Mumbai to Durgapur flight services start under UDAN scheme

Sir, I am not as sure as you are, since AI has been forced to fly this route, and SG is doing this only under UDAN. The demand and the yields need to pick up, to make things viable. Right now, RDP having a non-UDAN conection only to DEL should be an indicator. The CCU-RDP flight failed miserably in the first avatar of RDP connectivity, even with an AT-4 failing to get numbers, forget yields.
On the other hand, I look forward to flying to RDP: I have one trip in early July. This will be my first trip to RDP. I may have another one soon. I will also talk to people around, to know first-hand, if things have changed on the ground.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Sumantra, thanks for your comments. Next time you visit Durgapur airport could you please post some pictures.
Regarding lack of CCU-LHR flight, I think we have serious differences of opinion and we have to live with that. I have no faith in Air India internal studies, market analysis, yearly statistics and MCA news releases!

How Calcutta won a Dubai flight but lost a London one.
The new route sounds suspiciously like a consolation prize.

https://www.telegraphindia.com/states/west-bengal/how-calcutta-won-a-dubai-flight-but-lost-a-london-one/cid/1693185?ref=west-bengal-recommended-stry-4

But the Centre decided to give the route to Bangalore and it was launched in November last year, which the sources have attributed to political reasons.

Mamata had personally requested Jet Airways, which has now ceased to operate, to start a direct flight to Europe. The airline had turned down the request, saying Calcutta was a low-yield market and the flight would not be viable.

After Air India pulled out its direct London flight in 2008, British Airways and Lufthansa had followed suit, snapping Calcutta’s direct air links with Europe.

The article sums up the arguments against a direct non stop flight from CCU to London. Jet airways turned it down as CCU was a low yield market. BA and other carriers pulled out after AI did.

The only viable option is for BA to introduce a flight with numerous connection possibilities to many destinations and BA might still do it as it has recently started service to Islamabad.

AI introduced a flight from BLR because it is a high yield market and BA was making a killing on this route. BLR already has 4 European carriers, BA, LH, AF and KL and is much more viable than MAA, HYD also.

I will, Sir. In fact, I am quite curious to get some circumstantial evidence of how the flight, and RDP itself is doing.

Sir, I think you have serious difference of opinion with not just me, it is with everyone else not just on this forum, but airline industry insiders as well, across the globe, who seem echo just one pertinent fact in unison: CCU is not yet worth the effort. Of course, you can choose not to have any faith in not just Air India's, but any airline's internal studies, market analysis, yearly statistics and news releases, be it Indigo, British Airways, Lufthansa, or KLM. All these airlines are in a far more respectable economic condition as compared to Air India. and as an Indian taxpayer, I am really happy if less of taxpayers' money goes does the Air India drain.
Cheers, Sumantra.

As you all know CCU is now served by good number of flights from ME3 airlines. My information is good number of these passengers are for EU and north America. Why AI cannot serve these group of passengers? Does GOI counting on ME3 airlines for CCU bound passengers? Who created such a crazy policy? This requires political authorization and not back door business manipulation. AI is sure to find good number of business class passengers among these group of people to make their flight commercially viable. All you need sincerity and less arrogance! Remember NRI from Kolkata are contributing much to mother INDIA and they should not be marginalized by Air India for any reason. After all CCU is a part of desi air/space!

Sir, I do not see why you are missing the point. You may point fingers at AI, but surely, the people in charge at Indigo, British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa know their onions quite well. The ME3 are a different kettle of fish. Forget foreign airlines. Take Indigo: they rule the roost at CCU in the domestic market. Yet, they are not looking at any long-haul out of CCU. Sir, I think all of us have put our logic forward. Forget conspiracy theories, partiality, the quintessential oppressed mentality. There is sound logic here, which you do not like to believe. I will stop here.

