Nice. The colour scheme looks better on the A320's longer sibling.

IndiGo aircraft get Michelin tyres for its entire fleet: Claims better fuel efficiency

November 21, 2018

French tyre maker, Michelin and India's low-cost airline, IndiGo has entered a long-term partnership to supply Michelin tyres for its Airbus and ATR fleet and claims that it will offer a better proposition for its passengers by changing to these environment-friendly Michelin Air tyres. Globally, Michelin is also a reputed tyre maker for cars and SUVs.

IndiGo has been buying customer-friendly & fuel efficient A320 NEO family aircraft, for which Michelin also happens to be an OE tire supplier.

Frank Moreau, President of Michelin Aircraft Tyre, commented: “We have developed truly high-technology tires that are perfectly adapted to the needs of the airlines. This means that we not only combined a high level of safety in extreme conditions and guarantee a large number of landings, but also allow fuel efficiency and environment friendliness”.

Michelin AIR X radial tyre claims to reduce the overall operational costs through an increased number of aircraft and better fuel efficiency and is more resistant towards foreign object damage. The radial casing design on these tyres is designed to utilize fewer components and use less fuel leading to less CO2 emissions.

This new partnership between IndiGo & Michelin is poised to bring higher value to the Indian aviation market with enhanced safety and being more eco-friendly.

IndiGo first airline to fly 50 lakh domestic passengers in a month

Nov 23, 2018

In a first for Indian airlines, IndiGo has flown more than 50 lakh domestic passengers in a month.
This feat was achieved in October 2018 when the low-cost carrier had 196 aircrafts and is on its way to become the first desi carrier to cross 200-mark in fleet size.

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/indigo-to-charge-for-all-seats-from-flyers-doing-web-check-in-other-budget-airlines-to-follow-suit/articleshow/66795195.cms

IndiGo to charge for all web check-ins

Nov 26, 2018

IndiGo flyers doing web check-in to skip long queues at airports will need to pay for this service too. The domestic market leader on Sunday said it will charge “for all seats from passengers doing web check-in.” With IndiGo having 43% market share in domestic skies, other low cost carriers are likely to follow suit.

What this means is that people travelling solo or in groups okay with sitting separately and opting for the free middle row while doing web check-in will also need to pay up. According to the low cost carrier website, seat selection charges on IndiGo domestic flights are Rs 600 for any seat in row 1, 12 and 13; Rs 300 for any seat in rows 2 to 10; and Rs 200 for any seat in row 11 and the window and aisle seats from row 14 to 20.

The seats with no selection fees are middle ones in row 14 to 20 and all seats in row 21 to 30. People choosing these seats at web check-in till now were not required to pay any fees. Something which has now been discontinued for web check-in, making it a paid service.

The airline in message to passengers said: “As per our revised policy, all seats will be chargeable for web check-in. Alternatively, you may check-in at the airport for free. Seats will be assigned as per the availability.”

An IndiGo spokesperson said: “Based on consumer preferences, we have made some changes in pricing for advance selection of seats. While different prices for different category of seats were always there, we have further refined the price categories based on the consumer preferences observed. This is a usual practice followed by most airlines globally and in India. We are continuously evaluating consumer preferences and making pricing adjustments as per consumer demand.”

IndiGo to launch Pune-Prayagraj flight in January

December 4, 2018

IndiGo will start a direct flight between Pune and Prayagraj (earlier Allahabad) under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials said.

The direct service will start before mid-January when the religious gathering of Ardh Kumbh commences in Prayagraj. The Ardh Kumbh will start on January 15 and end on March 4.

Officials said that the direct flight will benefit thousands of devotees from Pune and surrounding areas, who wish to travel to the holy city during the Kumbh. “Under the Regional Connectivity Scheme, a new IndiGo flight to Prayagraj from the Lohegaon airport is likely to commence soon. While the date has not been confirmed yet, AAI, Pune, has been informed that IndiGo flight operations to Prayagraj will be commencing soon,” Ajay Kumar, Director, Pune airport, said.

IndiGo on Thursday became the first Indian carrier to have 200 aircraft in its fleet with a brand new Airbus A320 Neo (VT-IZI) flying into Delhi from Toulouse, France, to join the low cost carrier.
The airline, which started operations on 4 August 4, 2006 with a Delhi-Impal flight, has so far placed orders for 530 Airbus A320 family planes and 50 ATRs.
It is yet to receive about 220 A320 Neos, 150 A321 neos and over 40 ATRs from the orders placed earlier.

IndiGo in talks with Qatar, Turkish Airlines to expand global footprint

December 12, 2018

IndiGo is in talks with Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines for commercial partnerships, including interline and codeshares, as the carrier looks to expand its international footprint. An interline or codeshare is a commercial arrangement between airlines, which allow them to sell on each others’ network. Such a tie-up would be a first for IndiGo, which is the country’s largest airline.

The airline has 202 aircraft, a mix of Airbus A320s and ATR 72s and will be inducting its first Airbus A321neo later this month. The A321s have 222 seats and a longer range than the A320s.

