That's quite a long layover in LHR, and an even longer layover in DEL.
Where else are they planning to operate their two 789s? _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Vistara eyes direct US flights
24.11.2020
Vistara is evaluating options for non-stop flights between India and the United States, Chief Commercial Officer Vinod Kannan told Reuters.
The airline has seen an increase in demand for direct flights as passengers try to minimise connections in order to avoid unnecessary risk of exposure to COVID-19. Kannan said that he expects the trend to continue in the future, providing opportunities for non-stop services to new long-haul markets.
In addition, prevailing travel restrictions limit the number of airports where Indian citizens can connect.
However, Kannan added that potential flights to the United States would require new aircraft. While Vistara operates two B787-9s and has a further four on firm order from Boeing, these aircraft are configured for medium-haul services. Crucially, they lack crew rest areas. Kannan said that no decision has been taken yet about incremental widebody aircraft.
The Indian full-service carrier currently uses the two widebodies to operate trunk domestic routes in India, as well as services from Delhi Int'l to London Heathrow.
The US-India market is currently served by Air India (AI, Mumbai Int'l) (from Delhi to Chicago O'Hare, New York JFK, New York Newark, San Francisco, CA, and Washington Dulles, and from Mumbai Int'l to Newark) and United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare) (from Newark to Delhi and Mumbai). The routes are among the world's longest non-stop services - flights from the East Coast take around 14 hours, while services to the West Coast clock in at over 16 hours scheduled block time.
Vistara also has plans to expand its European network, add services to Japan, and resume and expand its South-East Asian operations once travel restrictions are lifted.

Vistara starts direct flights to Frankfurt

Apparently they will fly three days a week starting Feb 18.
Will they use a 789 or a A321Neo on the route? _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Believe me long term prospects of aviation don't look good to me. Hub-and-Spoke is still worse, though necessary at times.

Vistara seeks permission to commence India-US flights
APRIL 29, 2021
Vistara, the joint venture between Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, has sought a foreign air carrier permit to operate flights to the United States.
The full-service carrier Vistara has applied with the US Department of Transportation to operate flights to the US as soon as possible.
The airline is targeting September 1 as the launch date for its flights to the US using Boeing 787 jets. As of April 13, the airline had two Boeing 787-9s in its fleet, seating 299 passengers.
The airline is also expected to take six more deliveries of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft by 2021.
The US and India have signed an Open Skies agreement, and there is heavy traffic between the two countries. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

UK 084 Thursday Tokyo 17:50 Delhi 23:35
Neither the article nor Vistaras website seems to mention which airport in Tokyo. But in their destinations dropdown only HND is listed. |
Why are the airlines of India always choosing the most inconvenient times.
May be in this case this was only slot available, but it is only once a week, couldnt they try for a better slot. I guess they are only looking for O&D on this route with very few connecting traffic. |

Vistara to make Far East Asian debut in late 2Q21
13.05.2021
Vistara (UK, Delhi Int'l) has announced it will launch scheduled services between Delhi Int'l and Tokyo Haneda on June 16, 2021, benefitting from the travel bubble established between India and Japan.
"The Far East has been an extremely important geography for our global expansion from the beginning for its tremendous growth potential. We are delighted to add Japan to our international network, under the travel bubble," Chief Executive Leslie Thng said.
The Indian carrier, a 51/49 joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines Group, will initially ply the route weekly using its three-class B787-9s.
Tokyo will be Vistara's third long-haul destination after London Heathrow and Frankfurt Int'l and its first in the Far East. The airline's Asian international network currently comprises Dhaka, Kathmandu, Colombo Int'l, Doha Hamad Int'l, Dubai Int'l, and Sharjah.
The India-Japan market is currently served by ANA - All Nippon Airways, JAL - Japan Airlines (both of which connect Haneda to Delhi) and Air India (which flies from the Indian capital to Tokyo Narita), the ch-aviation schedules module shows. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Not sure if they can start by June 16. Currently only Japanese citizens and certain Japan residents can enter Japan and transits are not allowed, so the traffic will be limited to non existent. They will have to delay may be for at least 3 to 6 months until all Covid related restrictions are lifted. |

