Travel is affected and will be affected for the next few months and may be affected even in long term. Should'nt Indigo pause and stop ordering new aircraft, except as a replacement.

If the airline suffers severe losses later, it will ask for a taxpayer bailout or banks may have to accept a loss (same as a taxpayer bailout). May be GOI should caution all airlines to conserve cash and be more conservative in adding new flights especially to cities already served by other Indian carriers.

If the airlines in India need to be cautioned by the government on such a no brainer, I don't really know what to say!

Based on past experience (and 2 bankruptcies) Indian carriers have to cautious, I dont know what Indigo's plan is. Is to flood the Indian market with more and more aircraft, hoping that most other airlines go bankrupt. That will not be a good situation.

Agreed. If airlines get a bailout (which they should IMHO), they need to agree to pay of loans before leasing more aircraft. Also I would like to see some min fare rule if you take a bailout (but I know that is super controversial). Just feel like if you take govt money, to keep flying way below cost just to kick others off a route is just not good for the ecosystem at the moment. Maybe a 2 year rule limiting airlines that take money (which will be all of them). Similar to the US limiting stock buybacks for 2 years if you take the money

IndiGo Airlines seeks to phase-out A320-200s

05.06.2020

IndiGo Airlines (6E, Delhi Int'l) is planning to phase-out its 122 remaining A320-200s shortly, possibly accelerating their retirement, as it seeks to use the COVID-19 pandemic to push towards a more efficient, all neo narrowbody fleet.

"We see an opportunity here to make the fleet more efficient. Particularly with the old classic ceos, which incur maintenance costs, which you know have been a real problem for us all through the year. We're going to return them as rapidly as possible and therefore reduce our maintenance costs," Chief Executive Ronojoy Dutta said during the carrier's quarterly investor call.

According to the ch-aviation fleets ownership module, all of IndiGo Airlines' A320-200s are dry-leased. Dutta underlined that the LCC has relatively short-term lease contracts and was due to return most of the aircraft in the coming years anyway. In the case of high demand, it could evaluate extending the leases, but in the current downturn, this will surely not happen.

Dutta underlined that the airline will seek to avoid any confrontation with the lessors and will not push for early termination of leases, choosing instead to return the aircraft as scheduled. The airline has been retiring A320s over the past months, having phased out eight units since the end of March 2019.

"We will return them in their scheduled time, and if we have mutually agreed upon it, we may do it a little faster," he said.

For the time being, the airline will use the A320-200s only "when necessary" with the bulk of its reduced schedule flown on A320-200neo and A321-200neo narrowbodies.

Dutta added that IndiGo Airlines would not stop taking deliveries of new A320neo Family aircraft. The airline already operates 100 A320neo and thirteen A321neo, and has a further 230 and 383 units of the respective types on firm order from Airbus, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows. IndiGo Airlines also operates twenty-five ATR72-600s.

Airlines all over the world are still operating a large number of A320-CEOs and making money out of them. But once they come into the hands of an Indian operator they earn adjectives like 'expensive', 'high cost' and 'gas-guzzlers'.

IndiGo does little to zero major maintenance in India despite the size of its fleet. In the long term that would make costs spiral out of control. Yet, they don't invest in a major maintenance facility in India and choose to blame the aircraft. In addition to destroying the aviation industry in India, they are also negatively impacting the lease industry worldwide by dumping a large number of planes there.

Why such dimwits run airlines, and why the morons in the GoI do nothing about it is beyond me.

Indigo already has a MRO facility in Delhi and is building another MRO facility in India, it should be operational sometime this year in Bangalore. What is unclear is what kind of maintenance does the MRO do, only minor or major maintenance.

I sure hope that Indigo is doing the required maintenance per manufacturer (or lessor's) requirements. In the past Indigo did the major maintenance in Sri Lanka, they dont use or trust Air India's MRO facilities in India.

They probably do A and C checks, not the D check. One of the ideas behind this idiotic buy-sell-leaseback model is that the aircraft can be returned to the lessor when it falls due for a D-check.

In fact, I doubt they even do the C check.

https://simpleflying.com/indigo-staff-let-go/

Indigo announced that 10% of the staff will be laid off. There is no special unemployment insurance or pay from Govt unlike in US and EU. This is just the first installment. 10% lay off is the low end. At this rate, most airlines in India have to let go more than 30% of the staff.