IndiGo plans to use the A321s on new routes to Istanbul and start one-stop services to Europe via Central Asia. Commercial partnerships with airlines will help IndiGo increase seat occupancy and generate revenue from international routes. But such tie-ups will be a challenge, given its no-frills business model.

While overseas operations still account for less than 10 per cent of IndiGo’ total daily flights, it is nonetheless fast growing. The airline has launched new destinations – Male, Phuket, and Hong Kong - and introduced a service between Amritsar-Dubai and Vijayawada-Singapore. It has also expanded services to Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Kuwait. Currently, it serves 15 overseas destinations with 115 daily flights.

IndiGo to upgrade engine software in Airbus A320neos

DECEMBER 19, 2018

IndiGo said it will retrofit its entire Airbus A320neo fleet with a new software upgrade from engine-maker Pratt & Whitney after one of its planes was forced to make an emergency landing last week due to smoke in the cabin.

The airline will retrofit the planes within three weeks, IndiGo, owned by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, said in a statement on Wednesday.

The incident leading to the emergency landing, which took place on Dec. 11, is the latest snag for IndiGo, Airbus’ biggest customer for the A320neo, all of which so far have been fitted with Pratt & Whitney’s engines for the airline.

The issue occurred in the engine’s No.3 bearing seal, IndiGo said, with smoke from an oil leak in the engine entering the air system. A spokeswoman added that there was no fire onboard and there was no earlier report of any malfunction with the airplane.

“Pratt is continuously developing fixes to improve the reliability of the No. 3 bearing seal,” IndiGo said, adding that the engine-maker, owned by United Technologies, has introduced a software upgrade to mitigate the problem.

Pratt & Whitney declined to comment.

Earlier in the day, local media reported that Pratt & Whitney had informed the Indian aviation regulator that they were modifying some of the A320neo engines to address the issue by lowering the temperature of the combustion chamber by 40 degrees.

We have been informed that Pratt & Whitney engines fitted in the A320neo that have done less than 800 hours of operation are getting an upgrade where the combustion chamber’s temperature will be reduced, BS Bhullar, directorate general of civil aviation told local media.

IndiGo plans flights from India to Turkey

December 21

IndiGo plans to launch flights from India to Turkey but will not carry any passengers from Turkey to a third country.

“We cannot comment on the precise agreement as it is commercially sensitive. At the moment we have plans to put in services from India to Turkey but not beyond,” a spokesperson for the airline said.

IndiGo and Turkish Airlines announced a codeshare and mutual cooperation agreement on Friday. Incidentally, this is the first code share agreement that IndiGo has signed since it started operations over a decade ago.

“We are confident that both companies will benefit but more importantly respective customers will benefit. There will be 20 cities available to us beyond Istanbul. As you can imagine most will be in Europe,” the spokesperson said. The airline expects to sign more such agreements in the future.

Queried on whether going in for a code share or an interline agreement was not against the basics tenants of low cost airlines, the spokesperson said that in other parts of the world low cost airlines have gone in for such agreements.

"There was even an alliance formed in the Far East between low cost airlines and promoting code sharing which happened recently,” the spokesperson said.

I would have prefered Indigo offering nonstop flights from India to underserved destinations where Indians actually want to go to (as compared to just being feed). That said, I would rather have an indian airline actually benefitting from the ME4’s ambitions rather than only the ME4. I hope Indigo got a good deal from Turkish airlines. So much for Indigo opening routes like MAA-LHR or AMD-LGW.

IndiGo to induct its first long range jet A321neo this week

Dec 25 2018

IndiGo is likely to induct its first long range jet A321neo (new engine option) in its fleet Saturday, after a delay of almost one month, which will pave the way for the airline to launch its much-awaited medium-haul international operations, a source said Tuesday.

“IndiGo’s first A321neo plane, which was to join the fleet late last month, will now be finally inducted on December 29,” an airline source said.

The delivery of the new jet will help IndiGo introduce flights on the medium-haul routes.

If Indigo is getting a deal, you can bet TK is a getting a deal too. TK cannot code share with Indigo but can interline. However interlining has its limits since Indigo is in a different terminal at both BOM and DEL and everyone know what a pain it is to transit between terminals at BOM and DEL.

The last time I flew Indigo they weren't even offering seamless transits in their domestic Indian network. One had to check in again for the connecting flight upon reaching the transit destination. A bit rich coming from them then, all this talk of interlining with a foreign carrier. It all gets even more absurd when one considers that AI already interlines with TK through Star Alliance.

Indigo offer through check-in and through baggage connection as long as the entire booking is on a single PNR now.

IndiGo to start Delhi-Istanbul daily flights from April; Birmingham & Moscow on the cards

Jan 6, 2019

IndiGo will start daily flights to Istanbul by this March or April using the newly acquired Airbus A321 new engine option (Neo) aircraft. The low cost carrier expects to get “double digit” A321 Neos this year and is going to start one-stop flights to the UK where it is looking at Birmingham and London Stansted and Gatwick as the options.

