Hello All.
I will be travelling from KTM-DEL-SFO on Air India via T3. Wanted to know if I will be allowed to step out into delhi as I have a 10 hr layover. any thoughts?
I was also considering booking another airline (vistara) from KTM-DEL and then going on AI to SFO to cut down my layover time. How would the transit work in this case in T3? I would have to clear customs, pick up my luggage and then hand it to AI? Would I be allowed to leave the airport? |

Sanhin, You need to give some info on your passport/Indian Visa status for us to answer your question |

I am a Canadian passport holder without OCI/Indian Visa. But I can get an E-Visa if I will be indeed allowed to leave the airport. |

I have a similar question - I will be flying in from Madrid and then flying out on the evening COK/TRV flight (AI47?) Since the wait is long, I might want to wander out. From what I have read, AI can either checkin the bags the whole way (I assume I wont be allowed to leave the terminal in this case?) or have the bags tagged to be checkout in DEL? If I take the latter option, when can I recheck the bags back?
Or is the bags vs going out un related?
(I am assuming that the customs procedures and the immigration procedures have to be somehow linked?) |

To step out during the 10hr layover you will have to get an e-visa. Barring a tedious online application, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Same for Vistara, since it is two different tickets you will have to enter India (with the visa), and re-check in at DEL T3 for AI. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/c/JishnuBasu777 |

AI47 is an international connection. So I'm guessing you complete customs/immigration procedures at your final destination. Baggage will be checked all the way. You won't be able to leave DEL T3 at this time. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/c/JishnuBasu777 |

is there a way for the AI staff at Madrid to do the process as if AI47 wasnt a international connector, let me do immigration/customs at DEL and then fly like a domestic passenger on AI 47 - was my qn.. I would rather do the formalities in DEL at 8 AM than in TRV at 11:00 PM.. |

I think you can request the check-in staff at MAD to tag your bags till DEL only. You can complete customs in DEL and return back later in the day for AI47 as a domestic passenger. |

The customs and immigration formalities have to be fulfilled in the first port of entry in India, which is Delhi in your case. You will be a domestic passenger in your DEL-TRV leg. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

A quick Google search yielded this, from the Air India website
Quote: | Arriving in India
When you arrive into India and have an onward connection to another station within India.....
On a flight that has the number in the range of AI010 – AI399 or AI900 to AI999
At the Departure station you would be issued with two Boarding Passes one till the Gateway Point and the second from Gateway Point to Interior Point (final Destination) with "T” Indicator printed on it.
Your baggage would also be tagged to the final destination.
At the Gateway Point, you may proceed directly to departure gate at least 45 minutes prior to departure and need not pass through immigration and Customs.
You may collect your baggage and complete Customs and Immigration Check formalities at the final destination.
Should you require any further assistance, please feel free to contact Air India Transfer/Check-in Desk |
However, in your case you could request baggage to be tagged till DEL, complete immigration & customs there, and then re-check your bags as a domestic passenger. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/c/JishnuBasu777 |

Incorrect info. If you are connecting on Air India's international connector flights from DEL to say BLR/TRV/MAA - your immigration and customs will not happen in DEL, it will happen at your final destination. |

Thanks. Does it happen this way in BOM as well?
If I recall correctly, the domestic gates in BOM T2 are a bit removed from the international gates and one has to go through immigration to be able to reach them. _________________ I don't know which is the more pampered bunch : AI's widebodies (the aunties) or Jet's widebodies (the planes).

Only for international connectors which depart from to domestic destinations from the international section itself.
AI has this confusing mechanism - this is valid only if the flight numbers are
in the range of AI010 – AI399 or AI900 to AI999 and your connecting boarding pass has a big "T" printed on it.
On these flights, even as a domestic passenger, you have to head to the international section.
For all other AI flights, u clear immigration and customs, check in again at domestic and go tot he domestic gates.[/b] |

Bala,
There is a bit more of this in the discussion above, but what I am planning to do is to request NOT to have a T printed on the boarding card in Madrid, if that is possible |

You can check in only upto DEL, collect ur bags and clear immigration. You can check in again at DEL, this time you will get a boarding pass with a D stamped on it for the same flight. You will hv to head to the international section to board. |
