Vistara is expecting to take delivery of its first two widebody aircraft, B787-9s, in February and March 2020, and plans to deploy them to London as one of the first destinations, Chief Executive Leslie Thng told the Indian media.

"First, two B787-9s [will] be delivered in February, March… We have plans to use [the] B787-9 on long-haul. London is one destination we are keen on. We are planning and we will announce when we are ready,” Thng said.

Vistara explores options to gain London slots

13.01.2020

Vistara is in talks with a number of airlines holding slots at London Heathrow airport regarding a potential lease, sources told Indian CNBC TV18.

"However, since slots at such a busy airport are a scarce commodity, we are talking to several carriers to take slots on lease. Simultaneously, we are also looking at London Stansted but we are trying to get Heathrow," an unnamed source said.

The Indian carrier, a joint venture of Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines Group, is expecting to take its first four B787-9s in 2020, allowing it to launch long-haul operations. The deliveries of the first two units are tentatively scheduled for February and March 2020. It has six B787-9s on firm order from Boeing but expects to add additional units from lessors, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows.

Besides London, Vistara will target other destinations in Europe and in the Far East in the first phase of its long-haul expansion. Going forward, it also plans to add services to Australia and North America.

At this point if AI leases one of their LHR slots to Vistara, I guess they would make more money than flying to LHR. Razz

Vistara begins leased 737-800 phase-out as A320neo arrive

15.01.2020

Vistara is returning two of its leased B737-800s this month, which it had acquired following the demise of Jet Airways last April, as a result of a fresh batch of A320-200neo being delivered to the airline, according to a report by the Press Trust of India.

The remaining seven of the nine B737-800s it is leasing will remain with the carrier until 2022-23. The aircraft were brought into the Vistara fleet when the Indian government temporarily reallocated hundreds of Jet Airways slots to Air India, IndiGo Airlines, SpiceJet, GoAir and AirAsia India, as well as Vistara, in order to fill the capacity void.

The airline already has 19 A320neo in its fleet, with further units expected to enter service with the carrier in the coming weeks, and replacing the returning B737-800s. Vistara is part-way through it order for 50 A320neo and A321neo, with deliveries to be complete by 2023. The carrier has also ordered eight B787-9s for its planned long-haul operations.

Vistara to add single-class narrowbodies in future

24.01.2020

Vistara will configure some of the narrowbody aircraft it is due to take over the next three years in a single-class, all-economy layout, Chief Executive Leslie Thng told India's PTI news agency.

"We have factored in the operational challenges that may arise from having different fleets and are confident of successfully steering through them," he said.

A joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines Group, the full-service airline currently operates most of its aircraft in a three-class layout with business, economy premium, and economy classes. According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, all thirteen of its A320-200s are equipped with eight business class seats, 24 economy premium seats, and 132 economy seats. Eighteen out of nineteen A320-200neo have the same configuration, while eight B737-800s taken over from Jet Airways (9W, Mumbai Int'l) have 12 business class seats and 156 economy class seats. The only aircraft outfitted with an all-economy layout is A320neo VT-TNN (msn 7560), which is deployed by the airline from Delhi Int'l to Ranchi and Udaipur.

Thng did not name any specific routes on which the future all-economy class aircraft would be used other than saying that these will be either thinner, year-round routes or seasonal leisure services. He also did not specify how many the airline will take.

"It is important to note that the three-class cabin configuration is one of Vistara's strongest USPs and we have every intention of offering it on as many routes as possible. We are not going to operate our all-economy aircraft under a sub-brand with a different business model," Thng added.

Vistara has a further thirteen A320neo on firm order from Airbus but expects to take more aircraft from lessors, including its first A321-200neo. The incoming A320neo Family jets will replace the ex-Jet Airways B737-800s.

Vistara mulls more aircraft to expand to Europe, US

28.01.2020

Vistara is planning to add more B787s to expand into Europe and the United States as its parent Singapore Airlines Group looks to exert more competitive pressure on the Gulf carriers, Bloomberg has reported.