DEL-RDP-DEL flights. Tomorrow (that is, in a few hours from now), I will take:
04 Jul (Thu) AI 755: [05:50 am - 07:50 am]
and return the next day, on:
05 Jul (Fri) AI 765: [08:25 am - 10:35 am]
I booked my tickets on the Web Special (Economy) fares classes T and L, respectively, for Rs.3574 and Rs.4834, respectively.
What is still available for booking: the web special fares:
AI 755: Rs.5219 and AI 756: Rs.7119, classes S and L.
That does not give me a nice feeling about yields on this flight being good.
I get the distinct feeling that unless covered under UDAN or the state picks up a tab on the cost, any airline will struggle on this route. LEt me see what circumstantial evidence I see tomorrow, and the day after.
All said and done, I am eager to see the KNI airport at RDP: arrival tomorrow, and departure, the day after.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Samir-da: I will share photographs and some notes. It is a bare-minimum airport, geared for low-cost efficient operations. The maintenance is not quite up to the mark. The infrastructure around hasn't attracted the investors as originally envisaged: there is hardly any Aerotropolis to talk of. The roads around the place are not in good shape: this changes drastically when one crosses the border and enters Jharkhand! The difference is quite stark.
Cheers, Sumantra.

Direct connectivity with Hanoi is good news but I wonder why not Ho Chi Minh City which is more westernized with larger Buddhist population and closer to CCU.I hope in course of time CCU will be connected with Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia and S.Korea/Japan.

Sir: I beat you to this news post, please see above Razz
Please see our Ameya Sir's nice analysis. Hanoi is better from a business connection point of view. 6E with its lower cost structure will be able to do much better in the market compared to any other Indian airline at this moment. 6E is leveraging traffic, utilising its leading presence at CCU, and harnessing its cost structure well. At the moment, it one Indian airline can make this route work, it has to be Indigo.
Cheers, Sumantra.

As airlines fight to claim ownership of the "world's longest flight operator" title, Emirates is heading the opposite route in the distance stakes.
The Dubai-based airline has just announced plans to launch the world's shortest flight on the world's biggest commercial plane -- the double-decker Airbus A380.
Two daily A380 flights between Dubai and Muscat International Airport are scheduled to take to the skies on July 1.
The distance between the two cities is just 340 kilometers (211 miles). Fun fact: That's shorter than the length of all the wiring in the A380, which, according to plane manufacturer Airbus, would stretch over 500 kilometers if laid out end to end. https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/news/emirates-to-launch-worlds-shortest-a380-flight/ar-AACaTar

Why the IAF’s triumph is so very important.

Pakistan impact on Calcutta airport: planes diverted, revenues hit.
After Pakistan shut airspace, Europe-bound overflying flights are forced to change route. Across the world, airports are trying to increase their earnings from commercial operations. However, in 2017-18, the Calcutta airport had earned Rs 965.35 from aeronautical services, compared with Rs 265.08 crore from commercial operations, an official said.

Air India no longer serves Shillong. Only Indigo AT7-6 daily flight, from/to Calcutta. I have a second Durgapur KNI airport (RDP) visit in a week's time. Damn...I need to upload pictures from my earlier trip...I hope I get some time to write on this.

Flyers irked over local SIM clause to use free Wi-Fi at Kolkata airport.
Kolkata: The city airport’s social media pages have been flooded with complaints from passengers, especially international flyers without a local mobile number, about the difficulty in accessing the free Wi-Fi at the terminal.
As in all airports in the country, the password for the free Wi-Fi is sent as a one-time password to a local mobile number that needs to be put in during the online registration at the airport. For international passengers who do not have a local number, the OTP needs to be collected from a help desk on production of passport and tickets. However, in Kolkata, passengers rue there is neither proper signage nor an official to guide them to help desks.

The blaze was extinguished, but not before an Indian Navy lieutenant commander, who led the firefighting effort, was overcome by fumes and later died in hospital, according to Indian media. He had gotten married just a month earlier. India’s only aircraft carrier suffered a fire that left one sailor dead. And China, which is India’s rival, says this is because Indians aren’t competent enough to operate advanced military equipment.

Window of surge between Durga Puja slump and sluggish Christmas bookings.

