Wow SU really is double downing on DEL No wonder AI had an issue on the route. Also putting a new airplane on the route is also surprising. I didn't think DEL was a premium route for them. I always thought of them as the cheap option from YYZ to DEL.

Two points: SU has always done well on the Delhi-Moscow route. They have always had a lion's share of the market, ever since AI had failed miserably with its A310s. AI tried hard with a much better aircraft than the A330s (the Dream)liner), but failed badly. SU has a real stronghold on the market, and makes money from the higher classes, and has the numbers to justify the Y loads, plus the cargo loads. AI doesn't have much chance to make it big on this route, at least in the current climate.
Second, SU is not always the cheapest option to North America, though occassionally, they give good deals.
Cheers, Sumantra.

What are the "demographics" on Aeroflot's DEL-SVO flights?

Small O&D of Indians working and living in Russia, and Russian tourists, with the bulk of pax transiting to Europe and North America?

Sanjay: I can only give circumstantial evidence, having done this route a couple of times (all on SU, including twice when the AI code-share used to be active on the then single flight). I have usually seen a very large number of Indian passengers. The number of transit passengers is often a bit variable, and depends on the SU deal at that point in time. I have seen some really good Y deals on SU at times: yes, as you mention, to North America, and to some extent Europe, as well. The air-side connecting pathway between terminals D, E and F have made a SVO transit very convenient, and seamless. I will possibly check out a transit between Terminals F and the new Terminal B later this year, for an international to domestic transit. From what I know, SU has a complete stronghold on the business traffic on the route: this includes not just the J (the SU `President Class') the small and medium business travel in Y, and the somewhat regular Government traffic. The route possibly has zero F demand (which anyway is the norm on many routes, globally), and SU does well with 2-class A330s. AI had tried to break into the market at a time when SU had one SVO flight, and there were two other MOW flights: one to DME and one to VKO by two Russian Federation operators (was one of them Transaero), and they failed badly, and pulled out very quickly. AI was getting poor yields and poor loads as well (including in Y), and the GOI connection (AI 155/4) was not working out well for Russian tourists as well (this was possibly linked to the Rouble rate fluctuations). SU added a second frequency: their economics work out well, and they have a stronghold on the market. I do not foresee any other entrant into the market: SU have essentially shut the competition out.
The Y passenger experience is quite nice: good food, decent legroom, decent baggage allowance, passable service.
Cheers, Sumantra.

...to add to my earlier post:
SU gives good intra-ex-Soviet Union connections, (not just intra-CIS). The cargo loads also make the double frequency worth it. After the Rouble went down to the Rupee, the AI O&D had little chance to work out. It is nice that AI realised this quickly, and stopped the DME connection. The cost of maintaining the station for a non-daily flight was a small factor, but in such a situation, almost everything counts.
Cheers, Sumantra.