Guangzhou and Kunming in China and Moscow are also on the LCCs radar as it plans aggressive international growth to areas which are in the range of the A321 Neos.

“Our Istanbul flight should start by March-end or April. Our model for these flights will be pretty much the same as our current one. The per cost of the A321 Neo is low and we will be able to offer very competitive fares,” said a senior IndiGo official.

The LCC will also expand its reach in the Gulf by adding new places to its network like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. In Istanbul, IndiGo will fly to the new airport that will open shortly.

India’s IndiGo To Launch Delhi To London Gatwick Flights In March 2019

January 6, 2019

IndiGo is set to commence service from Delhi to London Gatwick in March of this year.

After a few months of rumors, it appears that the Delhi to Gatwick flights will finally become a reality. IndiGo has not officially announced the new route, and there is no mention of London on its website, but the airline has apparently secured slots at Gatwick starting March 31, 2019.
IndiGo will operate its Airbus A321neo from Delhi to Gatwick seven days a week. The airline will fly the route with a fuel stop at Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Azerbaijan.

The flights will accommodate as many as 222 passengers and arrive at and depart from Gatwick in the evening. IndiGo will operate the Delhi to Gatwick flights under IndiGo flight number 1, while the Gatwick to Delhi flights will be operated under IndiGo flight number 2. We have also learned that IndiGo will operate its flights out of Terminal 1L, the South Terminal, at Gatwick. Turkish Airlines, which recently signed a codeshare and mutual operation agreement with IndiGo, also uses the South Terminal.

IndiGo is planning on turning its aircraft around in one hour, significantly faster than the average turnaround time of 90 minutes for international flights. This might be very difficult to accomplish for most airlines; however, IndiGo has been recognized for its efficient turnaround times which have been reduced to less than 30 minutes for its smaller aircraft. Accordingly, the airline should be able to realize the aggressive 60-minute turnaround.

So why not fly DEL-IST-LGW to start why introduce Baku? Can they pick up pax in Baku but not IST? While LGW will work just fine for tourists, it probably won't for the VFR crowd (my understanding is most DEL crowd VFR lives on the west end and close to LHR.

If Indigo is truly getting aggressive, I wonder how AI and 9W will respond. I still haven't figured out why 9W hasn't started BOM-NBO with a 737MAX (after all Kenyan flies 737 twice daily so not like competition is a great aircraft)

Baku is the technical halt for refueling. They won't pick up any pax there as they have no 5th freedom rights between Baku and London.

IST is probably slot restricted and more expensive as a transit halt. Even so, they will not pick up any pax in IST. Yet again, no fifth freedom.

I can see 6E's flight doing very well. The VFR and tourist crowd will lap it up.

Like EasyJet is doing, 6E should tie up with ThamesLink and sell tickets for the Gatwick Express at special rates on board. This train goes from Gatwick Airport to London Victoria (Central London) in 35 mins flat. It may become attractive even for some low end business pax.

Do they need a tech halt in both directions?

Yes, if you consider the A321N's range (4000 nm), the distance between DEL and LGW (3635 nm), and the need for diversionary and holding fuel, winds, payload etc.

DEL-LGW will be primarily an O & D flight with limited connections even at DEL due to change in terminals. Not sure if this will be successful as it involves 1 stop. The price has to be quite low for Indigo to attract the existing passengers.

Why didn't they pick a city where they can pick up pax (forget about 5th freedom how about just India O&D)? I thought most ME, CA, EU bilaterals actually let Indian carriers have 5th freedom. Seems really odd.

For IndiGo, no evenings in Paris, no nights in London

JAN 18, 2019

IndiGo has for now stalled its co-founder Rakesh Gangwal’s ambitious plans to fly low cost long haul flights to Europe, as costs mount and margins are squeezed, said two people in the know.

“There will be no flights to European destinations in the next six months or even a year. I wouldn’t call it a reversal but plans are always reviewed,” said one of the people cited above.

He added the regulatory approvals haven’t been all received for flights to London, the first destination in the west that IndiGo was planning to fly to in the ongoing winters. It had got slots at the city’s Gatwick airport. Those slots will lapse by March.

The halt in plans is also the result of a debate within the management on whether its planned no-frills model for the flights would garner enough demand in a market which is full of highly competitive premium products from carriers such as Emirates and Singapore Airlines, said one of the persons cited above.

IndiGo initially planned to acquire bigger planes -- the 300-seater Airbus A330 or the Boeing 787 Dreamliners -- to fulfill this objective but soon dropped them as its profits fast fell due to high costs and pressure on yields. The next plan was to look at international hubs via which to route these flights. IndiGo planned to use the Airbus A321 planes, a stretched version of its staple A320, that can fly about an hour or two more.

“They looked at destinations such as Baku (Azerbaijan), Tbilisi (Georgia), Bahrain and Kuwait as potential hub locations,” said a person in the know. “...basically destinations that offer fifth freedom rights that allow an airline to fly traffic from one country to another while stopping and picking up traffic from a third.”