Calcutta. https://www.telegraphindia.com/states/west-bengal/diwali-rush-home-drives-air-fares/cid/1714291?ref=calcutta_home-template
Air fares to Calcutta are soaring this Diwali after a slump during Durga Puja.
Last-minute fares for flights to Calcutta from Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore surged four to five times on Friday and Saturday as tens of thousands of people working outside are returning home for the festival of lights.
Travel portals showed on Friday evening that the one-way fare from Bangalore to Calcutta for a late night flight on Friday was around Rs 39,000.
The average one-way fare in the sector varies between Rs 4,000 and Rs 5,000. (more)

Sir: you may have noticed the announcement of discontinuation of the Calcutta-Hong Kong Indigo flight. Unfortunately, even the UDAN Pakyong (Sikkim) flight continues to be suspended. While one may temporarily blame other causes (unrest in Hong Kong, weather in Pakyong), the airlines concerned (Indigo and SpiceJet) are not finding it an attractive economic proposition to operate these flights. Unfortunate, but true.
Cheers,

Russia fires nuclear-capable missile from North Pole. https://www.forbes.com/sites/hisutton/2019/08/25/russia-fires-nuclear-capable-missile-from-north-pole/#740c734f15a9
Early on Saturday morning the peace and tranquility of the Arctic, hundreds of miles from the nearest signs of human activity, was shattered. A Russian submarine punched through the ice near the North Pole and fired a Sineva type intercontinental ballistic missile. Meanwhile, around 1,000 miles further south, yet still within the Arctic Circle, another Russian submarine launched a Bulava type intercontinental ballistic missile from beneath the surface of the Barents Sea. The timing and location of these tests may be intended to send messages both internally and to the rest of the world.

Comments: Agni-2 to Agni 5 were not developed for Paki threat. Those missiles were primary China specific. In future if some crazy middle Eastern countries becomes too hostile to India and directly help Pak in a short but high intensity war they could also be used. I suppose most Agni missiles are spread all across the country under a centralized command. But Prithvi mark 2 are short range and rapid reaction missiles probably only under army control. These missiles have very short reaction time as 2-3 minutes.

Over the next few days, a bunch of Su-30 MKI and Hawk 132 combat aircraft will take-off and touch down at Dimapur in Nagaland, Imphal in Manipur, Guwahati, Kolkata, Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh and Andal in West Bengal.
The first phase of the exercise, which began on Wednesday will conclude on Saturday whereas the second phase will be conducted between October 29 and November 1. Guwahati, Imphal, Dimapur and Kolkata will be covered in the first phase while Andal and Dimapur will come under the second phase.

Will IAF Rafale fighter jets give it air superiority over PAF?
https://timesofislamabad.com/04-Mar-2019/will-iaf-rafale-fighter-jets-give-it-air-superiority-over-paf
PAK viewpoint: While it is not a full-fledged stealth aircraft, it offers reduced visibility in the air due to many changes to the aircraft's external parts like the fuselage, tail-fin, engine air in-lets and many more.
The Rafale also houses a glass cockpit with a central computer, which selects and prioritises information to be displayed for the pilot. It is a highly-digitized cockpit, and even allows control over a wide range of the plane's functions via spoken voice commands.
Rafale aircraft is fitted with RBE2 AA active electronically scanned array (AESA), which reportedly delivers a detection range of 200 kilometres. In terms of the engine, Rafale aircraft houses two Snecma M88 engines, each of which is very powerful when it comes to providing thrust.
It has a maximum speed of 1,912 km/hr or 1,032 knots while flying high-altitude and 1,390 km/hr in low-altitude flights.
The standard setup includes a single 30 mm GIAT 30/M791 auto cannon with 125 deadly rounds. It also has at least 14 hardpoints (only air force version) for fitting weapons and external fuel tank. It is believed to be adept in both air-to-air and air-to-surface combat.
Therefore, the acquisition of Rafale jet holds significance for India.

This is interesting, along with the UDAN tag. I wonder who will take the bait this time, with the strained Assam-WB relations. 9I? Till a possible stake sale/Government resurrection, a lot of decisions have been deferred.

This really sounds like wishful thinking. The IAF seems to have moved away from the PAKFA idea completely.

Yes, it is high time to save that historic aircraft flown by Biju Pattanaik that saved the life of Mr.Sukarno. We have discussed this in this forum years ago.

At least someone in AAI is thinking of this pressing problem!!
