ?

Thanks, this is most helpful. What would be your opinion about the best option for US-India / India-US in Premium Eco, since not many carriers offer it. I’ve tried LH and AF in the past. AF was good, LH not that great.

You may want to consider LO via Warsaw to Delhi once scheduled operations resume. Excellent Premium Economy on Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Why these bad timings where you are stuck in Delhi overnight for any connection to hyd, blr, maa or any place in india. so obviously you have to sell these for flights in economy at $600 per round trip to fill your seats.

They should move the flights by 3 hours starting from ORD at 3.25 pm to arrive in delhi by 5.10 pm to get connections to all of india. Again returns can be moved by 2 hours to start at 11.55 pm to arrive at 3.50 am to ORD so that people connect seamlessly and also good start times.

existing times

6:25 pm Chicago, IL, US (ORD)Arriving8:10 pm Delhi, IN (DEL)
1:55 am Delhi, IN (DEL)Arriving5:50 am Chicago, IL, US (ORD)

change times needed

3:25 pm Chicago, IL, US (ORD)Arriving 5:10 pm Delhi, IN (DEL)
11:55 pm Delhi, IN (DEL)Arriving 3:50 am Chicago, IL, US (ORD)

I flew on LH on premium economy not any better than UA. I had good experience on TK. May be UA will get better IFE in the future so the trip is more enjoyable.

Now US will require negative RT PCR tests for all incoming passengers worldwide which obviously will include all flights from India.

But unlike India where an Indian citizen or OCI holder can enter India even without a test and quarantine in India, it appears that there is no such option entering US.

So am I correct in my understanding that there is no testing at US airports, and that the test results have to be obtained and carried with you before you board the flight from India ?

Yes it does not appear that there is testing at major international airports in US. United and other carriers may have their own separate testing but that is generally for departing passengers and primarily to Hawaii.