https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/106074-indias-vistara-defers-b787-a320neo-deliveries
Vistara defers B787, A320neo deliveries
26.07.2021
Vistara (UK, Delhi Int'l) is in the process of deferring the delivery of its outstanding Airbus and Boeing commitments, Chief Commercial Officer Vinod Kannan told Bloomberg News last week.
“We are spacing out our deliveries and pushing some to next year,” he said in an interview. “There have been commercial discussions to see how we can better match delivery stream to the projected demand.”
Although the carrier, a 51/49 joint venture between India's Tata Group and Singapore Airlines Group, has so far taken delivery of two B787-9s, it has delayed the arrival of its four remaining B787-9s by 12 to 15 months. According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, VT-TSH (msn 66528) is slated to arrive in April 2022, followed by VT-TSN (msn 66529) in June. After that, msn 66530 and 66531 will arrive in August and December 2022, respectively. Vistara owns all four.
Kannan highlighted, however, that given plans to expand further into the intercontinental market, Vistara may either re-equip its existing B787s with crew-rest areas or seek out from lessors, aircraft already equipped with them.
“The current aircraft aren’t equipped with crew bunks required for cabin crew and for pilots to have horizontal rest,” he said. “There are aircraft available if we want to lease them with these specifications already built in.”
Concerning the Europeans, with whom Vistara has twelve A320-200Ns directly outstanding alongside a further 15 due via lessors, Kannan said talks with Airbus and lessors were ongoing over a possible reduction in costs or adjustments of payment timetables. Vistara's existing fleet of thirty A320neo and three A321-200NXs are leased from third parties that include ALC Blarney Aircraft (one A320neo), Air Lease Corporation (one A320neo and three A321neo), Avolon (eight A320neo), BOC Aviation (eleven A320neo), and GECAS (eight A320neo). It is also expecting two A321-200Ns.
Given travel restrictions in place resulting from surging COVID numbers, Kannan said Vistara is operating at about 60% of its domestic pre-pandemic capacity. However, under India's special air bubble arrangements with over 27 countries, Vistara can serve Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Germany.
Plans to expand into the US market by September, however, are in limbo, with no firm commitments given as yet. _________________ 11000 posts (and counting) on Airliners-India.

Vistara gets thumbs-up for US flights
31.08.2021
Vistara has been granted a Foreign Air Carrier Permit (FACP) by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to operate scheduled and charter passenger and cargo services between India and the US.
The order, issued on August 24, becomes effective on the 61st day after its submission for a presidential review or the date of receipt of approval from the US President's office, whichever happens earlier.
As reported, Tata SIA Airlines Limited (TSAL) t/a Vistara – a 51/49 joint venture between India’s Tata Sons and the Singapore Airlines Group – on June 2 had received tentative approval from the DOT to its application for an exemption and an FACP. This followed its application on April 28 to launch commercial services to the US on September 1, 2021, using B787-9s, without disclosing any specific routes or destinations.
Chief Commercial Officer Vinod Kannan told Mint in June the airline planned to start direct long-haul flights to the US with B787-9s between October and December 2021.
The airline currently has two B787-9s in the fleet, according to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module. They are currently deployed on routes from its home base in Delhi Int'l to Bangalore Int'l and Chennai (India), and Frankfurt Int'l (Germany), London Heathrow (UK), and Tokyo Haneda (Japan), the ch-aviation PRO airlines module shows. Vistara has four more B787-9s, as well as twenty-seven A320-200Ns and two A321-200Ns on order with plans to expand its operations, especially on the international front.
The carrier flew to medium-haul international destinations such as Singapore Changi, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and the UAE before international flights from India were grounded in March 2020 following the outbreak of COVID-19.
According to the DOT order, Vistara now is authorised to conduct:
scheduled flights ferrying passengers, property, and mail from points behind India, via India, and intermediate stations, to a point/s in the US and beyond;