IndiGo mulls wet-leasing of three A330s

22.07.2020

IndiGo is planning to venture into the widebody market, although initially only through a wet-lease contract for three A330 aircraft, The Economic Times has reported citing unnamed but "well informed" sources.

The Indian low-cost carrier mulled over launching own long-haul services in the past but ultimately decided against adding widebody aircraft to avoid complexity.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic created a new opportunity for the airline as many passengers will either prefer or for reasons related to border closures have to travel directly between India and key long-haul markets, as opposed to connecting via major hubs in the Middle East or South-East Asia.

The timeline for the launch of the wet-lease contract and the operating airline were not identified. IndiGo Airlines did not respond to ch-aviation's request for comment. The LCC would most likely target London as its first destination for the A330.

To date, IndiGo Airlines was adamant that its A321-200NX - of which it operates 18 and has a further 380 on firm order from Airbus - had sufficient range for its planned network.

The airline would be the second Indian LCC adding wet-leased widebody capacity in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic after SpiceJet, which is reportedly in talks with Oman Air about wet-leasing up to three of its A330s and plans to start using the aircraft for repatriation charters to London Heathrow already by the end of July 2020.

IndiGo Airlines mulls ways to raise funds

04.08.2020

The board of IndiGo Airlines parent InterGlobe Enterprises decided at a meeting on July 30 to "further deliberate on the matter relating to the raising of funds at a subsequent board meeting," it said in a stock exchange filing.

This followed an earlier resolution on July 24 to consider various ways to raise funds "through the issue of equity shares, and/or foreign currency convertible bonds, and/or non-convertible debentures, and/or any other eligible instruments or securities."

The announcement to further deliberate the issue came as the company posted its highest ever quarterly net loss, INR28.44 billion rupees (USD378 million), covering the first quarter of the 2020-21 financial year. It recorded a profit of INR12.03 billion (USD160 million) for the same period last year.

It currently has a total cash balance of INR184.5 billion (USD2.45 billion), comprising INR75.28 billion (USD1 billion) in free cash and INR109.22 billion (USD1.45 billion) in restricted cash, it said in a statement on July 30.

The previous day, the Indian low-cost carrier said it planned to raise at least INR20 billion (USD266 million) through the sale and leaseback of aircraft and other assets.

"Managing cash continues to remain our primary focus and we continue to work with all our stakeholders to raise liquidity," chief financial officer Aditya Pande said during a conference call to discuss the quarterly results.

The company is in advanced talks on selling and leasing back some of its unencumbered assets, he added.

IndiGo Airlines currently operates a fleet of 115 A320-200s, 108 A320-200Ns, nineteen A321-200NXs, and twenty-five ATR72-600s, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows. It temporarily halted operations in March and has slowly been rebuilding its schedules, but it said last week that it would cut 10% of its workforce.

Are they still flying to Istanbul??

I wonder what the future of this flight is, with Turkey and India not being the best of friends at the moment?

From Oct 1st, the flights to IST are in the schedules. So they are still flying, but long term future looks doubtful. At risk is the code share to other cities in India on Indigo by TK, which is what TK wants.

TK does have interline agreement with fellow star partner, AI, but I have rarely seen any revenue flights on the TK/AI schedules.

IndiGo to charge ₹100 for check-in at airport counters

OCTOBER 17, 2020

IndiGo will charge a passenger ₹100 service fee if he or she wants to check-in at the airport counters from Saturday onwards, the airline said in a statement.

The aviation ministry had in May made it mandatory for passengers to do web check-in so as to reduce touch points at the airport amid the coronavirus pandemic. Once web check-in is done, the online boarding pass is issued by the airline to the passenger.

“IndiGo has introduced a service fee of INR 100 for check-in at the airport counters effective October 17, 2020,” said the statement.

“We encourage all passengers to web check-in as per the Government directive, using our website or mobile app. The check-in fee at the airport counters is applicable on all bookings made, starting from today i.e. October 17, 2020,” it noted.

Any idea what's becoming of these withdrawn IndiGo A320s?

Heard that at least a few are being flown to Kemble directly for scrapping.

A lot of the leased ones are being re-deployed by the lessors to other carriers.