The Indian full-service carrier, a 51/49 joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines Group, is still in the early stages of planning its proposed acquisition, sources close to developments told the news wire. The exact size of the potential order will, however, be predicated on, among others, the airline's ability to acquire slots at London Heathrow, they said.

Vistara currently has six B787-9s on firm order from Boeing but expects to take additional units from lessors, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows. The first two B787s are scheduled to deliver in February and March 2020. The airline has yet to confirm their initial routes but it is understood that it is studying various options for serving London as a matter of priority.

However, sources told Bloomberg that the aircraft would not be suitable for flights to the United States due to the lack of a crew rest area.

Vistara is also evaluating adding more A320neo Family aircraft, including A321-200neo(XLR)s. The carrier currently operates thirteen A320-200s, nineteen A320-200neo, and eight B737-800s taken over from Jet Airways. The B737-800s are being retired as the A320neo deliveries progress. Vistara is due to take its first A321neo shortly.

Don't think Vistara will start any new international route right now, with the coronavirus scare going on everywhere.

The 787 will probably keep doing DEL-BOM and DEL-BLR shuttles for a while.

Agreed unless they get lucky and pick up a LHR slot that an airline had to give up (meaning an airline closes). Unless the UK and USA have big outbreaks like Italy, I think Indian tourists with visas will flock to the UK US for vacation (not everyone will just sit at home). Asia is basically out and even Dubai, with so many foreign workers, seems risky (I think one Kerelite got he virus in the UAE)

Many UK and US based mutinationals (including the one I work for) have issued severe restrictions on international travel until further notice. The fear is more about employees getting quarantined for extended periods, either abroad or upon returning home.

Vistara may get lucky as some airline may want to reduce its LHR frequency and offload the slot for a very reasonable price.

Also while Indians may not want to sit at home, the numbers who will vacation will be reduced leading to cutbacks and losses for airlines operating the US and UK routes.

Vistara crew to wear face masks, gloves

Apr 30, 2020

Vistara will temporarily stop services like onboard sales, welcome drink, hot meals and beverages in premium and economy cabins, Starbucks coffee and Turkish towels on its domestic flights when the same are allowed to resume by the government.

In wake of the corona pandemic, the full service airline will also reduce meal choices and give 200-ml water bottles to passengers. The airline reiterated these are “temporary changes … to ensure health and safety of passengers and staff upon resumption of services, when allowed by the authorities.”

The airline will minimise touchpoints of human contact on board by up to 80%. “Water-pouring will be replaced with distribution of 200ml sealed water bottles on all flights, and cold refreshments will be served to customers in premium economy and economy cabins, including to customers opting for economy lite fares.”

Services on international flights will also be reviewed accordingly to curtail contact with customers.

“Vistara's cabin crew are receiving appropriate training on minimising their chances of contracting or spreading the coronavirus. They will undergo thermal screenings before departure and arrival of flights, and will be quarantined/tested if any colleagues or passengers show symptoms of infection or test positive for COVID-19. The cabin crew will wear personal protective equipment such as face masks and disposable gloves at all times,” the airline said.

Vistara will implement social distancing across all passenger touchpoints and encourage the usage of self-service facilities such as web check-in and airport check-in kiosks. It will equip all its aircraft with surgical masks, gloves, sanitiser wipes and contact-less infrared thermometers. The airline will also ensure a precautionary check-up with the airport medical support team for any passenger showing symptoms of COVID-19.

Vistara looks to trim fleet, defer deliveries

18.06.2020

Vistara is planning to return at least seven narrowbody aircraft, including one of its ex-Jet Airways B737-800s and around six A320-200s by the end of 2020, and hopes to defer deliveries of some of its forthcoming aircraft, Chief Commercial Officer Vinod Kannan told LiveMint.

The full-service carrier added seven B737s when the collapse of Jet Airways in 2019 presented it with an opportunity to quickly grow capacity at a low cost. However, in the current market situation, the airline is looking to simplify and trim its fleet. As such, VT-TGI (msn 39401) was retired from active service on May 28, 2020, and subsequently returned to GECAS and ferried to Tainan on June 17, 2020, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows.

