Mumbai airport to stop stamping boarding passes

Jan 15 2019

India’s second busiest airport, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), on Monday said it will soon do away with physical stamping of boarding passes by security personnel for domestic passengers.

Passengers travelling within the country from Terminal 2 can authenticate their boarding pass at the pre-embarkation security check points by scanning its barcode or QR code with their mobile phones at the e-gates reader, using Live Passenger Dataset, Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the company that operates the Mumbai airport, said in a statement.

This authentication will eliminate the responsibility of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel to stamp boarding passes.

It will save time, provide a “harmonious experience” to passengers, and improve the overall throughput of the security check procedure, MIAL added.

A MIAL spokesperson said the required permissions are expected to be in place from CISF in a week’s time. “We have the e-gates ready at Terminal 2, and will eliminate stamping of boarding passes by security personnel as soon as we get the go ahead.”

The MIAL spokesperson said that Terminal 1 will also be upgraded shortly.

The move by the Mumbai airport is in line with the government’s Digi Yatra initiative, which aims to make ticket booking, airport entry and boarding pass security check-in digital.

Digi Yatra will also enable facial recognition technology for passengers to enter airports and promote paperless and hassle-free air travel.

Under this scheme, passengers will be asked for one-time verification at the departure airport, while travelling for the first time using a valid identity proof.

After verification, facial recognition biometric will be captured and stored in the Digi Yatra ID.

This initiative is expected to be rolled out across all major Indian airports.

Hasn't this been implemented already? I didn't have any of my boarding passes stamped on my last trip to India last year.

Perhaps that was the handbag tag not being stamped, that went into effect from April 01, 2017 ?

I, of course, had to fly out of Bombay on the last day, March 31.

I had no idea it was the last day of hand luggage tag stamping until I read the newspaper on board. Perhaps the tag will make a good souvenir of the "end of another era" !

How is this time saving? After security check, the security person stamps the boarding pass, usually it does not take more than 2 seconds, perhaps they want to save on stamping equipment.

Soon, paperless boarding for domestic flights

Jan 23, 2019

Paperless boarding for domestic flights will soon be a reality with the Centre notifying rules for its ambitious Digi Yatra.

However, international travel cannot be made fully paperless as passports are required to be shown at multiple points, like check-in and immigration.

Domestic travellers will need to generate a unique Digi Yatra ID number using the aviation ministry's portal.

After a physical verification during first-time use at an airport, passengers will thereafter need to provide this number while booking tickets and then go paperless for domestic flights at smart airports which conduct biometric-based verification.

The voluntary biometrics (facial recognition) based access system will kick off with India’s two most tech-savvy airports at Hyderabad and Bangalore, followed by Varanasi, Kolkata, Pune and Vijaywada in the next few months. Other airports may follow suit but the rules are now in place to ensure that passengers who opt for DY get a similar experience at different smart airports.

To be sure, the existing system of showing paper tickets and ID cards will continue at all airports to be used by passengers who do not wish to participate in the voluntary DY.

Directorate General of Civil Aviation chief B S Bhullar has issued an order under which passengers can create their unique DY ID using any of these I-cards for the eboarding process digi yatra: Passport; voter photo identity card issued by Election Commission; Aadhaar or m-Aadhaar issued by UIDAI; PAN card issued by I-T department; driving license issued by RTO; service photo identity card issued by state/central government, public sector undertakings, local bodies or public limited companies; student photo identity cards issued by government institutions/government recognised educational institutions; nationalised bank passbook with attested photograph; pension card / pension documents having photograph of the passenger and disability photo ID card/handicapped medical certificate issued by respective state /UT governments/administrations. The DY ID created will be authenticated during the first travel by the passenger at a DY-enabled departing airport and activated.

“At the time of making flight ticket booking on the airline reservation system, online travel agents/global distribution, website, mobile app booking..., airline shall make a provision to collect DY ID of passenger for domestic travel,” says the order. Airlines have been asked to share passenger data including DY ID, with biometric boarding system of airport operators at least six hours before the flight on a secure link for the purpose of ticket validation and ID validation.

Boarding passes won’t be stamped till February-end at Mumbai airport’s terminal 2

Feb 2, 2019

Domestic passengers flying out of Mumbai airport’s terminal 2 (T2) will not have their boarding passes stamped till February-end. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has started a ‘trial for pilot project of digi yatra’ and elimination of boarding pass stamping. After seeing how the trial goes and whether changes are needed, the practice could stop for good at T2.

“The trial commenced at Mumbai airport for domestic flights from T2 of Air India, Jet Airways and Vistara. Friskers will not stamp boarding passes of passengers as they are being scanned at e-gates at pre-security hold areas,” a senior CISF official said.

Security agencies has stopped stamping handbag tags at many airports over the last few years. Trial runs were conducted and their results were examined to find loopholes.

GVK Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), which runs Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, had on January 14 announced that it had technology to eliminate boarding pass stamping for domestic airlines operating out of T2. “Passengers traveling within the country from T2 can now authenticate boarding pass at pre-embarkation security checkpoint by scanning the boarding pass bar code or QR code on mobile phones at the e-gates reader… This will eliminate (stamping)… boarding pass…,” MIAL had said.