According to the ch-aviation fleets ownership module, the remaining six B737-800s operated by Vistara are owned by BOC Aviation (four) and FLY Leasing (two).

The airline plans to return around six of its thirteen A320-200s by the end of 2020. All 13 aircraft are dry-leased. The airline's narrowbody fleet also includes twenty A320-200neo.

Kannan said that Vistara was in talks with both Airbus and Boeing about the future deliveries of A320neo (of which it has 13 on direct order) and B787-9s (five, on top of one already delivered). Vistara also has orders for aircraft from lessors, including A321-200neo and further B787-9s. Vistara confirmed that it still intends to take its second B787-9 by the end of this month.

Vistara - Air AsiaIndia possible code sharing or alliance.

If Tata does not want to get out of Air Asia India, then they should seriously look at a code share and alliance arrangement with each other, since Tatas own the majority portion of both airlines. Air Asia India can provide good domestic connections at a lower cost and Air Asia and can tap into Vistara's international network. For Air Asia this is the best bet to get international traffic later, if they can sort out the issues they are having with GoI.

Recently in Brazil, LATAM and Azul have announced code sharing and alliance. In this difficult environment this may be best option.

Vistara is evaluating options regarding the deferral of some of its aircraft on order but still sees a chance to launch its long-awaited London operations by the end of 2020, Chief Commercial Officer Vinod Kannan said during an online media conference.

"I believe in the third or fourth quarter [for the launch long-haul international flights] but the decision will be a function of bilateral bubbles. It will also be a function of when countries re-open, which has been a moving target," Kannan said.

The airline previously planned to launch services to London Gatwick as early as March 2020 using its newly-delivered B787-9s. These plans were put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Vistara's other prospective long-haul destination is Tokyo.

Indian airlines are banned from operating international flights until at least July 31, 2020, due to border restrictions related to the pandemic. Kannan underlined that "normalcy" would not return immediately even if the ban is lifted at the end of this month.

He underlined that despite the tough environment and low demand, which has translated to around a third of Vistara's aircraft being used, the airline does not plan to completely pause all deliveries. It will definitely take at least one more B787-9 and two A320neo Family narrowbodies. According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, Vistara's current fleet consists of thirteen A320-200s, twenty A320-200Ns, six B737-800s, and one B787-9. The airline's only widebody, delivered in late February 2020, has so far been used exclusively on domestic sectors.

Vistara, SpiceJet gear up for London operations

05.08.2020

Benefitting from a recently formed travel bubble agreement between India and the United Kindom which permits limited direct scheduled flights, Vistara and SpiceJet are planning to launch services to London in the coming weeks.

According to Business Standard, the former is planning to launch services from Delhi Int'l to London Gatwick in mid-August. It intends to operate them with B787-9s. It took delivery of its first widebody shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down international traffic and has yet to deploy the unit beyond the domestic market. Vistara, SpiceJet gear up for London operations

Vistara plans to take a second B787-9 later this month. Vistara plans to add long-haul B787-9 flights to Frankfurt Int'l and Paris going forward, although the timeline has not been revealed.

Vistara to launch inc'l ops in mid-3Q20

21.08.2020

Vistara has announced that it will launch its maiden intercontinental route, between Delhi Int'l and London Heathrow, on August 28, 2020, initially operating 3x weekly.

The full-service carrier, a 51/49 joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines Group, has so far scheduled the route through September 30, 2020. The flights to the UK will mark the maiden deployment of Vistara's B787-9s on long-haul routes. The carrier took delivery of its first widebody aircraft, VT-TSD (msn 66526), in late February this year, shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to suspend all international operations. As such, VT-TSD has only been deployed on trunk domestic routes. Vistara's second B787-9 was delivered in mid-August 2020.

The launch of the route was made possible by an "travel bubble" agreement between India and the United Kingdom, permitting international travel between the two countries for selected groups of passengers, mostly Indian citizens and residents. Leisure travel to India is still banned.

Vistara has confirmed it is planning to launch services to Paris CDG and Frankfurt Int'l in the near future. India also has "travel bubble" agreements with both France and Germany.
